Thoughts on Hopson

I get a kick out of the talking about an offense. There is no offense. You have to attempt to do something positve with the ball as a team to have an offense. Passing the ball around the perimeter until 10 sec is on the clock and then jacking a 3 or throwing the ball against the backboard on a drive is not an offense. Jogging from one side court to another while the ball is held by the PG is not an offense. But in Pearl's world it is called the 'flex offense." Cracks me up! It's offensive to call it an offense.

Let's just say it the way it is, Scotty acts like a middle schooler with his baby attitude. He even plays like one on defense. Let's also give credit to Williams for many of his good drives in the half court since he walls off one or two defenders for Scotty to get to the basket.

Excellent post.

I'm still confused. It was one bad game. Granted, it was the SEC Tourney, but other than Tobias, the rest of the team sucked. I would understand the bad attitude.

Hopson has had that pouty, slumped shoulders, woe is me attitude since day 1.

Guys - if they keep Pearl or not they have got to change the "flex offense'. Y'all are very knowledgeable posters. Do you see the same problems trying to run an offense with the Cats, Gators, Commodores, etc? They still push it and run transition when its there. Then look at the other top programs; OSU, Duke, UNC, Kansas, Pitt, etc., etc. Same story. I am just concerned that Pearl just doesn't know how to do it any other way than he has done it for the last 6 years.

Lofton was great at that two man, high post screen and roll. We have no Lofton's anymore. So ditch that part of the offense until you do. On defense we rarely use a zone. Why? If our boys can't play 35+ minutes consistently like all of the other good teams - run a zone more to give the guys more time to recover.

Thoughts?

If Pearl stays, you're right, he has to change the offense. If we have an asst. coach leave, he needs to bring in a guy to teach the offense.

I can't believe I'm wasting my time responding to you again but this staff has worked and worked and worked with Scotty Hopson on his game. And guess what.......He's TEN TIMES the player he was when he stepped foot on campus.

Don't confuse his facial expressions with desire and effort, because I assure you he has plenty. As usual, you cherry pick 1 bad game (in which he scored 17 in the 2nd half) and completely forget how dominant he was the 2nd half of the year. It exposes your agenda so my suggestion is pick a new topic to harp on, this one is played.

Give it up man. These 20 somethings that never touched the floor in any capacity know it all. Don't you know that by now? If you don't, be ready beacause namecalling will be next. Like little kids.

No, Tatum plays hard all the time. He just happens to be playing incredibly poor right now. It's not an effort problem at all with him.

That's way off. Standing and watching as the ball goes up doesn't equal "playing hard all the time". Not even close.

I don't even know what that means. He's obviously not playing well offensively, but he is definitely giving effort.

Cam has stood around and watched too much as the ball goes up and is often a step late to recover on d because he has lapses, like hopson. Ask the coaches, hell ask Reggie Miller. He commented on cams lack of intensity and effort on at least 5 occasions during the ky game. I'd say his opinion is more informed than you or I.

He's defended well all year. I watched the UK game, and don't recall Reggie Miller calling out Tatum for not giving effort. I do remember him screwing up late in the game though by helping down on Jones leaving Miller open for the dagger. But, that, again, is a mental mistake. Not lack of effort.

If you think not boxing out, giving up a dunk or 2 on an inbounds play in many games, including ky, and lazily reaching in and leaving open jump shooters is not lack of effort then we will just disagree. Not being mentally focused also means lack of effort in my book. And Reggie called him out several times for not getting after the ball or rebound. I saw it at the game and heard him as I watched on dvr later.

That's really reaching. I'm sure Tatum probably has missed a boxout at some point this season, but it doesn't happen with regularity. And I'm not sure it was even Tatum's fault on the inbounds screwup. They switch everything on out of bounds plays so it very well might have been the other wing's fault.
