Thoughts on J. Stokes talking football..

I love how you have a handful of ex basketball players who went on to become great football players, and suddenly Stokes is going to be one of those guys.

He doesn't look fast at all so I don't know how he would do in the football program. I don't think is game translates to the NBA so that doesn't surprise me that he's not making the NBA a priority. Also shows that he's not considering coming back to the basketball program for his senior year. Not surprising.

I would put money down that he is just as fast as Jason Witten. You do not have to be a burner to be an effective tight end. I am in no way comparing his football ability to Witten's but I would probably pick Stokes if they were both lining up to run the 40.

If its anything like BBall, they would just double-team him on the go route and he'd freak out and drop the ball.

Julius Thomas, Broncos, another BB player turned TE--and an excellent one. More athleticism than Stokes, I think. Stokes is a big strong guy but his athleticism is only average, IMO.

Am i the only one that thinks his only future in American sports is football. The days of a Paul Silas type player are pretty much gone.He has turned it up a notch this year but still no outside shot and lets face it hes not a jumping jack

I have been saying this for a minute. With the trouble he had with height I just can't see him playing in the NBA. Or at least a significant role or playing time.

would see stokes as an Alge Crumpler type of TE. IMO obviously we don't know how well he'd run around with pads and stuff, but would be very interesting to see.

I have a couple questions.
Could Jarnell declare for the NBA draft and see where he ends up? If he somehow got a late 1st round pick he would obviously go to the NBA since the contract is guaranteed...but let's say he gets drafted in the 2nd round which isn't a guarantee contract or doesn't get drafted at all, could he come back to UT and play football?

Also he could transfer somewhere else and play football he wouldn't have to stay at UT. Greg Paulus a point guard at Duke played 4 years of basketball then transferred to Syracuse and play a year or so at QB.

I can't believe everybody missed the greatest TE in NFL history Tony Gonzalez! Dude has dunked over the goal post every TD he ever scored.

Whether he plays football at UT or not, if basketball doesn't work out he can go to an NFL developmental (taxi) squad for a couple years and be ready to go.

I think he is seeing the Payday that former basketball players like Jimmy Graham get and thinking he is better off catching a football!

I'd disagree, in the NFL if you're a low-drafted player you aren't even guarenteed a contract. If Stokes went over to Europe or got drafted in the NBA, he'd have a better chance to make a definite salary. Plus he would have a longer career in the NBA than he would in the NFL.

Nothing is guranteed in the second round.. There are plenty of undersized non stretch 4's in the NBA, so a roster isn't 100%. I like the idea of at least trying it.. Especially if you fail it hurts nothing, and he still can play his last year of hoops.

I don't believe Stokes is a bona fide NBA prospect and I think he knows it. That's the reason he is talking football. If he can play FB he might have a better career in the NFL than in the NBA. He should have to talent to play, the question is if he can get enough playing experience during his eligibility period. Would he have FB eligibility after the 2014-15 BB season or would he only have it for the 2014 FB season?
