He would clearly be an offensive tackle. he could very easily weigh 315 ibs within 6 months. With his natural athleticism he could at least make an NFL Roster.

It's an interesting thought, but his body composition is all wrong for tackle, and it'd be a waste of his other talents.

He would, however, be a baller at TE. He's a smart kid and a hard worker, and judging by some of the things he's improved on this season, I feel like he'd be able to get down enough routes for someone to take a chance on him. He did play in high school.

BTW, this is something Butch Jones has clearly thought about before. Consider the below exchange, which is 100% real:

Q: "Have any of the Tennessee football coaches ever talked, even jokingly, about having [you] on the team?"

A: "Yeah. Both. Dooley did back then. And Butch Jones. I’ve run into him twice in the training room. He always makes jokes about it. But that’s just something that’s in the back of my mind right now."

Vols forward Jarnell Stokes talks football...Would he play?

Stokes is a beast on the court, but he doesn't strike me as the most agile and sure-handed type of athlete. I could see him a DE much sooner than catching a football.

I would much rather see Maymon try the football thing. No worries of the NFL with him, so he would be motivated for sure. He looks tough enough to handle it as well.

Maybe he's just talking to see if buTch will ask him to give it a shot and see if it can work out.

#BrickbyBrick...VFL...GBO!!!

Know he would have good hands and leaping ability and size, not confident in the route running. Seen in the newspaper he ran like a 4.48 40. That's pretty impressive if true.

4.48 in the 40............I got some ocean front property in Knoxville I'll sell ya.

Tell that to Bruce Ellington.

Bruce Ellington was actually recruited by USCe to play football also, He chose to play basketball first. It wasn't much of a transition for him, in fact, he was cleary the "Mr. Football" of SC over Marcus Lattimore if you were just basing it off of Sr year performance.

Coach Jones is recruiting well at every position. I doubt Stokes could make us better just by being on the team for one year. Look at stud JUCO's who struggle to make an impact in their first year and they're "football" players.

I love how you have a handful of ex basketball players who went on to become great football players, and suddenly Stokes is going to be one of those guys.

I love how their have been some people go from basketball to football that didn't make it.. and suddenly Stokes is going to be one of those guys. (works both ways)

What I want to know is why are so many people on these boards trying to argue that he is automatically going to fail? At least give the guy a chance before you write him off. You never know, he could come out and be a beast.

He also could end up making a fool of himself. NO ONE KNOWS for sure either way. At least see what the kid has before writing him off. Just sayin :loco:

Lol, talk about contradicting.

Who says he'd be a dominant TE? I didn't know you were paid to judge how well a player would transition from basketball to football.
You were the one who insisted he would NOT be a TE. The position he plays in BB and his size + athleticism is conducive to him playing the TE position. He is already used to going up and snatching the ball in traffic and boxing out a defender...things you want from a big TE.

I will just be glad when the day comes where we finally have enough talent in our depth to not have to cling to hope that a basketball player will swoop in to save our football team.

How's that any different from you insisting he would be?

We also just brought in two highly touted EE's that will play TE.

He's already got the size for DE, has a big wingspan, and is athletic.

We need DL help a lot more than we need another TE.

I would put money down that he is just as fast as Jason Witten. You do not have to be a burner to be an effective tight end. I am in no way comparing his football ability to Witten's but I would probably pick Stokes if they were both lining up to run the 40.

I'll take that bet.

And the 2002 Citrus Bowl Michigan defense agrees with me too.

Because I'm siding with common sense and lots of precedence. You, one the other hand, just come out and state matter of factly, without a single thing to base it on.

You can go to the NFL.com site and read the articles where Jimmy Graham, and now the early 1st Rd prospect, Mike Evans state clearly that their basketball experience gives them skills that transfer directly to the TE or WR position.
