Thoughts on the 10/22 scrimmage

Lewis said Martin has told him he wants 8 guys to have defined roles getting minutes every game. You'll probably see 9 or 10 guys get minutes, but not on an every game basis.

So my guess as to those 8:

Barton/Thompson
McRae/Hubbs
Richardson/Hubbs
Maymon/Davis
Stokes/Maymon

That's the same thing I thought of. Pops will definitely see immediate time just cause of his size.

Do you see Moore getting any significant minutes?

That's the biggest position battle IMO. Davis/Moore fighting for the backup 4 spot is the best battle IMO, and will likely continue through our exhibitions.

I've come to like Moore. Don't know much about Davis, but it won't take me long to get a grip on his game. From what I hear, he's pretty talented.

Will remind you a lot of JP Prince. The fact AJD has beaten out Moore, or at worst played even says a lot about his ability IMO.

I LOVED JP while he was with us, contrary to the way a lot of folks on here felt about him. He was easily the craftiest player on the team, IMO. Couldn't shoot, but slashing and getting above the rim he could do. Can't remember if it was the game that we stole #1 ranking from Memphis or maybe a KS game, but he made a steal w/ the clock winding down for the other team that iced it. He was 'in there' w/ me after that.

JP is the most underrated vol to play for us in the last decade. Don't let the playa haters tell you different. My favorite Pearl era vol. Thanks for throwing it down Turner's throat JP.

If this foul calling hold true it would be a good idea to make sure our guys can shoot FT. That very well could be a huge advantage this year, not that it isn't always important, but especially this year.
Are hand checks out?

"Fouls will be expected to be called when a defensive player keeps a hand or forearm on an opponent; puts two hands on an opponent; continually jabs by extending his arms and placing a hand or forearm on the opponent or uses an arm bar to impede progress," Kerkhoff wrote.

Stokes and Maymon said they were being called every time down the floor.

I guess we can adjust, but it may be hard for some of the more defensive teams starting out.

I really thought Reese would be more of a contributor. I remember hearing that he had bulked up to play the 4 and could still stroke the 3. At 6'8" I figured he'd create some mismatches. Any word on him?

His release is just too slow for the big time, as is his lateral quickness. I think he transfers after this year to play at a smaller school, with the guys coming in he's gonna get buried on the bench. Not knocking the guy just being honest. Hopefully wherever he ends up, if he transfers, he gets some burn.

Y'all are crazy! Moore will get his minutes you can bet on that. I mean he started last year some. I know it was because we went to a 4 guard lineup. But how do you go from starting your freshman year to not logging any minutes your sophomore year?

Especially if we land Looney. He won't beat out Looney/Davis/Cofer for minutes.

Armani Moore is a very versatile player. He could log any amount of minutes at the 2,3, or 4. He will log lots of playing time and be a star when he leaves here. JMO. Go Vols!

Reese is still just a sophomore... He's got 3 years (starting this year) to develop more... He's got the tools to be a solid 4 year player.

He could possibly see minutes at the 4 spot this season because of the new rule changes and his size. (Jeronne will spend a lot of time in foul trouble.)
Though I think AJ will be a better all around player in the long run, I expect he'll be a slow starter like his dad.

And not to argue but unless he makes a big jump he isn't beating out Davis, Cofer, Turman, Moore and possibly Looney for a spot.

Let's be honest, who was he starting over? Derek Reese, Quinton Chievous, Dmontre Edwards??

AJ Davis has come in and performed better than him from all accounts, that's not a knock on Moore but credit to AJD. I would also think the fact that AJD is a legit 6'9" makes him at the 4 a bit more appealing to the staff.
