Thoughts on the 10/22 scrimmage

Well he basically just reiterated that he's gonna play the guys the same way again this year, not go deeper. Actually he has basically said he wants to play a smaller rotation this year than last, so not sure that goes with what you're saying.

As for not being successful with that philosophy, his most successful season was actually the year he also went with the smallest rotation, so doubt he sees it the way you do. He went 7 deep his final year at Missouri state, and that was by far his most successful season as a coach.

Martin has never had the luxury of coaching otherwise.

If we rotate 7 something went wrong with someone. A solid 8 is what I hope to see.

l_Hoops Report: October 2

"For us, having a strong bench is the biggest thing right now," Martin said. "We can't have Jordan McRae, Jarnell Stokes and Jeronne Maymon playing 35 minutes-plus a game. That's too many minutes for those guys. It's such a long season, so we have to strengthen our bench. We have the personnel to do it, but it's a matter of putting guys in a position to be successful."

Vol_Hoops Report: October 2

"The biggest key where we have to get stronger is seven through 10 on the bench. I think we might have seven solid guys, and we need another three guys to be strong. Now I'm not saying we'll play 10, but we've got to get better in that area."

He could've played more if he wanted to that year, he didn't have only 7 scholarship players, that was his choice. He has said [BMULTIPLE[/B] times that he prefers to play 7 or 8 deep, THAT'S IT.

Exactly, read the bolded. As I've said 100 times, Martin loves the fact he has more depth so that practices are better, he hasn't had that luxury in the past. Just because he wants to practice 10 doesn't mean he wants to play 10, as he clearly said.

Look....I'm not stupid. Could we have played more guys last year? Sure. Did we have the depth the play more? No.

Whats the likelihood that Martin had 8-9 quality guys at Missouri State?

This is from Lewis, which means it's from Martin's mouth himself...

He would like to play eight, maybe nine at the most as part of his rotation. I don't think you'll see guys past the 8th spot in the rotation getting regular minutes. He will play more than eight at times obviously, but based on our conversations I think that's the number he'd like to have for defined minutes every game.

So in other words:

PG: Barton 25/ Thompson 15
SG: McRae 30/ Hubbs 10
SF: Richardson 30/ Hubbs 10
F: Maymon 15
F: Stokes 30/ Maymon 10

McRae, Richardson, Hubbs, Stokes and Maymon's minutes are pretty much guaranteed. The PG situation won't effect Moore as he can't play point as we learned. That leaves backup minutes at the 4, with about 20-25 available minutes, simple math says there's not 20 minutes available for Moore. (especially if Davis has beat out Moore as suggested)

8-9 MVC quality players?

Very likely. Martin has said multiple times that he wants to play 8 guys, not out of necessity, but because that's his preference.

As you like to say, just sit back and watch. As I said, if Moore averages more than 15mpg (assuming we stayed healthy) beers are on me prior to a SECT game.

I expect 8 will see double digits, but that 7 & 8 guys will be just over double digits IMO.

Like I've said, I don't see Moore's minutes going up, jmo.

I'm hoping 8, the starters + Thompson, Hubbs and Davis/Moore. Hubbs getting the most off the bench of course.

Moore's minutes depend on about 4 different things. Barton doing what we think, Thompson and Davis both being ready, Maymon. If those 4 happen, I count Davis and Thompson separately, then Moore probably gets 7-9. IMO I like Moore but I'm hoping he gets the 7-9.

We might be going to 9 cause you have to figure we'll be in foul trouble in a majority of these games. I see Pops playing 12 minutes game just cause of his size.

So you think Maymon plays 30 or Stokes plays 35? I see 25 and 30 personally.

That's why I said 20 AT THE MOST. I originally had it at 15, Maymon saying 25 Stokes 30. If Maymon proves to be 100% his minutes could go up to 30, and Jarnell played a couple games over 30 minutes as well last year.

Relax chief I just asked a question. I think Pops at least gets 5 or so. Playing Maymon 30 or Stokes 35 would be a bad idea. IMO

How many does Barton get? Does he replace Golden's 35+ mpg?

It depends on Thompson being ready, if he is I'd say Barton gets 25. Might see an even split between the 2 as the season progresses. Again minutes really depend on the young guys being ready or not and how they develop as the year progresses.

Edit: to answer your question, no I don't think Barton gets that many minutes. I only see Jordy and Stokes breaking the 30 minute mark, Maymon may as the year goes along.

You'll see about 10 to 11 players getting minutes until the conference run if Martin doesn't get what he wants from his chosen few.
Usually settles into his 8 or 9 after that.

I think the 30 minute thing is over blown. Look at what UK plays their guys, how has that worked for Cal? Jarnell last year played more than 30 minutes a game in over half our SEC games, and he's supposedly in better shape this year right? He averaged about 33 minutes per game in SEC play last year, and as I said, is better conditioned this year.

Pops will be like Yemi IMO this year, will see minutes some games, and in others won't appear at all.

Exactly. Although with our tough early start it'll be interesting to see if he comes out of the guys trying to establish a rotation a bit earlier than usual.

Possible, but I'm expecting a lot of fouls early on until the upper classmen adjust to new rules.
Officiating will be interesting this season.
How many of the old heads are going to call a simple hand check a foul?
Let's get it on!!!

I didn't say playing Stokes 30 a game would be a bad idea, I said Maymon but mainly I mean early on. As I said in my other post I could see Maymon getting 30 depending on health, as the season progresses. Well it didn't work out too good for Cal last year. Lol How many minutes did Moore average in league play out of curiosity?

Like Yemi? Excellent
