Tidbits on The Coaching Search and Pearl Leaving

He could just be horrible in interviews, or there could be a lot of idiot ADs. However, a lot of the jobs that have come calling weren't exactly big time gigs. UT is getting there, so I gotta think they can pry him away.

If we offer him the job and he stays at Wichita, he isn't very smart.

His career has a strange path. He's been a winner at every stop though.

I wouldn't and neither would Tech, apparently. They thought so highly of the report you were so excited about that they took the extraordinary step of issuing a press release saying it was bullshat. Great find on your part. Awesome work.

Foxsports is now confirming it and saying it could be official tomorrow.

Georgia Tech's administration doing a good job of proving my first point about them. In their defense, I believe the FoxSports report indicates they interviewed Gregory this evening. I guess that means the late afternoon release wasn't totally false. I'd say that indicates Eddie Fogler's contact with other folks on their list didn't draw much positive response. Gregory will actually do a very good job for them.

So, to be clear, you were wrong about the Marshall thing?

Yes, that really brings to light what kind of person Pearl is. He wants $2 million while his assistants will be starving.

Meh, I would have done it too. He was already going to be fired, he had nothing to lose. Try to squeeze every dollar out while you can.

Not at all. Why would they go ahead and go to New York if they knew they were wasting their time? It woud appear Fogler got the same answer from the representatives for Grant, Marshall, and Smart. Flying Gregory in from Las Vegas late on Friday night for an interview, a couple of hours after issuing a stern denial of anything to do with having offered him the job, indicates a Jerry Greenesque process. Let's see if Marshall's name comes up at Missouri or Darrin Horn gets fired. If either or both of those things happen, it won't be hard to connect the dots.

Not sure how smart that was when the university wasn't legally obligated to give him a dime.

If Horn is fired, and they don't hire Marshall in two minutes, USC is worse off than I thought.

Where are you seeing the report about the late interview?

So reports leak that he was offered the job, then later are confirmed. All while Tech is making a push for Marshall.

It's ok to be wrong. No one is perfect.

If the rumored meeting between Hyman and Fogler took place this week, I can't imagine Horn is long for his job.

What is Fogler's relationship with USC at this point? I follow the Gamecocks from afar, but haven't seen Eddie in a while.

You seem to be leaving out the part about Tech issuing a release in which they specifically refuted the reports from this morning. You think they offered Gregory the job without ever talking to him? He was in Las Vegas last night recruiting for Dayton.

No reason to make a push if you've already got your answer. The same reason they chose not to wait for VCU to lose or for Alabama to finish up in the NIT.

Could the release not have been to save face in case of a rejection?

You are the one that said they were making a push.

Fogler has kind of a one man coaching search business going. He's advising Georgia Tech, among others, this offseason. Been doing it pretty much since he left the sidelines.

I said they were planning to go to New York to try and jump line on Tennessee. Given who told me that, I have no doubt that was their plan. No reason to do that if you find out a guy is waiting on other jobs.

Would he take USCe(if and when it opens) over UT in your opinion?

1) Jamie Dixon did not reject initial Tennessee overtures; however, no interview has happened and still a longshot.

2.) Chris Mooney picking up serious steam. It appears he's going to be a very serious candidate.

3.) Lawrence Frank appears to be a serious candidate. Expect for UT to have contact with him by the weekend.

4.) Bruce Pearl engaged in a cussing match with Tennessee brass because he felt he deserved double the buyout that Tennessee offered, which was nearly $1 million.

5.) We haven't contacted Anthony Grant, and there appears to be nothing to the earlier reports.

Have a good weekend guys.

Wow. That changes my view entirely. I was feeling sorry for him getting fired at first.
