Tim Banks defense...

OP, wait till about 6:30 P.M. next Saturday night and see how this holds up.
I mean, Alabama is Tuscaloosa is always going to be challenging. Obviously I want our guys to put their best effort forth, and they should expect to go out and compete and win, but if a Saban coached team with the amount of talent that they have somehow ends up giving us a bad day (as in, not just beating us, but making the defense look bad, as you suggest), it will hurt for sure, but I wouldn't write the season off.

Fair enough lol, it'll be a tough game. I'm not going to pretend I've never complained about banks in the past. Last years defense really let us down. I just think it's ridiculous to call for his firing over one drive with their body of performance this year. The defense has really stepped up. They have allowed more than 20 points only once so far this year (florida) and 7 of those came off an extremely bad interception and short field.

I really think he's done a good job, personally. There could be some debate about Martinez, but I'm not sure it's as clear cut as people think. He's coached and recruited a bunch of guys and replacing him will have some effect on a team (Edit to clarify: by team I mean specifically coaching staff here) that has been pretty cohesive, which has some advantages. I've never played the position and I don't doubt the criticisms people have made about technique and such, but just saying even if that needs to be taught better, simply replacing him will have some side effects that have to be considered.

I believe it's very obvious the defense will carry us the way this year which I think by the week they are very capable. We just dont need the offense to lose it with turnovers, presnap penalties and quick 3 and outs. Offensive coaching needs to improve as well, but I love how the D is settling in.

Apparently you haven't seen the scoreboard. Jesus.

I have, just about every scoreboard for most of the past 50 years. More to the point, I have seen our secondary for the past three years often get used, owned, burned and embarrassed by average QBs nobody’s ever heard of who we make look like All-Americans. Satan.

Tamu 2023 season Game-points scored to-date:

52, 33, 47, 27, 34, 20 and (wait for it) ......... 13.
Those last two games are against Bama.. and us. Their season worst offensive performance against us in that context could be worse for us. We aren't exactly in bush league company, even if Bama is a bit down.

...carried us today along with special teams. Can some of you stop calling for him to be fired after an opponent has one good drive?

Agreed. D showed up and showed out today. But one thing our guys do drives me crazy.

When we gang tackle — when we swarm to the ball — our guys’ first instinct seems to be to try and strip the ball carrier of the ball rather than take him to the ground. They often seem to give the carrier a few extra yards while they try to “start the lawnmower” (strip the ball out of the carrier’s hands) rather than wrap up and tackle the guy first and foremost.

I don’t believe I ever saw Eric Berry, Al Wilson, et al take that approach to tackling. Drives me nuts.

M. Johnson, QB16/346.622302

There QB completed under 50% of his passes. He averaged 6.6 yards per attempt. He had ZERO TD passes. and 2 interceptions. And you give the DB a D-.

Why do have Coach in your name?
He was horrible.

I get the impression most commenting here didn't even watch the game. One interception was an overthrow that should have been caught. Let's not talk about interception that should have been made that wasn't.

And with YOUR name i just lol.

My point is our DB'S ARE NOT taught to turn their heads. How often do you see it? I literally saw it once this year and the pass was broken up. They are playing soft almost every down. It's pitch and catch. They also never use sideline leverage. These are all fundamentals that are somehow either lost or told not to do. Tackling was better this game so that a plus.

Our line played great!

All I know is Martinez has been a liability since hes arrived at UT. He gotta go.

You are either delusional, drunk, both, or Willie.

Either way. We will never truly compete with the way our DB's are taught. Like it or not chief.
Look at almost every DB at every school. Travis Hunter, #1 recruit, best DB in the nation, didn't turn his head and got a ball caught off his helmet for a TD. It's easy to say it, obviously much harder to do it. Pros are the same way. It's rare to see DB's consistently turn their head. It's the special ones that can. Most, an overwhelming majority, don't.
Anytime your D gives up less than 300 yards... that's a damn good day!

Defense definitely won the game today and Banks deserves most of the credit. Great to see that improvement for sure. HOWEVER, that does not mean we will just immediately forget/dismiss 2nd quarter of Florida game or SCjr game last year as not significant. Those are not couple of drives why people have been calling for him to be fired - Banks' defense literally cost us playoff spot last year and UF loss this year is also mostly on him. Let's see how the D holds up next couple of weeks on the road in big SEC games where we have had most of the issues. If they perform as well as they have played at home last couple of games that should shut everyone up calling for Banks and/or Martinez to be fired. I personally need to see that to be convinced that we have really turned the corner.

Interesting how all the bad losses are on Banks, but if offense plays bad, it's on the players, not coach Heupel or the other offensive coaches. Sounds a bit like person bias to me. Imho!

I agree. I'll put a large majority of that game being closer than it should in coaches lap. He kicks a couple FG when he should've, and we're up by 10 and coasting at the end -not necessarily needing Hadden's pick at the end. Points were a premium -needed to kick

No you have NOT.

Idk what you coach, but it’s clearly not DBs. The last thing you want a guy doing when he’s behind a WR is turning his head. You wouldn’t run a forty with your head turned behind you would you? Of course, not. It would obviously slow you down. For that reason you don’t teach a DB to turn either until he’s in phase

Offense playing bad is definitely on Heupel and offensive staff because they seem to be sticking with Milton no matter how poorly he is playing. No doubt about that being on Heupel and I find it ridiculous that in every press conference when asked about Milton he says it's all 11 guys and staff that are responsible. There is some truth to that but yesterday it was mostly Milton who dragged the offense down again and at some point Heupel is throwing the rest of the team and coaching stuff under the buss to keep protecting one guy. Perhaps he is doing that because in spite of all the obvious issues Milton can run/participate in running game much more efficiently than Nico at this point and running game is working perfectly right now. By the way there are plenty of threads where people are complaining about QB situation so not sure why you think they are not being called out.

Every week its either:
- Tim Banks needs to be fired

or

- Tim Banks saved us.
Yep. And THAT is the issue. Banks needs some consistency moving forward. This up and down stuff aint gonna cut it in the long run. Play every game like we did today... we're golden!!

Defense is talented. Still think Banks blows it serval times a game though. Maybe the first half of the UF game is just unforgivable to me lol
You know that we were starting a RS Freshman at MLB at the swamp. His first start, and you're wondering why the defense looked bad in the 1st half?
