Tim Banks is either lying or delusional.

Here’s one of the stats that actually matters (not points per game or total yards):

Our defense was 30th in 3rd down %. Given our secondary limitations and lack of elite pass rushers, that’s not bad.

Here’s another stat that actually matters. We were 22nd in points per play.

The most important stat is points per possession, but I can’t find that anywhere. If anyone can, I’d love to see where we ranked

Considering what TB had to work with, we weren't grossly bad. The boys played inconsistently, but often came through despite everything else. For me, the thing was, even when being curb stomped, they kept Tex Cobb-ing to the last whistle. This is rather distinct from what we saw in the Dooley, Jones, Pruitt years. Given the misery, we Vols fans have endured for so very long, it amazes (and yes pizzes) me when fans lie in wait and snakebite players and coaches at the slightest opportunity. Hopefully, with the desertions of players, inferior recruiting, and general program implosions CJH & Co. dealt with, and still removed two major thorns (Florida and Bama) from our tortured hides, as well as bringing us to 10-2 winning season. And did this in merely two years of their tenure. Yet some ungrateful fans want to browbeat a coach. Perhaps TB should have said, "We got a sheety defense. Clemson will walk all over us to the tune of 86-10, because our defense guys neither know how to play, nor want to. So might as well enter the game dressed in a négligée and be the pushies we are. Then, the whiners will probably be satisfied. Well, one thing is for sure, we have quite a number of Debbies and i don't mean the cake selling kid.

I think in the modern era, the only defensive metrics that truly matter are take aways, 3rd/4th down stops, and forced field goals in the red zone. I couldn't care less about how many shut outs we pitched, yards we gave up, sacks we had, or T'sFL.

Add in points per possession and change turnovers to turnovers per possession, and I’d agree with this.

The defensive line is solid. They defend the run well, but that's about all they do.

When they get pressure on the QB, the secondary looks a lot better than they are. LSU game was a good example of this, but they have been extremely inconsistent at getting pressure. If we hope to come away with a win against Clemson, this will be the key to the game IMO. We will also have to run the ball well too.

I agree when we get pressure on the QB (UK, Pitt, LSU, Mizzou, Vandy) although Pitt QB completed some while getting obliterated. Difference the D played some super talented fast, smart and elusive QBs. B Young, Stetson & Rattler where hard to contain & sack. They are just really good QBs. It would have taken the elite of elite edge rushers to sack or contain those 3 consistently when their in their zone. B Young looked like Houdini in the Bama game. I saw where Klubnik was listed as a Pro style QB on recruiting threads but was listening to an interview about him and they said the thing that's better about him vs U is he is so mobile and fast. So that gives me concern coming into this game. We are not that great on D but when you have a mobile fast QB it could be a long day. Him being a freshman and in his first official start I would come after him early and often with blitz, stunts etc. This guy is a high 5 start and if he gets in a zone like Rattler did vs us it could be a long day.

They did) shuffled me in a middle stall and while I was thinkin bout how purty I was gonna look on stage… my boss pissed under the partition on me freshly shined shoes. I was like..

I’m confused

Total defense is yards per game…that is a volume stat. We are never going to be high in that category because we score quick on offense and opponents have to pass the ball to catch up. Not a stat to consider.
Also because we get out to big leads teams have to pass more to catch up. The Defense is better than what alot of people on here would have you believe.
5 teams with 13 points or less and one was the SEC West Champs at there house and a perfect Defensive game against Kentucky and Vandy the Pitt game they destroyed they QB'S and the D won us that game and the D came threw and stopped Florida when they was trying to make a comeback. This is the second year also. I would in no way pull the trigger on Banks not in year 2 with what he has been asked to do and he has help coming in now it will get better.

They played to the strategy the coaches put in. Take away the run & prevent big plays, make the QB make plays to beat you. Banks is simply supporting his guys. You better do that today if you want a career in coaching. The days of kicking your guys all the time are over.

Why is it that this staff seems immune from criticism to some of you? Why is Banks immune to being called what he is? A below averysegwnsive coordinates Jim

Usually, you get a pass when you are 1 blown defensive game away from being a playoff team in year two of a dumpster fire adoption. Nobody ... and I mean NOBODY foresaw this 2 years ago. Most were still whining because Nebraska got the real UCF coaching star and we got the leftovers. So, the results of the season are so astronomically beyond what we could ask or think, that most non-certifiably-insane posters here realize what has happened with this staff, from top to bottom, including your chosen scapegoat. JMO

For him to say that he coached a “really good defense is just ludicrous. It is beyond “coachspeak”.
Why not say that we really struggled and had some key injuries and youth or something. But don’t pee on my shoes and tell me it’s raining.

Tim Banks calls South Carolina game ‘anomaly’ for Tennessee’s ‘really good defense’

You have to find some positives eventhough they gave up career passing games multiple times. He wasn't going to say they stunk eventhough he may know it deep down.

Praise in public..brutally chastise in private..
I like this comment, it does nothing positive for the team for a coach to publicly bash performance in an interview. I'm sure behind the scenes the coaching staff is riding the defensive unit HARD as they should be. You've gotta tread lightly in how you approach criticism in todays game unfortunately. You upset a player or call a group of guys out in a negative way in a press conference and they hit the portal.

lol we won 10 games.

Defense wasn’t great, but it wasn’t as horrible as it was during the SC game most of the year.
Yep…that’s were I’ve landed as well. Wasn’t our greatest defense in history…and hoping to improve…but we won 10 so far…so I’ll take it. Don’t think TB was lying or delusional. I think it’s the only way he could answer the question.
