Tim Banks is either lying or delusional.

Doesn't matter about the yards what matters is getting off the field 2 to 3 more times a game. Our offense has been known to score with such ease that if our defense was just 2 to 3 drives better the game wouldn't even be close that is just how good we have been and it has been overshadowed by the woes of our defense.

Defense won the Pitt game, especially in the second half. We scored 3 points in the second half. Defense dominated UK.

People will use whatever metric to try to support their opinion, but yards per game is not a good metric to use with our offense.

I agree but 1st downs and 3rd/4th down conversions are. Points per play is another good one. Average plays per drive or 1st downs per drive is another.

The D was spotty at best. Many here lay most of the blame at the feet of the players or coordinators. I don't. Banks schemes and playcalling were baffling at times. Better talent may do nothing but put a bandaid over a festering wound.

Funny story…when I earned my first NCOoty award at Elgin I was proud. Shined my shoes fer 2 hours. Dress Blues and Rack perfect. My supervisor and his somehow got The jump On Tennessee ( ‘‘twas the last Time
They did) shuffled me in a middle stall and while I was thinkin bout how purty I was gonna look on stage… my boss pissed under the partition on me freshly shined shoes. I was like..

Third down conversion defense was ranked 28th. Fourth down conversion defense was ranked 49th (was high up in the number of 4th down attempts by the opponent).

Outside of 3 games, the defense was fine. One game was obviously awful. The coaching can be better, but the talent in the backend HAS to get better. The difference in recruiting rankings between the DL and the secondary is night and day.

For him to say that he coached a “really good defense is just ludicrous. It is beyond “coachspeak”.
Why not say that we really struggled and had some key injuries and youth or something. But don’t pee on my shoes and tell me it’s raining.

Tim Banks calls South Carolina game ‘anomaly’ for Tennessee’s ‘really good defense’

Statistically his defense is ranked 86th (out of 131 FBS teams). Passing yards allowed ranked 127th (wow). So there's those two kind of important stats.

They were good enough to go 10-2. Defense was good enough except for South Carolina. GA game was lost on both sides Offense and Defense. Plus he was doing this with mainly 3 stars.

Personally, I don't think they were "fine" against UTM, Bama, UGA, Mizzou, UF, or USC. The O was able to outrun Mizzou, Bama, and UF... but I don't think the D was impressive in any of those games.

Unbelievable timing; just look on the front page of Volnation, and you will see Jimmy's blog which says that Tennessee's D was good this year with the exception of three games.

UTM? We played walk-ons in the second quarter. That was by design. With our offense, the defense against Mizzou and maybe UGA were good enough. It wouldn't be fine under a Pruitt-led offense. If our offense can convert a first down against UF, we don't worry about that one either.

Just disagree. UTM was completing passes almost at will vs the starters. Mizzou's previously unsuccessful QB had himself a "day" vs UT's D. AR had by far his best game of the year throwing the ball vs UT's D. It was embarrassing. UGA could have scored 50 on UT's D. They went conservative to avoid giving the ball back to UT and risk Hooker getting it going.

By pretty much any measure you want to look at, UT's pass D was just bad... really bad.

Or if the defense doesn’t allow 5 of 6 4th down conversions and 453 yards passing to a guy who can’t pass ….maybe the offense wouldn’t be pressured to convert that late 1st down.

The UTM game was 52-7 at halftime, and William Wright (walk-on) intercepted a pass with 3:39 left in the first quarter. UTM then went 3 and out, fumble, 3 and out, 3 and out, 6 plays turnover on downs, and 3 and out on the next 6 possessions! You are trying too hard on that one- not sure what some of you watch.

I have never said it was good, but people posting volume stats just aren't supporting their argument. That's not the stats to use. I have posted 3rd and 4th down conversion rankings. I have posted red zone rankings.

The USC game was awful, but the defense actually improved from 2021. It needs to improve more.

Whatever metric you want to use, you have to look at stops and lengths of drives. First downs per game or play or drive help with that. Conversions help. Drive length or number of plays helps.

UT's D can't be measured by totals because the O is going to score points fast and put them on the field more or BETTER... "more often". If each side possesses the ball an average of 12 times per game and UT pushes that up to 15 or 16 then the D may allow more yds and points. But that will also mean that UT imposed its will on the opponent.

This pisses me off. You either don't know what you are watching or you're not all there.

I'm confused. That's what I have been referring to, so why are you disagreeing with me?

Nobody seems to mention that Banks has been here two years now and there has been very little, if any, improvement from last year. Not good, if youre looking to stay employed. "If youre not improving..."
We’re significantly better in PPG allowed from last year to this year.

I don't think it's even close either. That defense gave up 35.67 points per game and couldn't stop the run or the pass. Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Missouri, and Vandy (and Troy) all scored 35+ points. Held two opponents under 20 points.
Yup. I have been watching for over 30 years. Never seen a Tennessee defense like that.

Very accurate as I have went back and looked at the numbers it is very clear had it not been for the games against Richardson, Young, and Rattler I am pretty sure we are not having this conversation and the numbers really back it up. I don't think it was what they did it how easy they did it.
Especially if you take into consideration all 3 of those QB's are likely gonna get drafted in the first 3 rounds. Young is rated in most mocs as the first QB off the board if he measures at least 6 feet tall. Richardson is rated the 3rd or 4th best QB in this years draft right ahead of Hendon. Rattler will likely be a top 5 QB in next years draft. Hilariously Levis is rated the first or second-best QB on most boards. We had some crazy performances by guys but all those guys are people the NFL is looking at.. even Jayden Daniels is rated as a top 5-7 QB. I get it we all think all our opponents suck and cant respect them but NFL scouts rate ALL the QB's that did well against us as fairly high-end talent. This was not backup WR's coming off the bench and beating us (too soon?). Pretty much every QB that put up numbers on us this year is rated fairly high on someone's mock draft.

Think about it as a QB playing UT your coach is gonna be like its on you.. you gotta pass and pass and pass..if you do that enough times against talented QB's bad stuff will happen eventually. Call it the Tony Romo/Dak Prescott effect. Those guys would put up great numbers every year but not have a record to match because they are in situations where they had to throw the ball and had enough talent to put up numbers. In the case of this year QB's put up numbers but like those guys they were empty calories. Young, Daniels,Richardson and Rattler all put up great statlines against us. The interesting stat from that all is that in all those games Hendon had a significantly higher QBR than them all. The 2 games we lost were the only 2 games where Hendon had a lower QBR than his opponent and his only bad QBR game this whole year was UGA...he had one game with a QBR under 84.. 53 vs UGA. His next lowest QBR was against USCe 84.9

His stats this year were amazing....his QBR for the year was 89.4. Those are ridiculous numbers and he probably left about 500 passing yards and about 5TD's out there from coming out of games early.
