Time for a good old fashioned GOP hissyfit

It would only work if the media jumped on it like they did the original quote. It looks like it may be paying off, every network I've seen is talking about it and it puts the spotlight back on Obama and off Palin. Heck, Huckabee has come out and defending it.

Yes, it may be paying off by shifting the media attention back to him, but it smacks of desperation.

The notion that he intentionally used that phrase, when describing the McCain campaign as being more of the same Bush stuff, so as to be sexist is so ridiculous that it is borderline insane.

I don't think Obama meant offense by his remark, however the crowd reaction was telling, and he did absolutely nothing to disabuse them of their own interpretation of his words.

However, his sarcastic reference to Palin as a "moose shooter" was obviously intended to portray Palin as redneckish and dangerous.

It's also obvious that Obama is desperately afraid of Palin. So much so that he isn't running against McCain anymore.

while I don't think the phrase was a big issue, your presumption that it was unintentional is sophomoric. Politicians and their staffs are 100% about mincing words today.

I don't think he meant it in the way the media is portraying it either.

The more troubling aspect is just watching this guy fall apart merely because some woman is getting more attention than him. You Obama supporters really think this guy can handle Putin? Forget the lipstick comment, he looks like a nervous wreck in that little performance.

oh... How we all have been duped. How many of us when they first saw it thought this was a bad move on Obama's part? I get the feeling they had the tape of McCain saying it about Hillary just sitting out on the coffee table.

Obama knew what he was doing and its a risky gamble, like Palin.

It's all absurd. But, the difference in the two is that Obama said it after Palin used it in her speech. This is why I don't think it was planned the way you are thinking.

I am equally convinced of the following:

1) Obama meant nothing sinister, sexist, or underhanded by the choice of that phrase.

2) The Republican outrage is completely manufactured.

3) Obama is kicking himself for having given them the ammunition in the first place.

Obama doesn't know why he made the remark. He'll have an answer tomorrow, after his gurus have seen the polling data and a speechwriter makes decisions and articulates them for him.

True; and very smart. As long as he is distracted by this, he cannot deliver his message of “Change”.

It's the politics playbook.

I actually think this could work out fairly well for Obama.

The polls have shifted due to the convention and VP bounces for McCain. Now, the longer the media is focused on he and Palin, the longer the bounce lasts, and the longer the bounce lasts, the less of it Obama is likely to recover before the debates. With this being the new focus of the media, a lot of the attention that Obama has lost has shifted back.

Now here is where is gets tricky for him. He has to convince the voters that the Republicans are attempting to distract them. He had stated before that the Republicans would attempt to distract the voters from issues at hand. He HAS TO use this opportunity to hammer them. What he said today was a decent start, now tomorrow and Friday he needs to blast them. Saturday and Sunday he should more or less lay low since those are slow days as it pertains to the media anyways. Then Monday come out and really start pressing on the economy and other issues and completely stop the "lipstick" talk.

This does two things, keeps the media attention on him for four days, and allows him to at least appear to take the high ground. If he is able to regain the lead, he can coast into the first debate where if he has a good showing he can once again be in the driver's seat.

That's a basic summary of what I think would be the best course of action over the next week.

It also wouldn't hurt for him to really start throwing some serious cash into Florida in the very near future. Maybe stop spending anything in North Carolina.
