After getting an overdose of evening news....... This was done by Obama on purpose call it rope-a-dope, punk'd or whatever. McCain fell for it hook line and sinker (no offense to fishermen). Now I am questioning if McCain can be duped by a newby how in the name of God is he going to handle heavyweights. Its working very well for the Obama camp and they got the response they wanted and then some.

Let the attacks begin.... :)

I actually think this could work out fairly well for Obama.

The polls have shifted due to the convention and VP bounces for McCain. Now, the longer the media is focused on he and Palin, the longer the bounce lasts, and the longer the bounce lasts, the less of it Obama is likely to recover before the debates. With this being the new focus of the media, a lot of the attention that Obama has lost has shifted back.

Now here is where is gets tricky for him. He has to convince the voters that the Republicans are attempting to distract them. He had stated before that the Republicans would attempt to distract the voters from issues at hand. He HAS TO use this opportunity to hammer them. What he said today was a decent start, now tomorrow and Friday he needs to blast them. Saturday and Sunday he should more or less lay low since those are slow days as it pertains to the media anyways. Then Monday come out and really start pressing on the economy and other issues and completely stop the "lipstick" talk.

This does two things, keeps the media attention on him for four days, and allows him to at least appear to take the high ground. If he is able to regain the lead, he can coast into the first debate where if he has a good showing he can once again be in the driver's seat.

That's a basic summary of what I think would be the best course of action over the next week.

It also wouldn't hurt for him to really start throwing some serious cash into Florida in the very near future. Maybe stop spending anything in North Carolina.
your base assumption is that he can do that and focus on issues without being labeled as the socialist that he is.

David Axelrod would be proud. :)

I think it could work out well for him, too. McCain is obviously desperate and trying to keep the deadcat bounce alive but I disagree with what others have said: that Obama did it on purpose. Namely that he expected it to work out like this.

Also, watch for the O camp to start hitting back hard next week. This week is over. McCain won it. Tomorrow everyone will be focused on Hurricane Ike and this weekend the Sunday shows will focus on how terrible a week Obama had. Next week is crucial for Obama. If he can't turn the narrative around next week, then he may be in trouble.

The debates are important, but it's the general ability to frame the media cycle where Obama has been getting killed. He needs a consistent message and I don't think he needs to attack McCain or Palin -- although they deserve it. All Obama needs to do is point out that it's the Republicans that have been in power of all branches of govt for the past eight years (minus 2 years of a weak Dem congress) and that should be enough for him to win. McCain maverickiness will only get him so far. In the end, McCain and Palin are Republicans, and that's the kiss of death in a CHANGE election where 80% of the country says we're on the wrong track.

Stealing the "Change" mantra was a bad move IMO. Hell, they were hammering a good slogan at the convention but never utilized it.

yeah, because Obama's strategy of linking McCain to Bush has been so successful thus far.

And actually all you need to do is look at the track records of notiable positions held in congress. Obama is still in kindergarden compared to McCain. The fact that we are letting a man who is so inexperienced even run for President it terrifying.

The media is starting to turn on McCain per an article in the Wash Post.

Howard Kurtz - The Anger Factor - washingtonpost.com

This could be a turning point as well - more scrutiny on McCain than Obama

Eh, I really don't think that much of the news media was turned off by McCain just because of that ad. There's plenty of evidence that says they would have pushed the Democratic platform anyway- with or without any postering by the McCain campaign.

Chris Matthews last night referred to the lipstick on a pig comment as classic distraction politics.

Hey, the Dems do it, too. And I hate when they do and say so.

But dang the Republican machine (Hannity, Rush, Boorts, etc.,) have it down to a science.
