Time to do something about schedules

We also get 2 bye weeks
After the bye week the Vols have to play Arkansas, Florida and Alabama for the next 3 weeks. There should have been a UTC or Kent State scheduled between Florida and Bama.

Ever noticed Georgia and Bama seem to getaway each year with not having consecutive weeks of tough rival matchups?

Gosh we got from looking forward to these as they’re the only assured wins to have a shot at a bowl to now they should all be gone and I’m complaining about it because we’re too good. All in a few years.

What a good “problem” to have 🙄

Something has to change imo. Beating the brakes off these small teams and giving them checks just doesnt fly anymore. Fans pay too much money to go to a game that is just a scrimmage. Fans all over college football are leaving at halftime of these games. The TV networks have to be pissed about paying so much for the rights to broadcast and then struggling to keep viewers for more than a quarter.
Here’s my suggestion if we stay at 12 game regular season:
9 conference games
2 out of conference power five games
(Preferably home and home)
1 out of conference game of your choice (can be lower division “buy games” or power five at a neutral site, or whatever you want).

It was classless
What??? GTFO with that nonsense!!

1.) Kent State's coach was approached at halftime by our administration to play shortened quarters in the 2nd half, and he refused.

2.) 65 of our 71 points were scored in the first two quarters. We scored 6 points in the entire second half. We called off the dogs early.

3.) Our backup QB had more touchdown passes than our starting QB. Our 3rd string QB only attempted 5 total passes and we didn't throw the ball the entire 4th quarter.

4.) Our backup running back had more rushing yards than our starting RB. Our 3rd string RB was 2 yards shy of matching our starting RB's rushing total!

What should have Huepel done? QB kneels and punt the entire 2nd half? It wasn't our fault that Kent State sucked so badly on 7 continents. Our backups work hard too and when they get on the field, they deserve to compete just like our starters do!

Yep. Need Danny to stand firm on our rivalries games. Always want to play Bama, but not sure I want a 3 permanent teams schedule. Would rather have one permanent, play 8 others SEC opponents then reset every 4 years. jmo
If there’s only 1 permanent, it won’t be Bama. It will be Vandy. Bama will get Auburn.

The 9 game/3 permanent opponents setup makes the most sense because it allows every team to play every other team home and away during a 4 year span. For Tennessee, it would be Vandy, Bama, and probably Kentucky.

Gotta disagree… these games are necessary for developing your depth. At QB alone, there were 4 guys who played after Nico. Merklinger got to create some valuable game film that will help him develop… and there were multiple other back ups who got rare live action snaps this is how you prepare for the future.
They are also (or at least used to be the only realistic chance for fans not floating in cash to be able to attend a game at Neyland.

Not to mention they all do it I think it’s a way the other schools programs stay afloat. It wasn’t that long ago Austin Peay had to stop their football program temporarily .

I remember when Dooley/Jones/Pruitt were here we'd play these types of games and too often be in a dogfight in the 4th qtr.. l take complaints over running up the score over that garbage all day long
lol.
I remember LOSING some of them!

I also remember watching the Nebraskas and the Oklahomas beating teams 77-0 all the time, and if we scored 42 it was a lot.
No apologies.
Not our job to keep our own team from scoring.
I do feel sorry for them tho, so there’s that.

CJH looked a little perturbed post game during the interview. Not shortening the game, the reason? They probably get more out of practice than this game.

I think the problem may be that when UT scheduled Kent State, they had some semblance of a football team, but then fell off a cliff. Our opponents need to be better than the scout squad for the game to be useful to the team.

Would be interesting to know where Kent State and UTEP were rated when the contracts were signed, need to play at least one instate school pre SEC season for all the right reasons and generate some excess cash to share with other state schools also supported by the state taxpayers, creates more opportunities for instate kids that want to play football.

We do the same thing in basketball and baseball, during the mid week schedules.

Uh, Hello??? The 8th hardest schedule in the nation does not need more difficulty. If you don't like it, don't watch. I suspect that the loudest critics when we lose a game are the same one complaining about winning.

I appreciate that it’s a cheaper game to attend. I’d have to sell my spleen to try and go to the Florida or Alabama game for example, but Kent state is more doable
What’s a spleen going for these days?

Asking for a friend who wants to attend the Florida game.

So you want to do away with small teams right? Bc that’s exactly what would happen. These teams aren’t financially viable without these kinds of games. Add to that some players and coaches get shots at there dreams; dreams that would never happen without an opportunity at smaller programs.

I get what you’re saying but these games actually help us especially early in the season. As a player you can focus on technique instead of being amped up for a worthy opponent in a live setting with no do overs. Plus, look at the reps the younger guys got especially Merklinger. The backups on the offensive line played a lot! Nothing compares to the real thing.

if you cant make it on your own, then fold football and play soccer, That qb from last night looked like he should be on the womens soccer team.
