'22 TN DT Walter Nolen (Ole Miss)

There are lots of moving parts like every recruiting battle. I do know one thing about this recruitment: let's just say every coach on staff is not aligned in their effort to bring Nolen to UT. There are concerns about his "fit" with the culture. Part of that also extends to his family. But he is such a highly rated, talented player that currently lives in Knoxville so that is making it an interesting situation. Let's put it this way: If he lived in Arkansas with no ties to UT our staff would not even be pursuing him.
How in the world could you possibly know this? Are you on the coaching staff?

Losing 3 games in a year where A&M was picked to compete? Beating bama is great, but it gets offset when you then lose to Arkansas, MSU, and Ole Miss. I’ll never understand how a team that struggled to put 10 points on Colorado dropped a 40 burger on bama.

Thank you

I wouldn’t put much stock into this logic. If Garner were able to just pull whomever he wants to ply DL, I imagine we’d have a 5* or 2 committed for this class by now.

Maybe. Maybe not. But how do you know that Garner really wants him? Or if Heupel and the staff still wants him? I am not saying RG can get whomever he wants at anytime.

This is the kind of player we'll start getting if/when we have coaching stability.

Sure hope Heup can last 8 - 10 years. I think all but the most miserable among us will enjoy those years if he does...
What evidence is there that coaching stability had anything to do with his choice? He went where he wanted to go... where he felt he fit best. There were some fairly open questions a few months back about how hard he worked and his willingness to take hard coaching. If true... he's not a guy who needs to be any closer to CRG than College Station.

I do not know much about this recruitment. What I am 99% sure of is that Nolen was told that he would be coached hard and held accountable at UT. If he's talked to UT's DL's or even more so those who left rather than submit to CRG's tough coaching... then better for all involved if he goes somewhere else.

Swain said this morning that Walter needs Rodney Garner more than RG needs Walter

He also said RG is not into games. He wants kids that want to be here and want to be coached. He said he was recruited by RG

If you’re not serious about wanting to be coached hard and get ready for the NFL, that’s a personal issue.

Sounds like Garner doesn’t think Nolen is worth the trouble.

He went to 4 different high schools. Red Flag. Mom and Dad asked for Handouts at Maryville and Alcoa. Red Flag. Multiple people that have seen him play said he is overweight and takes lots of plays off. Red Flag. Bama, Georgia, Ohio St not recruiting him. Red Flag. RG not high on him. Red Flag. 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩

Oh I’m just making the point that if/when we stabilize the program, recruiting the top instate players won’t be nearly as hard as it has been these last 5+ years.

Would be nice to think we are in a position to turn this guy away, but I tend to think we’d take him if he wanted to come to Tennessee.

These days I feel like we have to battle and claw to get top instate talent to look at us. Shouldn’t be that way and won’t be once we have stability.

Yeah, that's glaring, no doubt; but, my question has been, since the moment it was mentioned Garner doesn't really want him...how in the hell did UT go from not even on the radar, to running neck and neck with A&M?

During the summer, we were not even in his top 10, all the way to being runner up??...without the love of his PRIMARY RECRUITER AND POSITION COACH?? Only way it computes is if Garner soured on him just here recent, like within the last 2 to 3 weeks.

That smacks of low IQ by Mom and Dad. #1 rated DL in the class. He should by playing at some national ranked private school if they was ( and obviously were) looking around for schools to go to.

Garner is a very well respected DL coach who’s put numerous players in the NFL.

If you’re a highly touted DL recruit and Garner doesn’t want anything to do with you, there’s something seriously wrong.

Is it laziness or were there some things said? Interesting recruitment.
