'19 TN RB Eric Gray

Not impressed with our RB recruiting unless crouch is being recruited as one, but I think they want him on defense. Weinke was a bit of a bad hire imho

He has DEFINITELY proven to be a bad hire..... what 2-3 months into his tenure? Lol

We have a ton of RBs I believe the staff can slow recruit in this area. Kids do continue to develop in HS.

APB tend to perform a little better in these camps. 7 on 7s and a lot of these drills favor speed over bigger backs. By all accounts so far we are looking for bigger backs that can run between the tackles.

I’m not particularly worried about missing out on Gray. I like Beasely’s upside if they put him at RB. I don’t even think RB is a very big need in this class because I think we have some good guys in our RB room and most of them will be back next year.

I’m just not sure how good of a hire Weinke is yet or if he’s better than RG. RG did a pretty damn good coach for us, so that shouldn’t be an insult to Weinke at this point.

Good Lord, this staff hasn't even coached a game yet and you're already calling someone a bad hire?

Relax. Patience.

Weinke as a RB coach was a curious hire and he’s done nothing on the recruiting trail to dispel that. Niedermeyer was also an interesting hire, but he’s proven his worth in recruiting far more than the IMG-connected, Heisman winning, natty-winning, former quarterback who is now coaching RB’s.

To date in recruiting, Weinke has not lived up to his resume.

Or Osovet. He’s not going to be an analyst very long...same as Sunseri.

I would definitely bet he’d be next in line. He’s smart, personable, innovative, pretty much what you’re looking for.

I think they’ll all be back next year except for London. Chandler, Jordan and Coleman will be juniors and Banks will be a sophomore. I think we try to land 2 prime time backs in the 2020 class.

My only worry about guys coming back is that we’ve got 4 Soohomore RBs (Chandler, Jordan, Fant, and Coleman) and I could see one of those guys transferring and I’m not sure if Fant will stick at RB.

Still, I expect us to return, at minimum, 2 JRs and a Sophomore or RS Freshman RB next year, so even if we just as 1 RB we should be ok heading into 2019. We’ve gotta get in on some studs in 2020 if that’s the case, though. I doubt Chandler sticks around too long if we keep him healthy the next two seasons.

I think the IMG connection is overrated. They have 2 too RBs this year and we aren’t in on either. I’m not sure if any big time recruits Weinke is in on (please correct me if I’m wrong though).

weinke has been gone from IMG for a while. he wont have a real connection to many players. probably knows the coaches there better than any, but nothing really with the players.

Weinke as a RB coach was a curious hire.

Why do people seem to think that former CFB players are only qualified to coach the position they played?

Second, knowing what we do now about Pruitt's preparation and evaluations, I seriously doubt that he would have hired Weinke if he though that he was dead weight.

Personally, I’m less concerned about the fact that he played RB than I am that it’s his first time coaching them at this level.

Like I said though, still withholding judgment.

That’s what I’m seeing as at least a mild concern right now. I see Niedermeyer everywhere for example and only seen Weinke’s name once that I remember. It may be a lot of things like recruiting area, timing, bad RB cycle, but limited college coaching experience and lack of “putting guys in the NFL” has to play in guys’ minds as well.

No panic mode for any reason. Just an observation for now.

I’m still in wait and see mode with Weinke, but haven’t been very encouraged by his recruiting yet either. Gillespie seems to have been just as good or better on the recruiting trail and seemed to get a lot out of his units on the field as well. I’m not sure replacing him was necessary.

I wanna see what Weinke gets out of our guys on Saturdays before I make up my mind though.

The parting was mutual. He left because he wasn’t vibing with the new staff, he wasn’t replaced for any perceived shortcomings regarding recruiting or development. He was the only holdover specifically because of those things.

Idk. Some of the 247 guys seemed to think Gillespie would have liked to stick around.

At tailback, the Vols could be set if they land Crouch, but if they don’t, keep an eye on Eric Gray. The in-state prospect committed to Michigan earlier this month, but Tennessee continues to evaluate the Memphis native and could turn up the heat on Gray in the fall.
