'24 TN WR Amari Jefferson (Tennessee)

I’m never critical of the coaching staff but I do believe they have to start playing more guys at WR, which I do think we will some 4 wideout sets this season. Otherwise I do believe some guys will jump in the portal, and also i’m certain that recruiting the position will become more difficult as I believe other schools with use that to their advantage when trying to convince a kid that he may not get much playing time for the good guys.
I agree with your post but it is hard to argue 11-2 and 6th in the rankings.

I disagree with your take on this. I like the limited rotation, best players play. They are more involved and confidence grows. Also with a small rotation you don't need to recruit a ton of star receivers. Get 2 maybe 3 good WR's a year and that's all you need. Who cares if you land 5 4 star receivers in a recruiting class. Not all of those guys are gonna be happy no matter what you do. Land a couple and save those schollies for other positions.

I have the same concern and would LOVE to see them platoon the WRs. They're not going to sub during drives so about the only way to do it is drive by drive.

That said... Here is a list of each SEC team and the number of WR/TE who averaged at least 1 reception per game and had 200 yds or more on the season:

UT- 6
MSU- 7
UGA- 6
Bama- 6
LSU- 7
USCe- 5
Miss- 4
Ark- 4
UF- 4
A&M- 4
MU- 5
UK- 4
VU- 3
Aub- 4

You could probably argue that other teams give sub TE's and WR's more playing time. But no one really spreads the ball around that much.

I totally agree, my only thought as we continue to recruit the position at an high level does that scare some guys away. As we know some kids want things handed to them. I’ll always be in agreement with the best players play.

So far, it's been about trust. Do you have guys that produce consistently, everyday in practice that you can trust in a game? Example 1....Jimmy Calloway. Two years in a row he showed up in practice, then f***ked up when given his opportunity. Florida game in '21. Then went apesh!+ in the Akron game. Both examples got him benched for the season. Golesh stated last preseason that they'd like to rotate 5-6 guys every game, but you have to have that many guys that you trust during any part of the game.

Spring 2022, Golesh said the coaches were looking to get “6 to 7” guys ready to play outside. He mentioned Calloway, Holiday & Nimrod in particular as some younger guys stepping up.

Fast forward, to your point, neither of the Jimmys nor Walker Merrill nor Nimrod carved out a significant role last year. Fortunately, Squirrel did!

With a 13+ game season, these coaches want at least 6-7 healthy dudes they can depend on to start with. And yes sir, they will all get meaningful PT at WR, if the coaches trust them out there including blocking, assignments etc.

Thanks. 6 was the number I was remembering, so 6-7 is even better than the 5-6 I thought it was. Either way, it's a much greater rotation than 3-4 guys that most people assume the coaches prefer.

I am curious as to why you think they need to change the system that has produced record breaking offenses and our first ever Bilitnekoff winner?

I never stated they needed to change. I do believe and as other posters have stated that the coaches would like to play more guys. Also, as I stated i’m not saying play more guys just for the sake of it.

I believe they will. Depth at WR has been very inexperienced prior to this year & mistakes can cause big issues when you’re running a fast paced offense.

We need 10 WRs? We had 10 receivers record at least one catch last year but only 5 had double digits receptions
Ohio State had 4 WRs with double digit catches.
Washington, the number 1 pass offense had 5 WR with double digit catches, and they had 80 more total completions than us to go around.

IF you have NFL level WR talent and a good passing game you are going to target those guys more. thats just how it works. for everybody. Our scheme does not have a "ball hog" problem.

if you are a WR who just wants to get on the field and run sprints to block for someone else, another school may be a better option. But if what you care about is getting catches or TDs, than UT is just as balanced as any top team.

Our fans really need to stop selling this BS about our offense. You sound like the someone on ESPN or farmersonly.com who don't understand our offense.

Elijah Herring too. was supposed to be a non-factor to get his brother, but has played his way into playing time.
I never felt that way about Herring. Wasn’t he a high 3 star with some legit offers?

Nate was lower ranked than our usual recruits but I bet he will help on special teams at the least

Yeah isn't Nate Spillman really fast? Speed wins in this offense.

Anxious to see him after a year in the weight room, at the training table and with some speed training.

Brother or not do not see this staff using a scholly with nothing on the reward side of the Risk/Reward calculation. It is always possible he had maxed out development and that was not in the calculation.

I’m confused as to what BS I said about the offense. All I did was say a simple stat 😂
