One team is under NCAA sanctions and the other isn't... Not trying to say that Kiffin is a good in-game coach. But comparing what he's doing at USC to what Dooley is doing at Tennessee is pretty much apples to oranges.
I'd argue that at the start of the season, Kiffin was in a better situation than Dooley was. First and foremost, Dooley was UT's third coach in 3 seasons, and for the most part, inherited a very thin roster. Secondly, Dooley actually had to recruit. He couldn't, and can't sit on his laurels and wait for kids to sign up. He had to go out there and bust his ass. He's competing against Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Auburn, etc; For players, and after all the Vols have been through, he has to convince prospects and their parents that Knoxville is the best fit for their futures.
Kiffin on the other hand inherited a team with a stacked roster. You mention the sanctions, yet the sanctions haven't yet affected their program. No, they can't go bowling this season, but they're sure as hell signing a full class. And no major contributors transferred. Secondly, he doesn't have to do much to get kids to come to USC. Last year, Carroll had already laid the blueprint for a stellar class, and they have no major recruiting rivals. It's USC...
There's no excuse for USC to be doing as poorly as they are. And the most insane part is, the Pac-10 is down. The road doesn't get much easier from here.
