No, but in the mid-2000's, the defense was a lot better than most would think.

They were very good in certain situations, but they were basically assembled to defend a lead. The lack of good interior linemen was a big time weakness, especially with their small linebackers.

Almost said this earlier. The D is built to play with the lead and force teams to pass the ball.

Another way to look at the Tampa 2 is this. In 2009, the national champions that year failed to get in the endzone against a Monte Kiffin D.

If USC loses to UCLA and Tennessee wins their bowl, they'll have the same record.

Tennessee played a tougher schedule and has fewer scholarship players.

Lane has no excuse for potentially having the same record as Tennessee. That's just embarrassing and if you think he doesn't have a quality team now, wait two years from now. He'll be 20 players down and have even less talent. Most talented kids aren't going to voluntarily play on a depleted team. Especially when they are playing with 50 guys instead of 70.

One team is under NCAA sanctions and the other isn't... Not trying to say that Kiffin is a good in-game coach. But comparing what he's doing at USC to what Dooley is doing at Tennessee is pretty much apples to oranges.

And no, I'm not defending the coaching staff of SC right now. It's not been good for the most part.

I am, however, defending the usage of the Tampa 2 as a base defense.

Huge. Bob Sanders was the MVP of that playoff run. The D had been pretty average until he returned.

Sanders is a top 5 safety when he's healthy and been playing for a while. Sad that he's had two season ending injuries in the last two year.

But I'll save that for another conversation.

As you should. It works. Plenty of teams still use it quite often. Regardless, I'm not even sure I'd classify it as UT's "base" defense in 2009. Berry was up at the line as often or more often than he was deep in coverage.

In the first year, I think it's a fair comparison. Hell, we probably have less players on scholarship right now.

When he was healthy, I'd take him against anybody. The last two years he's only played three games so it's impossible to judge now. In seven years, he's played in 48 regular season games.

I would never take him over Ed Reed.

The state of mind the teams are in has to be completely different. USC is on probation and on the downswing, and has no postseason to play for, and the staff that's in place feels like an extension of the old regime.

There's a new energy on the hill, and things are clearly on a slow but steady climb.

Wasn't everybody saying this wouldn't be a problem in preseason?
