Tony Basillio confirmed - Kevin Ware won't be released

Players shouldn't be forced to play for a coach they don't want to play for, period.

If universities made it policy to let them out for every little thing that doesn't go how they plan it, you would basically make the LOIs a useless piece of paper, and it would make it a nightmare to recruit.

A head coaching change isn't a 'little thing.'

This kid has only one college career, let him go play where he wants to play. Since so many of you think this is such a good hire, there will be 4 and 5 stars flocking to the program. Mr. Ware by wanting a release understands as I do that the basketball fortunes of UT are on a quick and steady decline.

He lied to him after he already signed the LOI. What would the difference be?

For one this is nothing like the Kiffin case or Bryce Brown case. Kiffin left this school on his own and brown had already played 1 year for UT. Pearl got fired after being backed by Hammy who apparently told this kid the same story as of March 6 which is about 3 weeks ago. This looks horrible on Hammy's part if he doesnt release the kid. He wouldnt be playing for UT anyway so no point in keeping him. And to the person who said he didnt lie then what do you call it when you say something will happen and it doesnt happen the way you said.

That's still a joke. Why the hell should Bryce Brown have to sit out a year just because UT hired some random coach nobody had ever heard of?

Because if players could move freely like that, programs would get raided every time there was a coaching change.

Let me guess, you were a Pearlolphile

So what?? Kid signed a piece of paper stating he would attend the University of Tennessee, not the University of Bruce Pearl. He can get over it, or not honor it. It's his choice.
It's a garbage system. I think it's ridiculous that kids need a release to switch schools when the coach that recruited him leaves.

Why in the hell after playing for a school a whole year would you expect to just leave because the person you wanted as the coach left on his own. Better question...why in the hell would you not take the steps outlined by your coach to get released. Dooley made it easy for Brown. be a man talk to him face to face. give the new program a shot since he was already here. Brown chose to go about it the wrong way. No sympathy for stupidity.

So what? If you hire a coach that nobody wants to play for, take it up with your AD. Don't screw the players that only have a few years of eligibility.

Just let the kid go. He came to UT to play for Bruce Pearl, not his fault that changed. Not releasing him is just going to make us look like scumb.

Where do you set the boundaries of such a system?? If the kid doesn't like one coach or another, he can just go to another program like he can get a new girlfriend?? It's fine the way it is, and it's nothing new that kids are unhappy about it. He can just choose not to come, and then go play for someone else.

That's why kids shouldn't put too much into a coach during the recruiting process. It goes back to the whole "commit to the university, not the coach" aspect.

For the incoming players, I agree. But for those already on the roster I think it opens up a pandora's box

So, are you of the mind this is a terrible hire then?? If so, you might want to talk with the people who recommended him in the first place. Seems like the search firm ran out of Ernie's office in Washington.

Considering the head coach can have a huge impact on a players future, absolutely.

It's fine the way it is, and it's nothing new that kids are unhappy about it. He can just choose not to come, and then go play for someone else.
Not without being penalized.

I'm fine with the hire. I just don't understand why Ware should be forced to play for Martin.

You wouldn't do well in the business world with this mentality. You can just break contract because leadership changes? After the school has given you all this scholarship money to get a free education you should be free to leave because a coach went somewhere else? No matter what the reason. Thats crazy.
