Tracking Saban's Replacement Thread

I probably would too, but I don’t think he’d win at a high level that Bama is accustomed to.

Agree, but then Norvell would be a 4th or 5th choice before desperation kicked in.

The problem for Bama is that this happened right at a time when the most desirable candidates are all in positions they don't want to leave.

Horrible hire. Guy has zero ties to the south. Would not be successful there.

I hope it's true.
He didn't have any ties to the Pacific Northwest either and he went to a national title game in Y2.

Saban also didn't have any ties to the South when he came to LSU.

I think DeBoer would be a great hire for Bama; I just don't think he's coming. He needs Bama for leverage to get a raise now that he went to the title game.

He did have ties to the West Coast though. And he probably did have recruiting ties to Idaho, Montana and Wyoming, which are in the general recruiting area of Oregon.

Man, people on here need to stop and think for a bit. Why does Deboer leave Washington, a team he just made it to the CFP final with 4 days ago, for Bama? And why would Norvell leave a team he just coached to an undefeated regular season and a few votes shy of the CFP playoff for Bama? None of these two have any reason to leave their respective spots, especially to follow the coattails of Saban where they’ll be scrutinized by everyone for the slightest mishaps.

If it’s a big name coach, it’s going to be someone that’s in a current position who has had success, but due to the culture or recruiting or lack of NIL Boosters, etc., of the current place, is never going to make it to a natty. So they’ll see Bama and say, “sure I’ll be scrutinized, but I have a much easier shot there than I do here” (think why BK left ND for LSU). That’s why my money is on someone like James Franklin or possibly even a fired NFL coach like Vrabel who wants to continue coaching, have some success, then head back to the pros. I’ll watch slice of Humble Pie if it’s Deboer or Norvell, but I just don’t see it happening.

Per John Brice-
Those who will be interviewed:
Kalen DeBoer
Mike Norvell
Tommy Rees
Eli Drinkwitz
Mike Locksley

No mention of Lane Kiffin. The nightmare doomsday scenario for some on here is highly unlikely at this point.
All these guys seem like such a step down from Saban.

I mean, think of it. When Bama hired Saban, he was already a national champion winner. He was already an SEC head coach. He had 11 years of experience as a head coach, 10 of those in the Power 5.

And that was all before he coached a down at Bama. They had a sure bet in him.

Compare that to:

DeBoer: championships, but at the Division II level (Souix Falls). No SEC experience. 9 seasons as a head coach, but only 2 of them in the Power 5 (Washington). This is mostly a lower-tier guy who stepped up and won big quickly in the PAC, but will it last?

Norvell: no national championships, did win the ACC this season with FSU and the American conference once at Memphis. 9 years experience as head coach, but almost half of that at the G5 level. This is the most experienced (P5 level) head coach on this list.

Rees: no head coaching experience. Offensive coordinator 3 years with ND, 1 with Bama.

Drinkwitz: one conference championship (Sun Belt) while with App State. 5 years head coaching experience, most of that at Mizzou.

Mike Locksley: no championships of any kind, 9 years as head coach, split between New Mexico and Maryland. Two 8-5 seasons were his best. Even at the limited accomplishments of this list, Mike is badly outclassed by the others. Obligatory interview to a minority candidate? I dunno, maybe that's out of line, but I'm not seeing any other reason he's even on this list. Would be like finding Butch Jones on here.

Saban was the home run hire, back in 2007. Of course lightning won't strike twice in a row. But none of the above are even decent thunderstorms. Norvell (low risk, but not exciting) and DeBoer (more enticing, but much higher risk) are the only two that even come close.

I honestly expected Bama to entice Urban Meyer back into coaching, or hire Andy Reid away from Kansas City. Something eye-opening like that.

Heh, I need not have worried, it appears.

Go Vols!

I definitely call Urban, and after he said no, I call Chris Peterson. Once he shot me down, I probably scan the NFL, see if anybody has their hand up. But where do you go after that? DeBoer is definitely someone you talk to in today’s coaching landscape. I would honestly talk to Kliff Kingsbury. I know he hasn’t exactly killed it anywhere he’s ever been, but he would probably generate some excitement.

I certainly didn’t want to create a new thread on what‘s obviously a very hot topic so I’ll simply post my brief thoughts on this thread…l

1. Love him or hate him, Nick Saban’s achievements has inarguably earned himself a seat in the same rarified air that General Neyland‘s (and Bear Bryant’s) legacy has made to the sport we all have enjoyed across generations of fandom. Personally, I‘d certainly tip my hat him if ever I encountered him now that he’s accepted retirement.

2. I’m happy that our program has finally successfully navigated changes and challenges following the Coach Majors (and Fulmer) regimes and we’re trending again to certainly have a fair shot of getting back to competing (and winning) another SEC and national championship.

Lets go Coach Huepel… and Go VOLS!

Not true, Saban is from W. VA, which we all know is a Southern State. Hence the ties!
