Tracking Saban's Replacement Thread

Not true, Saban was as Ala as they come.

We respectfully disagree and/or remember differently that initial lovefest... they loved him when he arrived at the airport (they would have loved any half decent coaching change)... but he was not The Bear, who bammers were still infatuated with at that time. Maybe you remember how good bammers felt about him on Nov 25, 2007, the day after losing the Iron Bowl for the sixth straight time and a week removed from losing to... Louisiana Monroe.

IMO, he was not as Ala as they come that first year (a Northerner to many and going to do it his way), but, ultimately, IMO the bammers became as Saban as they come.
Their saving grace was they didn't have too wait long. Let's all hope for a longer wait this time!

Horrible hire. Guy has zero ties to the south. Would not be successful there.

I hope it's true.
Again, what ties did Saban have to the south when he was hired at LSU? How about Urban at UF? If he’s the hire he may not end up being successful, but it wouldn’t be because of his lack of southern ties.

Will Alabama wander in the wilderness again?

After Bear Bryant, Alabama hired Ray Perkins, Bill Curry, Gene Stallings, Mike Dubose, Dennis Franchione, Mike Price, Mike Shula all before Saban.

Interesting fact: Bryant, Stallings, Shula, and Saban all lost their final game in Neyland?

Here's the thing - with Lanning now out of it, the options they have to find someone that can keep this ship close to this level are very limited. Their fans might hate it, but Swinney might turn out to be the best option of those that will take the job. If they try the 'successful small school' guy, or hot assistant, we're talking about a major dice roll - those kinds of hires are fine in most places, but not at a place like Alabama replacing the legend or legends. Most coaches would get eaten alive in short time.

I would like to make this observation; Dooley once (in)famously stated that we fans were „looking for Rommel“. In a Sense, Saban WAS Rommel. You hated him because he was the enemy; but you respected him because he was an absolute master of his craft.

Agree. Here's something I'm sure no one will agree with - Alabama at an elite level is good for CFB. You can say the same for only a handful of schools - Bama, OSU, Mich, ND, USC, OK, TX, PSU, and I include UT and UGa in that mix - that are national brands that draw eyeballs and national interest when they are elite.

CFB with parity is essentially the NFL-Lite. How many truly care and need to see TCU, Washington, or Missouri in big games?

Correct, but you’re also describing Nick Saban when he was hired at LSU and urban when he was hired at Florida. Neither of those guys had any connection whatsoever to the south or the SEC. Good coaches will find a way to be successful no matter where they coach.

Very true. DeBoer is the guy I would go after if Lanning doesn't want the job. Dabo is a mess, and I'd bet that there would be a meltdown among the Bama administration if Kiffin was suggested.

That's false. They aren't going to hire whoever they want. Clearly Smart is the best hire. Not happening. I'd argue Sark is number 2. Don't know if he'd go.
no way would sark go. In terms of facilities Texas is at least as good as bammer. In terms of location...much....and I can't stress this enough....MUUUUCCCCCHHHHHH better! Same with the money aspect (think NIL).

Why in the HELL would sark give that up to fail to live up to Saban? Because it doesn't matter who it is...they will fail.

You'd think they'd pick someone who didn't lose to Michigan.
And who would that be? Saban and Mel Tucker aren't exactly available.

Chryst? Seriously? Sonny Dykes? C'mon.

Day and Smart aren't moving to Bama.

There's a few more, I think, but it's not like Michigan has been losing to everybody, ya know? Who would you suggest?

Drinkwitz name being thrown out there. I really hope this ends badly. Karma owes us
They need a Kiffin, followed by a Dooley, a Butch, and a Pruitt

Tucker is very much available last I heard. It will be Deboer or Norvell. Most likely Deboer, which I'm great with!
