The private owners lease portions of the railroads to management companies for up to 75 years. They have to follow gov regulations for levels of safety and training. If they can’t hold those standards, they contract is broken and another management company is contracted that has a better safety record. Owners remain out of any possible repercussions and the failed management company moves on to try to find another contract. They have the financial burden of leaving the rail road as they found it. It can cost them millions by the time litigation is done. It’s a Quagmire.You would think that the rails would be critical infrastructure. And if they are being used to transport military equipment, they are of national security importance. At the very least, shouldn't some of the military budget go towards refurbishing/maintaining our rail lines? Or will the argument be that since they are privately owned, that the govt doesn't need to fund them but the freight carriers do?

The explosion severely contaminated the waterways and showered the town with toxic materials—much of which is could potentially lead to widespread & long term health issues for residents
The government has been telling us for over a year now that they had no choice to but to blow up the train cars, or else they'd blow up anyway.
