Transfer Portal 21-22

Aren't athletic scholarships only for one year? The school then has the option to renew it each year, so the coach or school can opt not to renew in any situation thus releasing the student athlete.

Not what I understand. At least as it pertains to basketball I understood that a coach cannot pull a scholarship for performance related issues. Can only be done for academics and disciplinary reasons.

So yes, they may be reviewed after each season but a coach cannot just pull a scholarship because they no longer want a player or do not feel they can compete at the level they were recruited.

I think they can pull them or not renew them, but it just isn't done very often at all. There have been basketball coaches who have done especially on the men's side, but they tend to get a lot of bad press when it's done. Pretty sure Jeff Walz has done this before.

You can go look it up. They have to have a very good reason anymore.

For Walz I believe the players he released were preferred walk-ons rather than scholarship players. I think they were given a season to earn one but did not and transferred to mid major

The Grambling volleyball coach just pulled ALL scholarships.

Seems like most of the top kids in the portal are more interested in winning than playing/starting.

With the condition of her knees I think she would welcome the opportunity to play equal minutes with TK on a really really good team. Whoever our backup post is will play just as many minutes as the starter I suspect.
Key does too much defensively for us. She’s not coming off the bench
Heck, a player like Martinez might even have Key coming off the bench. Kellie will start whoever her best 5 players are. I know that much.

Agree to disagree. TK has improved in a few areas, mostly shot blocking ability, but not in others, certainly not consistently. If she continues to not help us offensively and we bring in a post who can, I think the Sr starts giving way to the younger player eventually.
She struggled during some of the physical games which only means she needs to be toughened up and hit the weight room harder. You don’t toss a player who got a triple double to the side. Key will not be a bench player and I’m willing bet on it. I’m sure some of you guys want Strip to start so badly in her place but it’s not happening. Only player in the portal that stands a chance at a starting spot is Angel. And even then I see her taking a spot from a guard by moving her to the 4 spot and Rikea to the wing with Horston at 2

Not at all. I have zero want for Key to be benched nor Striplin to start in her place. I want Key to help in areas other than shot blocking. All I said was if she continues to struggle offensively, which she very clearly did by the end of the season, as a Sr I can see a younger player taking some of her mins later in the season. We need at least a modicum of offensive production inside.

Gotcha…I just think she needs to hit the weight room. To me she plays better against taller posts players than the one under her armpits. 😂 I preferred a post my height or taller myself.

Angel plays with a chip on her shoulder and I actually like it. She’s one of those players you’re either going to love or hate. I like cocky players that has the skills to back it up. And unless I missed something I never seen her show that attitude towards her teammates

I know there has been some speculation about how active UT in trying to get more portal players, and if so, how many. Kellie was quoted in todays Sentinel column by Adams that they are looking daily at the portal and could conceivably take two more. I would post the article here, but it is was of their occasional "subscriber only" articles.

Key's scoring did fall off towards the end of the year. I think she was doing everything the same way she did earlier but was just not getting the ball as much due to the emergence of Alexus, the struggles of Rae to get back to full strength, the loss of Jordan, and defenses adjusting to her after Jordan went out. All players need to improve (continuous improvement) and by all accounts, all of them did/are. I agree that the backups need minutes and the center minutes have to come from Tamari. Thats not a slight to her.

Why didn’t you state this in your original post? The original post made it seem to apply to all schools. I knew of the P5 exclusion and do not like your sa cover.

This is Vol nation. Why would I not be talking about P5 schools? Use your common sense. This is a topic that has come up before and has been asked and answered numerous times.

It’s a message board if you need every detail spelled out for you. LOOK IT UP YOURSELF. Just like I did.
