Transfer Portal 22-23

The facts are no one knows what will happen with the Lady Vols next season. We have talent to be relevant in the NCAA tournament and in the SEC. No we did not get the top rated players in the portal but we got players with a boat load of potential. We also need to quit worrying if TK will be in shape for the season, she will be just fine. Support the team and hope the coaches have it together. I believe they will.

Possible sleeper player I think we should look at is Chandler Prater. 5’11” RSJr guard out of Kansas. Averaged 9.5 pts and 6 rebs.

Handles the ball well and has a high motor, really a nice player. Still not committed as far as I can tell. She is a Jordan Horston type player. Not a great 3 point shooter but lots of potential.

Spear and Wells were both top-rated portal players. What list have you been reading?

Biggest Winners/Losers IMO curious to see what others think.

Winners

1. LSU
Only took two players but Morrow and Van Lith were arguably to best two available this season.

2. Louisville
They have taken a boatload of transfers but all of them can play. How they use them and their ultimate chemistry remains to be seen.

3. North Carolina
Donarski, Gakdeng and Nivar are all game ready players that will improve them from day 1.

4. Tennesee
We have upgraded the guard positions exactly as we needed to. Wells and Spear bring 3 point shooting and an ability to score at will that we have not had in some time.

5. USC
Southern Cal picked up some really nice, veteran players. Especially at the guard spots. Still think Lindsey Gottlieb is the Elizabeth Holmes of women’s basketball. All vision and no results. But she has the players to make a move now.

6. Oklahoma State
Their portal additions were very smart and will make them a better team right away. They have a great young coach and I really liked their style of play last season. If Gusters can get in shape they could be a real contender on a national stage.

HM
MSST they added a couple kids who can score but I’m not sure they are athletic or big enough to do it in the SEC.

TCU added some nice players but will be hard to tell what they can do until they play. New coach and new roster. Could go either way IMO. Should be fun to watch!

Losers

1. Auburn
They lost a lot of talent and have not been able to replace it at the same pace. Look for them to struggle in the SEC next season. The bulk of their athleticism hit the portal.

2. Arizona
Lost several quality players and brought in 3 mid-major caliber players. Place just looks more and more like a dumpster fire to me.

3. Arkanas
Lost most of their motor and half their rebounding to the portal. Rebounding was their biggest issue by far last season and it wasn’t addressed at all.

4. Oregon
3 quality players out, no players in. Since Campbell left the program they have been on the slide.

5. Duke
Lost nearly all their guard play to the portal. They will be starting over completely from the guard spot. Never a good thing in WCBB.

6. NC State
They struggled way more this season than expected. Most of their talent and rebounding hit the portal and they have not been able to replace it. Wes Moore may be on the downhill side of his career at this point.

HM
South Carolina
Hard to put them on the losers side and I’ll probably catch heat for it. But with what SC lost this season they simply have a lot to prove. Don’t think PaoPao is ready for the physicality of SEC play. We all know how talented their young players are but haven’t gotten to see them yet. I don’t think Walker will be very effective in the SEC. She played well at the JUCO level but her first two seasons in P5 play were meh at best.

Texas
They have a nice roster returning but a goose egg from the portal. I highly doubt that was from a lack of trying too. Toward the end of the season their body language and play looked horrible.

*Texas A&M side note. I just don’t see what everyone got so excited about. I don’t think the players they added change them that much. Barker is a stud but a head case. Rogers can score the ball and will help them but Joni can’t coach and I won’t be shocked if her scoring is down 5-8 points playing in her system. Ware isn’t an offensive threat, she physical and tries to rebound but that’s about it.

Hey! Imo that’s truly where we fall. Spear and Wells are excellent additions and addressed the exact needs we needed.
Will Spears and Wells be better at D? I only saw a few games on TV last year, but it often seemed like Our guard play on D was lacking.

I know where both were rated but neither were top 10 in any rating I read. I am not knocking either player. Very glad to have both. They could be rated top 50 and still be great players.
Spear got in the portal very late, April 26, and was only in a week before signing here. Not much time to be ranked, tho ESPN did have her #2 among guards left in the portal. Wells got in very early and also wasn't in very long before becoming an LV. I do remember a list somewhere that had about 9th among PGs in the portal at the time.

I love that both signed quickly, both cancelling other visits. Both appear to really want to be here, and importantly, both seem aware and accepting that their shots and scoring are likely to go down. Both understand the significance of playing with Rickea on her last stand. Neither is proven in the SEC, but both appear to have all the tools we're looking for. I feel really good about both and I'm pretty sure we won't have the early chemisty issues we had last yr.

That's the big question. Spear (no 'S' on the end guys, it's not fear the Spears) addressed it honestly in her interview a couple of days ago. Said it hasn't been her strong suit but that KJH had emphasized that strong D is required. Spear said she is looking forward to getting really good at D and rebounding to be a more well rounded player. Same can be said of Wells. Both players seem to have the physical attributes and quickness to play good D, tho Wells is a little small. I believe both will be upgrades on D, esp Spear fm the 2 guard position.

I would put Ole Miss somewhere in the "winners"....or replace Oklahoma State with them
I can't remember who Ole Miss got. Anyone we'd consider an impact player?

Did I miss a Couliboly decision? How about Owusu? Any other impact players left in the portal?

KK Deans 14ppg at Florida and Todd-Williams from UNC 13ppg. Both impact players that will improve them. My only issue there is I can’t picture where Todd Williams fits with that they are bringing back. Again Yo adding combo guards to a team full of combo guards.

Deans should be a good replacement for Angel Baker.

Thanks, I thought in general Yo held ground but didn't make any huge leap forward. Myah Taylor is out of eligibility right?

Yes Taylor is done. After looking I think maybe Baker has a COVID year but idk. That made so confusing. Glad that’s over after this season for the most part.

IMO I think SC got who they needed. Paopao made 81 threes at a 43% clip and is also a pretty good passer with 111 assists last season. Her percentage would’ve been first in the SEC and her makes would’ve been second behind Chrissy Carr from Arkansas who shot more 3s than 2 percentage field goals. So in reality she’s the best returning 3 point shooter in the SEC based on that. No doubt that’s an upgrade rather downgrade for what they needed. Same with Walker. Back up post with nice shooting touch and very capable giving Cardoso some rest. You don’t think facing Stanford, Wash St, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, UCLA, etc hasn’t prepared Paopao for what the SEC will bring? I think she’ll be more than ready to handle the physicality.

Personally I think Mair is an upgrade over Day-Wilson, but they won’t be able to replace Celeste so easily. Ashlyn Jackson could break out and Reigan Richardson is still very good. Duke will probably count on Donovan and Thomas a lot as youngsters and I think they will be up for it. I’m far from a Duke or Kara supporter but I wouldn’t count her her. If she can get an offensively minded coach they’ll be in good shape.

A&M has some really nice pieces coming in next year and I hear they’re definitely trying to use that last scholarship for Coulibaly. Joni already had a nice recruiting class with Sole Williams, Erica Moon, and Kylie Marshall. I think adding Rogers, Ware, and Hunter will definitely help them, especially the way they finished last season. I actually think Joni will coach them up and have them in the top half of the SEC.

Nice take, always like to hear others thoughts. I know you’re a SC fan so makes sense.

I maintain Joni can’t coach a lick. A&M just doesn’t concern me. They’ll be a middling to 4th place team for as long as she’s there. Her COY award was a joke. They were like 10-5 in SEC play and bounced in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Never been to a Sweet 16 and none of her players improve.

Can’t name any players she’s coached that are in the WNBA. Clearly she’s got a good recruiting pitch because she can land them, she just doesn’t know what to do with them once they are there.

Mair is a super passer but Duke really needs scoring. That was clear based on this season. Their offense was abysmal.

There are other coaches who don’t have WNBA players either lol but I get your gist. She does have a lot to prove, but with the way Barker ended the year makes me think they will be very good this coming season. Adding Rogers and Ware to what they already have with Bowles, Barker, Jones, Malone and their freshman class is a nice roster.

Give Mulkey that roster and they are SEC champs. With Joni at the helm they are 4th at best.

I suspect they will be 6th in the SEC.

I’m going

LSU
Tennessee
SC
Ole Miss
MSST
A&M
UGA
Bama
Arkansas
MIZzOU
UF
Vandy
Auburn
Kentucky
