Transfer Portal 22-23

A few of our more connected posters have intimated that the powers that be went big on Rickea Jackson's NIL deal, but in turn, there might not be a lot left in the tank for other NIL situations. I've wondered if that's part of why we're seeing some of these big portal names show interest but then go elsewhere. Is there a gap in NIL capacity that's impacting these portal efforts?
Rickea did not get money from donations made to the Boost Her Club. Her money came from the advertising department at Furrow Automotive Group and I've read it's 75K and the use of the Benz for a year. Furrow had a similar deal with quarterback Hendon Hooker last year, but I bet he got much more money. In exchange, they appear in commericials, do appearances, publicity, etc.

What happened w Rickea is probably the ideal of how NIL can work. Furrow was open to doing a major deal w a female athlete this year. Just happened that the highest profile female athlete on campus wanted to stay, and understandably was looking for something roughly equal to what she would make as a first round WNBA draft pick. The Boost Her Club simply played matchmaker, acted as an agent.

So there was nothing taken from the "tank" except perhaps using up one of their best corporate donors. Where the tank does get used is for the many events the club stages for all their contract athletes: dinners, painting, meet n greets, adult camp coming up, etc, etc. Rickea and the other bball players under contract are everywhere making appearances and working for what they earn. In fact, one big thing I worry about w NIL is how much of their time it takes up. Can't imagine in season juggling all this w classes. practice and travel.

Apparently the gap in NIL capacity comes not from one player "using it up" but from a lack of enough corporate and private donors willing to make impactful deals. It's the Club's job to develop these relationships but it's running into alot of misunderstanding of the concept and embracing the stereotype that NIL is just handing over suitcases of cash to spoiled, entitled brats who are already getting a free ride.

I know they have to be equal and act excited for all signees, but I agree, this particular 'BOOM', if it's what we're afraid it is, would go down not as a bang but a whimper.

Fine well and good if we get a friend for Edie, but it we don't get an upgrade at shooting guard before all is said and done, it will be a big recruiting fail.

If it's the HS kid, that's great but still not addressing immediate needs.

People do also realize that if it IS Strickland, she isn't going to probably be the last addition we make, right? Lady Vols still have like 4 or 5 spots open I think. They're still gonna add more players.
yeah ppl need to think like this. she’s a solid depth player. she’s only gonna be a sophomore, so she has so much more time to develop. that does not negate the fact that we definitely do need more big transfers in, but you take her bc u have so much roster room and she has experience being a starter in the ACC.

Staff needs to stop doing the “teasers” when players visit. Need to quit doing the BOOM as well unless it’s going to be an impact player or a HS recruit.

If they lead us on and make us wait to find out they signed Strickland it’s just going to piss off the fan base even more.

I wouldn’t mind if we were signing players worth announcing, but if we’re scraping the bottom of the barrel I hardly think it’s a good idea to gas everyone up. Gonna hit like a lead balloon.
The first thing I thought was the have missed with all the top guards so were getting the next level in here. We'll see if that is true. Darby and Strickland guarding the perimeter is the nightmare of all time.

True we passed on her twice and then suddenly we need her? Do we have anyone else cause our roster just doesn't look like one that could even do as well in the SEC as the team this year. Ole Miss, A&M, and Alabama are rising and thus far we are falling back.

Was out and about today, listening to the radio, and heard KJH got an extension. Not really sure why. Anyway, Jayson Swain said she something along the lines of she has us rolling in recruiting. At first, I thought it must be sarcasm. But he kept talking like he believed it. How has she had us rolling in recruiting? No high school recruits this year, and last year's high school recruits have already left. I get that we had a nice transfer class last year, and that we're still working transfers this year, but if you can't get and keep kids out of high school, that is recruiting failure. Eventually, it will catch up with us. Blame NIL all you want, but a huge chunk of this falls on KJH. She's the head coach. I've seen head coaches in other sports call out their fans saying they needed more support. IF that's the problem, maybe KJH needs to do the same thing? Challenge the supporters to do more. Do something. I just don't see our current recruiting model working out in the long haul.

Come on, VolBall09, please do not describe any player considering TN, as “scraping the bottom of the barrel”.

Those former football guys now on radio know nothing about what is going on in women's basketball. Were not rolling in recruiting unless he means rolling towards the bottom.

God forbid that Strickland hears any of this garbage yall are spewing. Or any recruit for that matter. Absolutely trash behavior from some of you.
If a player either knows or cares what's said on an old fashioned fan forum, she has a priority problem. Any high level athlete should have gotten over this long ago.

I'm not trying to be mean about Strickland, but there's some context here. We are so, so close to having a really good team and need one or two more key pieces out of the portal. Got Wells early and gained momentum. The next need is widely agreed upon: a perimeter player who can shoot the 3 against elite competition AND guard the perimeter w quickness. This one has been a long time coming. When we get teased with a roster addition and it is far less than that crucial piece, it's frustrating. Nothing personal.

Why am I reading on Twitter that Kellie’s Boom was because of her contract extension! 😩😩😩😂😂😂😂😂😂 I’m going to be so mad if that’s the case! Girl we don’t need a “BOOM” for that! 😒😂
LOL, I saw that but I think it's a joke. Pretty sure Kellie would not do that. But I do think this is Strickland. So the wait for that elite, quick perimeter player goes on.

We still have five scholarships so her signing if she is the player doesn't interfere with getting the players we need. I just hope were not going to get overloaded again as Kellie likes everybody to play and that killed us a few times. I thought we might settle for a roster of 12 but now we need at least 13 cause if we fail to get another post you can't get one if Key suddenly can't play or for any reason can't play all season. It would be a move for insurance at the position. Then we need a power guard that can do it all even two would be fine. Teams like A&M, Alabama, and Ole Miss are moving up fast going to be tough season with our present roster.

Kiki Jefferson to Louisville. Jeff can get em, he just can't keep em.

That is huge for him. He is better off JMO with her instead of Van Lith she totally covers that loss. Like him or not he knows how to build a winning roster something we seem to not be able to do to the full extent that is necessary. He made the elite eight and is loading up to get there again.
