Transfer Portal 22-23

NIL is playing a huge factor, we saw it with two high school recruits in 2023, they came to see what we had to offer and threw out some numbers and then took it to the other program and got more $ there and both players ended up signing with the other program.

NIL is not created equal. What one state/school can offer, many others can not. Also some states allow the schools (coaches) to facilitate and help fundraise but can not personally donate funds, doesn't mean it wont stop some of them donating money on behalf of a charity they are connected to.
So all these other programs can get the top players but we can because of integrity?

A lot of the things some of the posters on here want Kellie to do to land some of these players, she is just not going to jeopardize the programs integrity to do so and I don't blame her.

Certainly not asking for anyone to do anything Illegal, but the bottom line is if you can't get players in here that can compete for Championships then you probably won't be coaching much longer. If Tennessee can't get elite players like they used to with this coach then we need to get a coach that can get them.

I read what you are saying. Kellie is having to clean up a lot of what Holly messed up She never gets the credit for how much Rae, Kam, and KK improved under her compared to playing under Holly. She never gets the benefit of having TK and Jordy stick around when I'm sure year after year coaches were probably soliciting their best player to convince them to enter the portal and come play for them. She is damned if she do and damned if she don't it seems.

Many wanted Kara here and she is having her top talent hit the portal left and right yet many are in here losing their mind because of players who rarely played here are leaving. All of this can be viewed as excuses but what coach really wants to come here and deal with the constant comparisons to what Pat did? Or fans constantly criticizing every move she is trying to make.

It's just April, no one saw us landing Rickea last season, nor did anyone see us landing Jillian as she passed on her former coach and came to play for Kellie. BTW Rickea also passed on her former coach as well.

What's meant for Tennessee will be for Tennessee. I want who wants us, not who we have to constantly try to over pay for and the moment they aren't happy they are leaving again or destroying the chemistry of the team.

I agree, I love Kellie and company but this isn’t a good look. If we land another really quality transfer we will be fine. But if we lose 3 to the portal and bring in only Wells and a couple low level transfers it’s looking bleak.

NO school can offer NIL money directly to any athlete. Schools have programs to advise on related issues such as "branding", "ethics" and navigating the current NIL rules. NIL deals are separate from the institution, player scholarships, etc. There's a reason you can't represent the school itself (wearing a uniform) in your NIL marketing. There are other athletes at TN with NIL deals. Are those coaches doing something unethical? If you're an outstanding athlete or physically attractive, you will get deals with plenty of sponsors. Gatorade could give 2 ishes who you play for. They pay for visibility and influence. Do you think the UMiami bankrolled the Cavinder twins? They chose Miami to become more visible and to set up for the future in a big dollar market. One was a decent player and TBH I'm not even sure what their first names are. lol BTW...the Syracuse AD recently told a multimillion-dollar booster to kick rocks to avoid even the appearance of "buying" players.

I don't care if these kids make a buck. Most will probably not recoup all the money they spent coming through AAU. The VAST majority will not make big bucks. Sure there will be a few who maximize the opportunity and sell out to the "best deal", but this doesn't even apply to most recruits. And it's not a deal a coach can offer during recruiting. Teams with collectively lower levels of talent and fewer NIL players aren't encountering the sustained issues with recruiting as TN. My personal opinion is that even prior to NIL and COVID, players that left weren't complimentary about the program and now they are still leaving or...being nudged (intentionally or not).

So put yourself in the position of a recruit. Would you trust the recruiting pitch? You know...the family thing? Is the TN legacy still intact when you look at recent history? Are the fans loyal? Or are they cutthroat? Love you when you get recruited and start tearing you down...sometimes before you even play? I'm 1000% certain that recruits check out these platforms. Everything is transparent. Lot going on here, but "winning" will fix a lot of it.

That doesn't answer a single thing about what I said, and doesn't give me any insight into the NIL situation at Tennessee. How do you know it "doesn't matter?" And if it didn't matter, why would people be mentioning the strategy around putting a lot of the available money into helping Rickea return? Moreover, if it didn't matter, thn why did we all hear about UConn outbidding Tennessee for Ashlynn Shade? Why didn't we just counter their offer?
I don’t know everything about it, but I know a player can make money off their name and image, yes the school can help but any company can come in and make a deal with a player if they felt like it was a good investment.

Ashlynn Shade's dream was to play for Uconn since she was a little kid or that is what she was quoted as saying anyhow when she signed with them.

Staff needs to stop doing the “teasers” when players visit. Need to quit doing the BOOM as well unless it’s going to be an impact player or a HS recruit.

If they lead us on and make us wait to find out they signed Strickland it’s just going to piss off the fan base even more.

I wouldn’t mind if we were signing players worth announcing, but if we’re scraping the bottom of the barrel I hardly think it’s a good idea to gas everyone up. Gonna hit like a lead balloon.

Yeah, they better take notice of how Bud Light screwed things up with their fans recently...

When you say why didn't "WE'...who is we? NIL is just too new to attribute to TN recruiting issues over many seasons. I doubt a Patterson or Shade, though highly ranked, were waiting on the best NIL deal for a couple of reasons. Their social media presence is pretty tame. They probably wouldn't play much as a Freshman. Most schools are in the infancy stage of comprehending how to integrate NIL let alone be able to wield it as a deadly recruiting weapon. I know some THINK they have. But, keep watching. Lopez Senechal went 5th (?) in the latest draft. She probably didn't have a "water bottle" NIL deal. lol

I'm pretty sure due to the NIL rules say a foreign-born player can’t receive NILs. Lopez Senechal cant receive NILs

Lot of assuming around here, who says it’s not a hs recruit

Do other coaches do a "Boom" over getting a recruit? I can see maybe winning your conference or definitely wining NCAA.
I guess times are a changin.

From what I hear, we can go ahead and get pissed.

Yeah, I think the "Boom" tweets need to go. It all started with Dawn Staley anyway when A'ja Wilson committed, so I always thought it was strange that Kellie started using it. Now it has been watered down to the level of "everyone gets a participation ribbon".
