'24 Transfer Portal

They had Gaston Moore as an insurance policy if Joe got hurt and Nico couldn’t perform. I am not saying we need to look for someone to take over the starting job but I think we need an insurance policy in the instance Nico gets hurt.

I am fine with riding with Nico and building on the future but if he gets injured and they finish 6-6 or worse there will be a portion of the fan base calling for CJH job.
I’m just giving a rebuttle that most coaches hope for just one QB to play all season. But injuries happen a lot and we do need good backups. Portal, that is harder and harder to do. We may just have to pray the starter is good and rely on talented freshmen to be backups.

From my understanding players can enter the portal at any time and remain immediately eligible if there was a head coaching change at their current school --and/or-- they are a graduate transfer...

But outside of that technically if they enter the portal outside of the allotted window, they would not be eligible and would have the sit out a year.

The reality is with the current timeline we are on, a week out... None of these names are gonna be enforced because they won't officially enter their name (file the paperwork) until the window opens next week. But it's gonna be hard to keep that under wraps as it's going through get out, via players tell each other their plans, or leaked by prospective schools, media, or family/handlers.

True, but don’t see that happening. I’ve been wrong plenty but I don’t see a legit portal QB coming in. Nor do I see anyone beating out Nico.
Nico has thrown less than 30 passes this season and people think he is a super hero that cannot be topped by anybody in the country. I think he will be a good qb. They won't be able to get the top transfer qbs to come here and compete for it. They could get a qb to come in and compete. Might not be a super highly rated guy that you would drool over. Might be an undersized guy without a rocket arm. Find a guy with good accuracy and football knowledge. If not, our qbs on the 2 deep next year will have a total of less than 30 passes in a college game. 😬

This…

Get a kid who’s not the pro body type, maybe even knows it but it’s solid fundamentally and can complete all the passes but maybe not looking amazing doing it. Maybe he isn’t that fast, average arm and 6’1” but if he was surrounded by talent he’d be perfectly adequate.

Using that logic Merk would not have committed and we will not get another QB commit until Nico leaves.

Do you actually think CJH told Merck he wouldn‘t have a shot at the starting job? I would also bet that Nico has been told he has to earn the job in the spring.
Merk has 4 years to win the job. A portal QB has 1 or 2.

Of course CJH didn’t tell Merk he didn’t have a shot. He wouldn’t tell a portal QB that, either. Because it’s not true in either case.

a) they’re not making their decisions based solely on what CJH tells them, and b) they’re not looking for a “shot” at this point in their careers. They’re looking for a place that almost guarantees a starting job. That’s why they’re transferring.

Basically, they’re looking for a place that gives them what Nico has at UT.

What’s his name?
