Trump on track for Supreme Court Victory on Census Citizenship Question

Very interesting set of developments on his of late. While proponents innocently claim that the purpose and effect of the proposed citizenship question is just to get an accurate count, the computer files of the person relied upon by the administration to propose this show that the ACTUAL purpose is to reduce participation by non-white persons, in particular Hispanics. Further, that the anticipated effect is to help white persons and hurt minorities, and help the GOP but hurt Dems.

Next, Trump is invoking executive privilege to try to hide linkage to these intended purposes and likely effects.

Pretty convincing stuff at this point that the stated purpose and effect is another fraud by the likes of Miller.

It’s ok, if they don’t participate, the census will account for them in their imputations

The U.S. Supreme Court’s conservative majority on Tuesday appeared inclined to hand President Donald Trump a victory on his administration’s plan to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census, a move opponents call a Republican effort to deter immigrants from taking part.

During arguments in the closely watched case, conservative justices rallied in defense of the administration’s stated justification for using the citizenship question in the decennial population count, while their liberal counterparts remained skeptical.

The court has a 5-4 conservative majority. Among the conservative justices indicating support toward the administration’s stance were Trump’s two appointees, Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch, as well as Chief Justice John Roberts, considered the court’s pivotal vote.

Trump on track for Supreme Court victory on census citizenship question
Boom!

I have not had time to read them, but politically speaking the citizenship question is a major victory for Democrats and suggests a strong rebuke of the Trump administration for fabricating its explanation for the question. The Court is warning the administration that it knows what it is up to with this.

On the flip side, the gerrymandering case is a major victory for the GOP. Both sides engage in it, but the GOP controls a significant majority of state legislatures, so they use that political tool more to their benefit than do the Dems.

Was the issue not simply sent back to the agency?

The Court didn’t rule the question illegal.

Gerrymandering is just wrong IMO but I have to agree it doesn't appear unconstitutional.

I'm curious if you believe gerrymandering is bad for America?
Full disclosure, I have never cared enough about it to look into it but a guess would be both sides do it and probably needs to be cut out. I also agree it's not the SC's place to get involved.

I bet Roberts won’t cast a deciding vote to overturn Roe.

It will take a sixth “Conservative” Justice for the Right to land that blow

They did. Said it was perfectly fine to be on there but that the argument was bad.

Not sure when the census comes out but they need to get it redone and sent back up ASAP.

April 1st.... that sounds like a long time away, but in the context of this discussion - it's not. Now, aside from the fact that it's something that the Trump administration is pushing for, can any conservatives explain why that question is so important? The purpose of the census is to collect statistical data about U.S. citizens to determine the appropriate divisions of house seats and to provide a basis for apportioning federal taxes and funding among states. The goal should simply be to obtain as accurate a head count as possible.

You’re not wrong, but I will say I don’t see why US citizens would hesitate to fill it out.

Did you just say that there was very little difference between John Roberts and Ruth Bader Ginsburg? The conservatives here go to extremes to try and make a point.
He saved obamacare he saved House seats for the socialists, he has tuned out to be the worst decision Bush made

I don't have a problem with the question itself, actually. I just think that this has been blown up into way too big a deal. And that nobody really wins if we aren't doing an accurate count of the people living in this country... but even then, it's still not as big a deal as some want to believe. It's doubtful that much would change in those federal appropriations anyway, because illegal aliens tend to live in our most populous areas. Trump may not want to believe this, but even without illegals, California and Texas are still easily our two most populated states.

I just think that conservatives view this as a game, and things like this (as silly as they are) are "wins" for Trump.... get a life.

Reagan tried a similar thing and Saturday Night Live did a skit. Been a long time but the joke was, after asking if the respondent was a citizen, there was a follow up question, "If someone were looking for you, where would you hide?"

Point is, the entire Court saw through the charade of reasons offered by the Trump administration given the mass of evidence that the real reasoning was to discriminate. So sure, it gets sent back, and the department can try to make its internal reasoning match what it publicly claims. But the other side will be entitled to discovery, to take depositions, to quiz the decision makers on the real reasons for it. And then that goes back to the lower courts. It does not go back to the Supreme Court.

The process would take several years, at least.

The Court has called the Trump administration a liar on this subject. No way the administration goes back only to be embarrassed again.

Its over.
