Trump can say it's worth whatever, he can only write off on his returns his cost basis for it. A first year IRS auditor would catch if he wrote off something a lot higher. It gets a little more complicated for inherited property (which this wasnt) or for 1031 property (like kind exchange)

In the end something is only worth what someone else would pay for it. I've always thought property evaluation is only reasonable if the entity establishing the valuation is willing to pay what they say a property is worth. Imagine if cities and counties were forced to buy property they've assessed if the owner said "OK, it's yours for the assessed value."

The biggest thing they do is occasionally (when they can get the normal RINOs in line) is block legislation ... or more often just watch it passed without a republican vote. None of those guys will get down in the mud and fight with the dems - they believe themselves above it. Trump wasn't opposed to rolling in the mud with the dems, and republicans didn't think it dignified ... meaning they weren't going to live up to the standard of jungle warfare that Trump set. Sometimes the only way to win is to beat the other guys at their own game, and the GOP is simply unwilling to do that. If the GOP were running Ukraine, Ukraine would be part of Russia now.
