Turkey: Our NATO Ally

The problem is trying to get them out of there now if they are actually there. The Turks wouldn't allow it and we'd end up in a shooting situation.

I've been told they are still there. But worthless with out our guys "arming" them.

Biggest fear was a dirty bomb being manufactured from one.

Could we Stuxnet them?

Wouldn't help. Trust me, the Turks monitor everything on that base very closely. Having said that to say this, during maintenance on said devices, it wouldn't be hard to pull the critical components and replace them with fakes and be none the wiser.

That would've been the prudent thing to do, so I'll assume they're still there.

That's the way the military works...

In all honesty though, I wouldn't doubt it if they did remove them a long time ago just due to the political climate of the host nation. Of my eight deployments, Turkey was by far the worst.

Putin looking more and more like a Nobel Peace Prize candidate. For all of the talk about Putin being the next Hitler, he held his fire after the Turks shot down a Russian plane that (allegedly) crossed into Turkish airspace and then shot the parachuting pilot on his way down.

I don't think Nobel peace prize winners should be barrel bombing civilian populations....

and yes Obama is no point of reference for what a Nobel peace prize winner should be.

Putin using barrel bombs? Lol! This is about as believable as Assad's barrel bombs and chemical attacks on his own people. About as believable as Sadaam's WMD's. About as believable as speratists in E Ukraine shooting down a passenger plane.

What is believable, is the fact that your president and his posse continue to arm the same terrorist(Al Queda) that supposedly knocked down the WTC's and killed 3,000 Americans. This is reality...

We overthrow dictators that stand in the way of our world dominance, but stand behind the ones helping us achieve such..

Epitome of amoral..

Very civilized of them...

Turkey to disband presidential guard unit over coup attempt - CNN.com

The roundup of suspected coup plotters is not the only government response to the uprising.

Under a new presidential decree following the attempted coup, suspects can be detained for as long as 30 days without charge and the government can listen in on all conversations they have with their lawyers.

A three-month state of emergency declaration issued Thursday grants President Recep Tayyip Erdogan new powers to implement the detention measures.

It is expected to be ratified by parliament, where his party holds the majority. Before the coup attempt, Turkey's detention period without charges was 24 hours, extendable to as long as four days.

Nothing like silencing the media in order to consolidate your power...

Turkish authorities ordered the closure of more than 130 media outlets on Wednesday in a crackdown following July’s failed coup, Reuters reports, citing CNN Turk. Some 1,600 military personnel were also sacked in the Turkish government’s latest move.

The Turkish government shutdown three news agencies, 23 radio stations, 16 TV channels, 45 newspapers, 15 magazines, and 29 publishers and distributors in their crackdown on the media. Turkey issues warrants for further 47 journalists as 15K detained over failed coup.

The army saw 1,684 soldiers discharged, according to the government decree cited by CNN Turk. The number includes 149 generals and admirals, amounting to nearly half of the high-ranking officers in the entire Turkish military, the Reuters reported.

So, freedom of speech is now a certainty in a country that houses the 2nd largest military in NATO...

Where are the US/western diplomats that renounce such in other lands?

POTUS has been curiously silent.
