Turns out, slavery is good ... for the slaves

Should we not highlight black agency? Should we only show black people as victims?

Enslavement doesn't become "agency" because you say they learned something lol, this is essentially the question version of the "this is technically true" devil's advocacy

If the standard was “write about skills slaves learned like how to farm”, I’d agree with you. But it’s not. It’s highlighting black men who took what they learned and rose above their situation.

Thus the “in some instances” part. So they’re not saying “focus on how plowing a field was an important skill”. But rather tell kids amazing stories like that of Robert Smalls who as a slave learned to sail and became the first black naval captain in the history of the US Navy.

The idea that they’re trying to teach “slavery good” is 100% ignorant, especially when you look at and read the actual standards.

Lol. Textbook intentionally obtuse response by the left. We learned the same thing in middle school about the slaves. Nobody I've ever known took that lesson to mean that slavery was a net positive for the enslaved. Such hysterical bull##it to get mad about this.

Isn't there a historical plaque in downtown Chattanooga about a former slave from Quitman, Georgia who used his blacksmithing skills to build a successful business in Chattanooga?

Don't recall anything in the text of the plaque extolling the virtues of slavery. Much like the curriculum in Florida.

Technically this is true. They learned skills that allowed them to become farmers/farm hands once they were freed. That worked out pretty well right up until the early 1960's when almost overnight they were replaced in the fields by Hispanics. Not sure what happened in the 60's to make so many people stop working..

Did they talk about slaves and modern athletic ability? Just curious...
If they hadn't been born into slavery they would have acquired life skills otherwise. It's putting lipstick on a pig to say that slavery helped prepare them for the job market.

It wouldn't have been their people that sold them. It would have been an enemy tribe or nation.

Last I heard they prefer to be called “African American“. If Africans (black people) sold them then it was absolutely their own people who sold them. Its really not debatable.

There are different nations in Africa, with their own languages, beliefs, and customs, like there are in Europe, Asia and the Americas. If the Danes sold some Poles to the Turks, would you say their own people sold them?

Black people sold black people as slaves in Africa. It’s not nearly as complicated as you want to make it out to be. The excuses you’re attempting to make are irrelevant.

Sorry if facts get in the way of what you want to be true. You might as well say that it was their own people since we're all human.

Facts? Like two rival tribes in Nigeria are somehow not the same people? I guess if a black gangbanger in Memphis kills a rival black gang member then they weren’t killed by a black person.
