tweets from Diamond's father

I've said for 2 years that Carter and Reynolds are the worst guards on the team and shouldn't be seeing the kind of minutes they are getting. I was hoping Cooper and Middleton would be better, but the fact is all 4 guards just flat out suck. Maybe Cooper sucks less than the others at this point, but she's still not much.

It's amazing just how bad that group is. They barely look like Div I caliber players.

+100000000000000 I've come to realize our guards just suck! Every time Carter dribbles, I cringe, cause I know she's dribbling aimlessly around the court, only looking to drive and make a complete or half circle around the court and throw it to someone else. She dribbles with no purpose at all. She's only good for hustle, mediocre defense, and an occasional offensive game, which only comes once every 18 games!

It's become comical between my friends and I how Reynolds would get the ball and dribble so fast down court, as if she's about to run a fast break, only to stop and set up a super slow offensive set that never works.

Tea is a freshman but the talent is there. I've been praying we get a good guard with her skill set. She'll grown....hopefully!

I'm thinking Geno or Muffet or some of the others would tell Daddy D to sit down and shut up. Then Darling Daughter would get much more bench time.

Irrelevant. #1, those issues existed for her way before she was coached by Holly. #2, any player that plays they way she does "because she is miserable about her coach" does not have the right attitude to be a high-caliber player that is part of a team with a winning culture.

And, to say she is on a team full of players that are not worthy of D1 scholarships shows your ignorance and I now regret that I even replied to your post.

This seems to me spot on. Here are some stats from the 2013-14 North Carolina team:

4 players (DD, Gray, McDaniel, Mavunga) averaged between 25 and 28 minutes, with DD. the highest. The number of shots (in order) that the 4 took over the season were 582, 362, 301, and 308. The shooting percentages (again, in order) were .426, .481, .472, and .523. DD averaged 18.0 pts./ game (Gray was next at 13.9) but took 220 more shots than anyone else to get there. She also shot .279 from beyond the 3-point line and led the team in turnovers: 122 vs. 55 for Gray, 85 for McDaniel, and 90 for Mavunga. So, whatever her state of mind, her performance hasn't varied a great deal from then to now.

Guards shooting this season.

Diamond 39 percent, Cooper 35 percent, Reynolds 36 percent, Carter 37.5 percent, Dunbar 39 percent, Middleton in limited play 41.5 percent.

So nobody has done the job so Diamond should get no more complaints than any other guard. She does have more turnovers because she does try to make something happen. If Mercedes could catch she would have about 30 less turnovers. She don't just dribble out the clock like the other guards.

I've stated repeatedly that Diamond, Bashaara and Mercedes are the only consistent players on the team.

I wouldn't just say that Diamond is miserable about playing for a crappy coach, but playing along (mostly) crappy teammates. She's wasted a year at Tennessee, and if she's smart, she'll look for her exit plan. Any sane player would do exactly that.

And yes, the guards suck. More often than not, they are the worst guards on the floor. Look at their numbers. They don't lie. They can't play.

People are all over Diamond, who is the best player on the team, but ignore the fact that the guards would not start for any Top 10 team, and wouldn't even make the rotation for most of them.

But yeah, Diamond's the problem.

I agree with only only one part of your Diatribe; Diamond needs to Transfer - again.

I agree with only only one part of your Diatribe; Diamond needs to Transfer - again.

I don't think that Diamond would want to sit out another year and switching schools again would not be conducive to her education (Student-athlete remember?).

She is a talented player who is struggling on a struggling team with a struggling coach (a combination of factors that is a proverbial perfect storm).

However, her presence on the team as a building block is one reason for optimism going forward. If she transferred it would be a huge blow to the program, not only in terms of the talent loss to the roster but also in terms if what it would signal about the program. Unlike some negavols, the team--as Diamond herself stated-- is sticking together and determined to work through these struggles. Maybe we should appreciate that attitude instead of firing off poisonous drive by opinions on fan boards.

OMG! this is REALLY BAD. To my knowledge, Delino DeShields is the first parent in the history of organized sport to complain that his child is not getting enough play time because he/she is really the BEST! Everyone should treat his tweet as the deathknell.

Sorry for being snide, but seriously of all the things to critique Holly on, this tweet has to be the least relevant.

Yeah, he is a former professional baseball player but that does not, as a matter of course, make him a basketball expert; He is first and foremost a parent who wants his kid to be the STAR!!.

And maybe he should not run to social media to publicize the sentiment. It puts his daughter and the entire team in a very awkward position.

Many on this board had proclaimed earlier in the season that if Holly were a good coach, she would bench Diamond for all the turnovers and forced shots. She essentially seems to have done that by removing her from the starting line-up and now this "recommended" move that any good would make is de facto evidence of how bad Holly is.

Look, there a lot of reasons to criticize Holly but her handling of Diamond is not one of them. The first two times Diamond came into the SC game; she immediately committed unforced turnovers. When she put together a good series of offensive plays in the 2nd half, she immediately committed a silly foul (her 3rd) and had to come out; that lost playing time was not Holly's fault but Diamond's for not being more disciplined and understanding the game situation (a fact that the announcers also noted).

I am a fan of Diamond and expect her to do some great things. However, she is not consistent at this point. For just about every positive play she makes, it is countered by a negative one.

Her Dad adding more pressure to her situation is not likely to help.

Don't really care what DD's father thinks.

Me either. I have seen how ugly it can get when parents who live vicariously thru their children let their frustrations overule their better judgement. I have seen coaches and officials attacked, hit, assaulted.

Delino and his daughter can meet with Holly and try to work out their differences. Maybe they already have. If that doesn't work and they're still not happy she can withdraw from school.

Otherwise he should keep his frustrations out of the public eye.

My 2 cents.

Kamiko Williams father was also critical. Instead of recognizing that he might have a point, she sat on the bench despite being one of the most talented players on the team.

Maybe not the best example. Williams by her own public admission played when she felt like it. She earned her bench time.

It's too late now. The damage has already been done. The best thing for UT, Diamond, and Delino is for Diamond to transfer to another school.

I personally hope Holly and her staff transfer to another school and Diamond stays. I think if that happens we'll see a lot more out of every player on the team.

How can Delino think his daughter is the best to put on the floor with her stats in turnovers, shooting percentage etc? I see another transfer coming

I watched the game last night. Diamond does not appear to be an All-SEC player at all. She made several mistakes. It appears there is little "basketball IQ" on this team. I don't say it is all coaching, but if not, the girls don't appear to be listening to Holly.

How about the 3 at the end of the first half with 10 sec. to go? Did Holly try to tell the kids to go for a last shot or did the girls do that on their own? Would that be a coaching mistake or a girl not listening to coach?

Holly's gonna have her hands full these next 3 weeks for sure!

I agree with everybody.
Holly isn't much of a coach.
Mr. DeShields is out of line.
DD appears to have a bad attitude and plays out of control a lot.

WOW…. How things turn so quickly..... DD’s dad is parent that has played at the highest level and understands the politics and what it takes to play at the highest level. For those who are questioning her heart, I do know this:

While she was at UNC she played all season with numerous injuries (broken finger, knee and leg issues) and managed to get a nod for the Naismith award as a Freshman. So what you are seeing is not about heart but about a bigger issue with this team as a whole. And I’m sure it has to do with personalities that Warlick and her staff can’t handle. The FoY and Naismith nominee as a Freshman was probably not very welcomed by those existing players here. And I don’t think Warlick and her staff got a hold of it and nipped it in the bud. Talent can play with talent. It’s a short time to figure out each other’s strengths and weaknesses and then it’s off to the races. But this is not the case with this team because “game is not recognizing game” here. Add to that, DD’s girl Te’a a Freshman PG coming who should have been starting as soon as she arrived, I can see how easily resentment towards DD and Te’a could build and divide the team. You can’t coach kids if they don’t like each other. That, and Warlick’s poor game management, is the only explanation one can draw as to why they stink.

Some have said on here that DD needs a coach to get her face like Geno or CPS. I don’t think that Warlick and her staff is doing that and it’s affecting the whole team not just DD. Because it’s not just DD that looks bad, they all do.

There were folks in Chapel Hill questioning Hatchell’s long-time assistant, Andrew Calder, with the same rhetoric as with Warlick while Hatchell was out dealing with Cancer. The talented freshman which included DD, got them deep into March based on their talent alone. The one thing that they did do well was run a baseline curl for DD with a double-screen that did work and let that talent play and run.

This Lady Vol offense is a lot of standing around the perimeter. NO flow or plays for any of the players. If Russell can get and hold position down low, throw her the ball. It's controlled chaos instead of letting them run and use their talent.

Russell was exposed last night and was repeatedly school by Wilson in the post and defended well when she was in the post herself. Her footwork needs work and their offensive philosophy is not helping her either.

This is a mess and the funny part about it, Jeff Walz, Geno, even Staley are probably scratching their heads at what is going on in Rocky Top. And contrary to what many believe about DD being a spoiled brat, she is not any more spoiled than Nared or any of the other players on that team. She's young and immensely talented like many other young women and men playing at this level. Who also pout and have bad body language too.

In case you forgot this team has had a problem of standing around and watching their best player for the last couple of seasons. first it was "lets stand around and watch Meighan" then it became Let's stand around and watch Izzy and Now its "Let's stand around and watch Diamond". that's the many problems that should have been fixed by the head coach but is not. turnovers were always a problem long before she even got here, defense has always been suspect and they never had any offense to begin with. they are known to always blow leads and let teams back in it. Holly's favorite thing to do is get it to the post no matter what and those always led to turnovers because they are a terrible passing team and at times you could see the turnover before it even happens. yesterday Coates had position and was clearly in front of Russell and there was no way Russell was going to catch that ball but Carter still tried to pass it to her and it was an easy turnover. also if i'm passing it to you and you're not paying attention then that's on you not me. everyone on the team should stay alert and be prepared for any pass. maybe if they were actually working on passing in practice these wouldn't be a problem. who knows if any of the current players would even want to come back, i'm sure all these recruits and their parents are watching, they're probably having doubts about coming here and playing for this staff.

I love everyone's passion on this topic, but there are right ways and wrong ways to handle frustration and I think this is a very big case of the wrong way. If you think I'm going to side with an angry parent calling out our coach in public over a coaching decision, and when I say coach I mean "person who has played, worked for, and represented Tennessee athletics to the world for two decades," then you are off your rocker. Doesn't matter how bad it might get - you do not go toe-to-toe with the coach in the open like that. I get that he's angry, I get that he thinks his daughter should be playing every minute, but you still take it to a phone or behind a closed door. You do not undermine the authority of the staff in public. Bad call. No matter how much I may be worried with UT's performance this year, I will back Warlick 100% on this one.

You are HOPING the team would improve with a new coach, because it it not assured.

Not hoping positive that the team would improve with the right coach. You can look at what coaches like Walz and others are doing with their teams and they have less talent to work with than Holly. It doesn't take a lot of thinking to believe that with more talent than they currently have they couldn't do as well or better with more talent.

There also seems to be a conversation going on between him and a couple of clueless Lady Vol fans who are critizing him for the tweets. His latest tweet: Delino DeShields ‏@DelinoDeShields
@cterrier100 @LadyVol_Hoops If you had a kid that was going through this u might think different ...

I'm almost tempted to sign up to The Summitt and post a thread with his tweets, but then I'd probably get booted off and they would delete the thread..

Don't waste your money, the orange tinted glasses crowd wont hear of anyone saying anything negative about Sister Holy :eek:lol: I was beaten up for posting about 3 things that Coach John Wooden said. The thing was, all three were what any coach needs to win. But they didn't like me quoting a coach that was willing to cheat by turning his head to illegal recruiting by a donor. The 3 needs to win were the point not that I thought John Wooden could walk on water.:bash:
