-link(Stats Perform) - Houston Baptist's record-setting quarterback Bailey Zappe entered the NCAA transfer portal on Monday, seeking to play a grad transfer season before he pursues an NFL career.
The 6-foot-2 Zappe has passed for 10,004 yards and 78 touchdowns in 37 career games, including four in the fall season, which did not count toward his final season of eligibility. HBU is not planning a spring season, unlike many other FCS schools.
Zappe (pronounced ZAP-ee) said, "the situation I'm looking at is I want to be the starter and I want to be in an offense that wants to sling the rock. As of right now, my choice is still use my extra year of eligibility and hopefully find a new home for one more year."
Zappe's short fall season was extraordinary: His school-record 567 passing yards at Texas Tech on Sept. 12 were the most ever by an FCS quarterback against an FBS school, and he went on to throw for 1,833 yards and 15 touchdowns with just one interception. He became the first FCS quarterback to have four straight 400-yard games since Idaho State's Justin Arias in 2014.
Zappe thanked HBU coaches and teammates in a social media post. Two of his top wide receivers, brothers Jerreth and Josh Sterns, also entered the transfer portal. Jerreth, a 5-8 junior, led the FCS with 105 receptions in 2019.
Per Austin Price - Tennessee "would love to land" this kid.
Said he talked to Walt Wells, who played against him and Wells said Zappe had moxie, was really impressive, did some trash talking. Said he should be a P5 quarterback.
