'20 TX RB Zachary Evans

This is pretty interesting. I wonder why we may have chosen not to bring him in. I know most people are going to say it is foolish to suggest that we would not want this guy, and I really wanted him to come, but this post by AP is pretty intriguing.

I'll give you one guess😉

I guess this is just the way it’s going to be from now on. I don’t care where kids go, but kids have to realize that taking the highest bidder immediately doesn’t maximize their worth. If they want generational wealth, they need to find a staff and place that will develop them on and off the field, so that there is an opportunity to make millions. I know it’s tempting to take $25k now to help the family, but that may be at a place that doesn’t set a kid up in 1-2-3 years to make a huge amount. It’s just short-sighted, and anyone saying otherwise is not helping the kid and getting a cut. I have no problem with kids getting paid now, but some don’t seem to be getting advised on the big picture.

I think this staff is doing a great job of factoring in culture when deciding on recruits. They don't want someone that thinks they're bigger than the program. They realize that bringing in someone that doesn't mesh can be devastating to the locker room regardless of his star rating. Could be a similar situation with Nolan.

The other day on one of the VQ podcast, Rob said some basketball players have came to visit and first thing they asked Barnes about was NIL $$. Barnes and other coaches never contacted those players again.

Might be the fact that we’re taking 2 RBs this cycle. Of course you kick the tires on a guy like this but, probably wasn’t a fit in this new staffs eye, imo.

Because he is a POS mercenary maybe?

Nothing wrong with wanting to cash in on your hard work but making it your sole focus or at least one of the main factors, is when it can become a problem.

I hesitated to post this because, since I am a Dawg fan you will doubt what I say, but welcome to the wild ride that is Evans’ recruitment. He is fantastic, and you guys would really score if you got him. However, get ready for months of the craziest recruitment that you have seen in years. Over the last few months, it has been a bizarre ride. Evans was suspended 3 games for fighting with a coach and suspended for the state championship for arguing with the head coach. His whims and attitude on where to go seem to change by the hour. His brother posts a ton and seems to be overly involved. Mom apparently wants him out of Texas due to very bad influences around him. He screws up and then repents. A succession of schools have wanted him, been seemingly about to lock him up, and then backed off in frustration. His test scores are also allegedly an issue.

I am certainly not bad-mouthing the kid. I do not know him. I just thought I would give you guys a heads up on what is to come for you. Anyway, good luck. Pruitt is a great coach. I am sorry we lost him. I hope you crush Mullen.

I don’t believe this. Danny White is a good, young AD with his whole family involved in college athletics. With a father at a big time basketball school and a brother at a big time competitor, you don’t think he knows the pulse of most high level colleges?

At UCF, White was the highest paid AD in the state. Going from 1.1 million to 1.8 million is not “generational wealth” or a “golden parachute.”

My guess is that he knew the brand and potential and wanted a P5 challenge at a higher salary. He truly can’t win national titles at UCF. He is somewhat akin to a young coach who is good enough to always find a head coaching job, if fired at the P5 level.

Agree with a lot of what you said here about his why but…

Contract is not a straight apples to apples 1.1 vs 1.8. It’s the 5% guaranteed annual increase plus the “up to $300K” in annual incentives. He will be on an escalating base over $2 mill after a few years.

He also has a rolling 5, meaning his contract automatically renews each year to a 5 year deal and UT will always owe him 4 years of salary upon separation, due immediately. That’s essentially over an $8 mill buyout minimum by the time this relationship has the chance to sour likely closer to $10 mill.

Not sure what type of coin you are pulling down or how you define generational wealth, but I could have all I ever want and leave a nibble for future grandchildren.
