Tyler Baron has entered the portal

But we’re talking CONVERSIONS and Okoye is further along in that class. And DEPTH at Leo is always needed. Harrison gone and Herring onboard.
Fair. I don’t think he should move to TE anyway, because of the reasons you mention. He’s not going to factor in next year either way because of the learning curve. I just don’t think the Baron situation would/should affect that decision. If that was the intent (move him to TE), I don’t see how Baron entering the portal rather than the draft as expected really makes a difference as it pertains to Bradley moving to TE or not.

I don’t know if the rumor was even true…but if it were? Losing a defensive end…anticipated or not…most likely quells it imo. Bodies add up.

Sounds like the rumor is bunk. Losing a DE to the portal that we were expecting to lose to the draft doesn’t change anything. He was gone either way.
Then we console ourselves that we had a fun moot conversation. Something that may have been a rumor was unaffected by something else or vice versa. 🤔

Obviously. We have to pay to play. Anyone who wants to be competitive has to. Just saying I hate the combination of the portal and NIL
The portal and NIL that brought us Hooker, Velus Jones, Cooper Mays, Bru McCoy, etc?

If you discount the Pruitt guys who probably had to leave to reduce our penalties, we've probably gained way more than we have lost from the system.

Didn’t they all come prior (except Bru) to NIL being available?? My point is the combo of the portal and NIL. College athletics free agency.

I'm not saying it's a good thing but like the crazy targeting rules or the new clock stopping rules or the rules treating QBs like fine china, you've got to learn to adapt as the game changes and the Vols have done very well in that aspect.

Just because we dislike NIL and the portal doesn't mean we need to just whine about it and ignore them like Dabo and watch our program suffer. And if we use the system well, expect the players to use it sometimes to their advantage.

We've done very well with both NIL and the portal. Spyre and UT have recruited well, Coach Heupel and staff have been reasonably aggressive in milking the portal, and overall UT is actually on the "upswing" since the new rules have developed.

Sure, NIL and the portal ARE destroying college football and guys like Baron may or may not be using the system for leverage for NIL, but here we are. The NCAA isn't in a position legally to fix either of those messes they created.

Neither the portal nor NIL are going to get better. The liberal transfer policy isn't changing because schools actually LIKE being able to immediately help their teams like we have done and NIL money being tossed around at Ohio State to keep Marvin Harrison Jr is said to rival NFL 1st round rookie money (around $20 million or so.)

NIL can't legally be capped or you can bet the big donors would've pressured the NCAA into capping it because it's going to cost them a bundle of money every year.

The portal is creating a LITTLE more parity as programs like TN, devastated by the Pruitt crap, can come back more quickly and a program like Liberty can, in some ways, rescue the career and life of a kid like Kaidon Salter.

For every Baron, there's a guy like Hendon Hooker who benefited greatly from the portal.

Agree with your points.

Who do we have to replace him?
Bailey, West, Jenkins, and Weathersby (who the staff was very high on) can all play SDE. If many of our DTs come back I think Omarr Norman-Lott could fill in this spot at times too. In some packages we will have combinations of other pass rushers (Pearce, Josephs, Herring, Bradley, Ross, etc...) at DE. Pursuing some portal DEs and JUCO DEs as well.

I don't think anyone expected Baron back anyway. Played his best ball this year and if he doesn't get a good NFL grade, he simply wants the market to give him a bigger annual NIL deal. Can't really blame him. UT may not be willing to pay him any more than he already receives given other obligations we have.

Volunteer club clawing for money and people paying them got me seriously questioning them. I’ve not seen hardly any recruit or player tout them, yet they put on extravagant tailgates and events frequently.. Yeah, 90% isn’t going to NIL, clearly….

That’s how I feel too. Millions getting put in but where is the results in the portal and recruits.

Yep exactly. Spyre has been our only game changer but people keep rushing to volunteer club when honestly I have no clue if they’ve even made an impact at all.
Proceeds shouldn’t be behind a curtain, it should be available to the fans so we see where our money stacks up against the rest of the country. Yet I can’t find a reliable website that gives this info.
