U.S. Navy Not Fit For War

Pilot Error is Blamed for Dramatic F-35 Stealth Fighter Jet Crash after failed 'show of force' move - which sent $115 MILLION Aircraft into South China Sea: Four Sailors aboard USS Carl Vinson injured and pilot barred from flying

A catastrophic fighter jet crash aboard a U.S. aircraft carrier was caused when the bungling pilot attempted a 'show of force' maneuver which went disastrously wrong, a Navy investigation has found.

The incident happened on January 24 last year when a F-35C worth $115 million smashed into the USS Carl Vinson during operations in the South China Sea.

The pilot, who is still a serving Navy officer but not longer has 'flying status', ejected before the plane collided with the runway, causing millions of dollars in damage to the aircraft carrier and at least one other plane. The F-35C tumbled into the ocean and was recovered months later from a depth of 12,400 feet.

A photo also emerged of the jet after it fell into the South China Sea. It sank to a depth of about 12,400ft and was recovered several weeks later

Amazing they could recover it from 12K

Arre you kidding. You need to read about the Glomar Explorer that Howard Hughes built for the CIA in the 60's, the freaking 60's, and they almost successfully raised an entire Russian sub from depths greater than that off Hawaii. Unfortunately the "cradle" failed and the sub broke in half with part of it falling back to the ocean floor. We were after their codes. They did recover some remains and did a burial at sea with full military honors which was filmed with the tapes being given to the Russians several decades later.

As it broke apart they observed the nuclear missiles slide out of their silos (4 of them I think) and start rapidly descending to the ocean floor. It's the 60's and we have zero knowledge of their nuke safety so for multiple minutes the guys on the ship waited to see if the missiles would explode on contact killing them and taking out a chunk of Hawaii.

I think the Glomar Explorer is still maintained as an active ship even though it's never been used again. Don't know that for sure.
