UCF National Championship Parade

For those that are mad at what UCF is doing and claiming a national title....here is a refresher for how Bama got to 12

Got 12? Here's how Alabama bumped up its claim to a dozen national titles | AL.com

I genuinely don't care what UCF does or doesn't claim (and I honestly respect the fact that they are paying their coaches' NC bonuses). But there is a difference between UCF just declaring themselves champs and what Bama and every other school claim: someone actually awarded a title for them to claim.

Tennessee claims six national championships.

The following is a list of the six national championships listed by the Vols. Only two (1951 and 1998) were recognized by major polls.

The Associated Press has only acknowledged Tennessee as National Champions twice, but the #1 Vols lost in the Sugar Bowl in 1951 after being named AP and UPI National Champions due to the polls being conducted before the bowl season prior to 1968 and 1974 respectively.

The 1938 and 1950 championships, while not AP titles, were recognized by a majority and a plurality of overall selectors/polls, respectively.

1930 - Park Davis retroactively awarded Alabama a share in the national championship in his analysis for Spalding's Football Guide in 1934. The contemporary Dickenson, Dunkel and Houlgate rankings gave Notre Dame, also 10-0, the championship. The Fighting Irish are recognized as champions in the NCAA record book.

1941 - The only selector giving Alabama the title that year was Deke Houlgate's retroactive system.

1964 - Organizations crediting Alabama with the championship included the Associated Press, United Press International, and Litkenhous. Because of the controversy, the AP decided to wait until after the bowl games to select their champion in the 1965 season. Arkansas and Notre Dame were also credited with the championship that year, although Notre Dame does include it as one of their 11 claimed championships.

So I say, let them have their fun.

That's why Auburn fans are screaming for Malzahn's head this week...it's the job. Kiffin did the same thing here...flat, didn't want to be there.

If the P5 aren't going to let those teams in the playoffs then they should go back to a 10 game regular season, 8 conference games with 2 games from other P5 schools and expand the playoff. Conference champs and some at large bids.

Stidham and the AU Oline lost that game not Malzahn

well, I'm basing my post on the calls from Auburn fans to the Finebaum show, they didn't say anything about the fella you mentioned. They sure as hell was mad at the HC.

I don't care one way or the other. Them boys from UCF was fired up, ready to play and whooped some ass.

yeah the HC always gets the heat

Yeah, imagine this...

2 teams play in a bowl game, one of the teams runs the ball 31 times for a total of 5 yards and a TD (4yds)...

They lose of course, by 17 points none the less.

The head coach decides to leave soon after... and people burn mattresses...Because they are angry he's leaving.

Offensive genius Lane Kiffin after the bowl game versus Va. Tech.

So UCF is claiming a national championship! Seeing as how I live in North GA and am surrounded by obnoxious UGA fans and arrogant Bammers I would love nothing more than to display a UCF national Championship hat around the office. Can someone make one? on a side note I wish that The winner of the Championship game would accept an exhibition game with UCF, put the title on the line too!!

I think that's across all of their campuses. Not just in Orlando.
From their Wiki page.
The University of Central Florida, or UCF, is an American public university in Orlando, Florida. It is the largest university in the United States by undergraduate enrollment, as well as the largest by enrollment at a single campus.

In the history of the G5 schools getting into BCS/NY6 bowls, they have won more often than not.

You could look at that and assume that the G5 schools are every bit as good as the Power 5. Or, you could look at it and acknowledge that they are typically playing a team that just missed out on a title and isn't terribly motivated. It's all hypothetical, of course.

They also enter those games after playing a regular season where, let's face it, the G5 teams get to coast through a ton of games and occasionally get tested.

Even in a year where they had a weak schedule, Alabama played several games where they couldn't sleepwalk and win. FSU, A&M, LSU, Auburn. UCF did not even play a remotely close game until week 8 (Navy), and really were not even tested by another good team until their season finale (South Florida).

I know that both teams get a month off, but Auburn had to play UCF after playing Clemson, Miss St, LSU, Georgia twice, and Alabama. If UCF played Auburn or Alabama's schedule, they likely would have lost a couple of games.

It was a totally different mindset back then. The NC wasn't nearly as big of a deal back then as it is now. Beating your rivals and winning your conference is what people mostly cared about. Being voted #1 was great and all, but it was just water cooler talk. There were many years where there were multiplie champions.

The mindset started to change after the implementation of the seccg, when the networks realized what a money grab these championship games really are. The Bowl Alliance was the first attempt at guaranteeing a 1 vs 2 matchup. To be honest my passion for college football was far greater back then than it is now.

Yep. Bo Schembechler often referred to it as the "mythical national championship." Winning the Big 10 and going to the Rose Bowl meant everything to him and thought that you couldn't really crown a national title in college football.

Of course, that could have been a self-serving opinion, because he never won one.

Don’t have a problem with it. Playoff at 4 teams will never give a lower school a chance to win the natty. So why not have fun and celebrate your great season. Kudos to them.

This.

It's okay for the big boys to claim bogus national titles, but not the so-called little guys...double standard.

UCF hanging a banner in their stadium doesn't affect my life one way or the other. Good for them I say.

Not that it matters that much, 17+ years removed and all, but last time Alabama played UCF, Alabama lost. :)

The big boys claiming them is silly too, but that was mostly over 40 years ago, back when they didn't or couldn't even match up 1 and 2 in a bowl game, and they even voted before the bowl games.

Doing it now, yeah it doesn't affect anyone's life, but it's pretty silly. It's like if Tulane claimed one in 1998 or Boise St. claimed one in 2006 and 2009.

It's kind of like a fart in church. Everyone's going to talk about it, and it gets a lot of attention, but in the end...everyone knows it's just a case of loud, hot air at the wrong time.

Go Vols.

That suggestion is dead on arrival. The G5 schools have to get their paycheck games with the Power 5 or they won't be able to afford to keep playing.

Are you still expecting schools to play 12 regular season games AND a 4 or 5 round playoff?

Every other division of football can do it but the "big boys" can't?
