Let me put it this way, UCF's claim to the national championship is at least as strong as about a third of the 16 that Alabama currently claims. Let em claim it.

And as many have already mentioned there are plenty of teams guilty of "claiming" a national title. So what's one more?

I still don't get how BYU won a national title in 1984. If we didn't have a CFP, I'm almost certain that somebody would have recognized UCF as champs.

BYU played 1 ranked team, when the game was played. They opened at #3 Pitt, who ended up being 3-7-1.

1984 was a sad year for NCAA football.

This isnt even the best finish they have had in a post season AP poll. Ucf has had a bunch of talent come through there, they have top 25 finishes and even top 10 pre-Frost. The rankings this season are muddied up mostly because of Auburn and it hurts Ucf. Which is ironic considering they beat Auburn.

You don't think if 8 teams were involved the rankings would be different? Sure they would.

No, they would not beat out Ohio st, Wisconsin, USC, or Penn St. Those all played a solid schedule and won major games.

Fulmer’s provided a steady hand since then, but the combination of Currie’s ineptness and what Schiano was accused of was indeed embarrassing...much more embarrassing than UCF calling themselves national champs.

I was puling for them the whole way, who doesn't love an underdog.

However they did not deserve to be in the CFP. With that I would like to see them #3 in the final poll.
I suspect they'll be 4, probably 5.

They will never, I repeat never see that type of success again.
Once if a lifetime, enjoy it. It will be a great story to retell the the grand kids every year

You do realize they were 12-1 3 years ago and have played in 2 Fiesta Bowls in the last 10 years, right?

Nope. They were ranked 12th by the committee.

If an 8 team CFP playoff existed, there is no scenario where a G5 school is excluded. Otherwise, I believe there would be a major lawsuit filed by the non P5 schools. So yes, they would have been in the playoff.
