UGA Coach Rodney Garner To Remain With Bulldogs

There are plenty of people left to choose from so I am not going to get all worked up over it. If nothing else CLK created controversy on their staff, and their fans will be needing to mend some fences for all the negative talk they created from it. The lesson for us to learn is to stop getting pumped up over these coaches and wait for things to get finalized and official. The coaching vacancies will get filled sooner then later and we can then move forward.

Well this one just got weirder...I'm not really sure why he didn't come to UT.

Per Hubbs:

Basically, Rodney stayed because of Richt. We offered more money and Georgia did NOT match it. He was offered a position on the offensive side of the ball Saturday and did not want to go to that side of the ball. Monte went down there yesterday and tried to pitch the idea of him on the defensive side of the ball. Rodney basically said no I don't want you all to try and alter any plans the program had because he didn't want to effect any chemistry the staff already had.

This came straight from Rodney

I am not sure why they would not hire him as a LB coach. I am not sure what plans Monte has since Jimmy Lake, Darren Perry, and others decided to stay in the NFL. Where would he fit into the offensive side of the ball anyway? We already have two OL coaches on board, in Chaney and Cregg.

but your manager's / boss' job is to pay you as little as possible in keeping you as productive as possible. Why would they go out of their way to pay you more unless they had good reason?

I've got no problem with that. Just so they realize that when a better offer comes along, a match or even slightly better counteroffer is not going to cut it. I've been on both sides so I fully understand.

I don't see why that's weird ukdave.
UGA didn't even counter offer at all, they couldn't match it. The fact that he came to Lane and said I want to talk about coming back here and then decided against it because of team chemistry reeks of bs.

Maybe Richt dangled the HCIW carrot in front of him. Can we charge him for all the gas we wasted flying back and forth from Knoxville and Athens?

I agree. I've been in positions where I've gone to my boss to say that I think I'm worth more $'s without any counteroffer just to give them a chance to pay me what I thought I was worth. You shouldn't have to have a counteroffer in hand to get more if your employer really thinks you are valuable. Luckily for me, I'm no longer in the position to ask anyone for more $'s.

It just said that they did not "match" what we offered. He most likely got a raise, just not to what we offered.

That sounds to me like the wife/family had more to do with it than the money.

In all honesty, uprooting that many kids would be tough.

Something isn't being said here. If you cared about the family you wouldn't be shopping yourself around the SEC as much as Rodney has. I do believe his wife/family was the #1 reason for not coming back to UT, whether he wants to say it or not. We offered him $400,000 and Georgia couldn't match it at all.

That is weird.. Doesn't make any sense... If he didn't get more money.. and we told him he could be on defense.... I don't get it..

We have better recruiters on staff anyway.

I don't think anyone out there can equal Rodney. IMO, he is the best in the South and college football. This would have been a GIGANTIC pickup but if he doesn't want to come he doesn't want to come.

The credit here goes to Coach Kiffin for trying to make this hire. I like what he is doing.

Gonzales, great recruiter at Florida. Question is - wouldn't almost any recruiter worth his salt would clean up down there? Look at Spurrier. Everyone thought he could sure bring in the talent. Well, he hasn't as South Carolina which tells me the Florida high school players want to stay at home. This makes me wonder how good Gonzales really is - if we even go after him.

Yes, they COULD match it. UGA obviously didn't have to.

So, if the entire SEC has as much access to the ESPN money as we do - why is it that our AD has opened the purse strings, but others haven't? Is there something about our structure that has allowed him to do that and they haven't? Is it that we have been able to restructure our entire coaching salaries as part of the changeover and they are locked into "outdated" salaries....and are reluctant to give everyone huge raises without feeling like they are getting more? If Auburn tries to pull what we are doing, they may have to start acting sooner than later you would think.

Garner played UT for a big raise. In return, Kiffin needs to run up the score a few times against GA.

He is comfortable in Athens, and so is the family.

He wasn't necessarily shopping...just saying before he makes a decision the whole family will be brought into play.

And they didn't agree on UT...simple as that.

I doubt Gonzoles would end up here in Knoxville. I see him maybe going to Miss St. with Mullen

RG will die in Athens and that will be his choice. Wife played it to the hilt. He didn't want it bad enough. He will move on his next offer if he gets one, however they will be very limited in the future. Best of Luck but he would have been a good fit here but I got the feeling his wife did not want to move and Atlanta has more to offer her and 5 kids.

Garner will leave soon for a DC or HC job somewhere anyway. Gonzo will probably stay at Florida unless we pay some money. Not sure he is worth it.
