UNC and Duke Basketball, 2015-16

How glorious! I said that this wasn't going to be the deal some thought it would be, although I thought we might face a one year postseason ban at most. Didn't even get that. Hehehe! I bet spank is weeping somewhere. He really seemed to have a lot riding on UNC basketball sanctions. Poor guy.

This makes me wish we had won the title this past season even more now. What a giant middle finger to the rest of the nation that would have been! Although I'll gladly settle for no sanctions.

This scandal always struck me as something akin to Obamacare. Everyone was an expert and had an opinion, yet very few actually knew all the details. I have no doubt that there were some associated with the basketball program that steered basketball players to these classes (which was the reason why I thought we might face a one year ban), but if you ever actually read the details of the case, it's clear it was more an institutional matter than an athletics one.

Even so, I'm sure being UNC didn't hurt. But before any of ye fans of other blue bloods cry foul, just remember that you too will skate, when your time inevitably comes. It's just what we do nowadays. We're like the big investment banks: too big to fail. Sure, it's unfair, but when has that ever stopped anyone? So don't be too down about this. It just confirms that you'll skate too when you come before the NCAA.

Your statement duke will when every time we step on the court don't you guys get tired of being a Vol football fan and a duke ,unc or Kentucky fan.I see so many people who live in Campbell and Claiborne and Grainger counties that claim to be Vol fans in football but in basketball they wear ky or unc hats and duke badketball shirts.I have been a fan of other teams to a point back 30 years ago but I always thought it was wrong to be a Tennessee fan in football cause they are normally a good team and you asall are fans of those others in basketball because they win.I don't think it's much better than those bandwagon fans who every time a team wins superbowl they have thousands of fans show up and claim they been a fan for life then same thing the next year with a different team.be all Vol

I am a UNC fan, because I was born in North Carolina and spent the first 22 years of my life there. I am a UT fan, because I received graduate degrees from the institution and taught there for a decade.

Admittedly, what I care most about is UNC basketball and UT football, while UNC football and UT basketball account for relatively little in my sports life. I do, however, pull for all of them. It's just that UNC basketball is the big deal in North Carolina and was the greatest thing in my childhood fan life, while UT football is the big deal in Tennessee and dominated my time spent in Knoxville. It's just human nature to care most intensely about the things that consume the most energy of our communities.

If I had to swear by just one for the rest of my life though, it would be UT, as I committed much blood, sweat, and tears to the university and also care more deeply for UT football than UNC basketball as a result.

Some may not care for this or understand it, but it makes perfect sense to me. Both are an important part of my life - my past, present, and future. Asking me to do away with one is essentially asking me to rid myself of part of my history.

I expected your post about 18 hours ago.

Poor Silvia and the women's basketball team fall on the proverbial sword.

Who's crying? Just made a joke about UNC reloading. There is no possible way you guys will be close to this years team next season, especially if Jackson decides to stay in.

If everyone returns.... That was in the post. Not saying they will be as good, just that they will be should be a solid top 10-15 team.

I thought the whole time UNC was just aiming for a title, knowing this was the year they could do it. Then they would get punished after they decline a bit. UNC has to be giddy that it appears now the program might away scott free. But at least there was some semblance of karma in the end lol.

It's just interesting to how the NOA's have changed in the year since it came out. UNC reports violations in other sports, and gets the attention off it's premier programs . The athletic programs in general will get an easier sentence, because in the end like you said, it appears the issue was school wide, not just athletic. But it's just funny to me how the fact that the misbehavior was schoolwide, has become a reason you can't punish the athletics at UNC. I understand it, just funny to me.

Of course it's helpful to be a blue blood. But this seems to be the most blatant example of the NCAA letting an elite program off the hook. Like I said before, the excuse that "Well the cheating happened in X amount of other athletic programs and even regular students too...so you can't punish the basketball team" is just funny. Now all of a sudden womens basketball has been singled out? Good stuff.

Might makes right. Happens the entire world over. UNC is no exception.

So you are acknowledging that UNC is no different than any other institution and in no way morally, socially, sure as hell not academically superior as so arrogantly suggested by pretty much all of their fans for years?

And are you also conceding that the term "Carolina Way" is a bunch of bull**** and the term should no longer be used in a positive way?

I haven't used the term "Carolina Way" in years. It used to mean something, but there's no innocence in the majority of college athletics anymore. There's too much money riding on the success of these programs and the backs of the athlete-students to allow for innocence. It's win at all costs or they'll find someone else that will. Dean Smith would be ashamed.

Sure, I am.

Never claimed we were anything special in that regard, as far as I can remember.

This almost exactly characterizes myself as a fan. Born and lived in NC till I was 14, then moved to Chattanooga. I keep up with UT basketball more than you, it seems, but barely follow NC football. And, like you, if I were forced to choose just one, it would be UT football.

What's curious to me is why anybody gives a dam() who we are fans of outside of our love for UT.

It's just a natural question. When I wear UT shirts around, people always tease me about or I'll get the occasional question. It's like people view fandom as a club, and some question the ability to cheer two different "clubs" simultaneously.

The Wolfpeckerheads are currently going apey. Looks like they're going to lose yet another player to transfer.

Who could have foreseen that hiring the guy who screws his only players' girlfriends could ever go awry.

It will be even more awesome once it's revealed that they've had "paper classes" there all the while as well.

Cat Barber most likely would have gone to UNC, yet we didn't touch his rear with a 10 foot pole. Anyone wonder why? We probably could have won the title with him this year, despite a position overload, which has never bothered Alabama football.

I agree with you though, Gottfried and State are thoroughly irrelevant.

Cat Barber would've killed it in Roy's system.

Some people in this thread are jumping to conclusions about UNC getting off 'scott free' because of that amendment to the notice of allegations. They still are facing the most serious charge of lack of institutional control. The only 2 things that changed are that men's basketball and football are no longer listed as the primary beneficiaries of Deborah Crowder's organized and long standing academic fraud and they are no longer referring to her acts of fraud as improper benefits (which they still are for Jan Boxill's actions for the women's bball team). I understand the cynicism and the NCAA is unpredictable but I don't think UNC athletics are getting off as easy as some of you think.

Well said my friend, almost same boat here.
