Unemployment Benefits

No.

Jobs are out there. I saw an anecdote awhile back that illustrates the problem. A guy was offered a job but turned it down to stay on unemployment. The job was at a lower level and pay than what he had before. He had the luxury of turning down a job that would have turned him into a contributor rather than a dependent. The time extensions that have been added to unemployment have damaged the recovery by squelching re-employment momentum.

Which is my point, the program in itself is not the problem. It is how it is run and the lack of accountability for it that is the problem.

When is it not possible?

I was cut by a company having major cash flow problems right after 9/11. I moved 900 miles AND took a lower level position to get re-started.

Your situation and circumstances could be very different from the next person.

One of my friends was working as a programmer and was laid off when his company outsourced their coding to India. (Side-note, the quality of products delivered fell dramatically and the company went bankrupt less than a year later).

Well, he sucked up his pride and worked at a security system call center. He had to lie about having a degree as most low-level jobs won't hire college grads due to knowing they won't stay on long. Well, he held out and over time studied up on networking and now works for an ISP.

Long story short he had too much pride to collect unemployment even while he was retraining himself for a (slight) career shift and searching for a new job.

Yeah, imagine the large market for people with PhDs in Systems Engineering and have all of their work experience designing and refining the shuttle's life support systems.

I know everyone hates people who collect unemployment, but hear me. I was laid off from a construction foreman job that has given me anywhere from 65-85k a year depending on workload, since I left the Army in 2003. I haven't worked since Labor Day, and can't get a job at the Home ****ing Depot. It's that bad.

So I collect my $537 a week, which keeps the mortgage paid, lights on, and oil tank somewhat filled. Don't feel bad for me, but walk a ****ing mile in my shoes before you piss and moan.

Stopping unemployment benefits will not solve the problem.

Those that choose not to work will then have zero income which may qualify them for several government programs such as food stamps, housing, medicaid, families first, etc.

i don't think anyone hates people who collects unemployment. most people have been there. I think that many people get frustrated with those who milk the system, and many people do.

I agree with the bolded part 100% but not with the first part. Many people hate unemployment benefits until they are forced to draw on it themselves.

how many positions have you applied for? What are the requirements for keeping the checks coming?

yeah. Easy to do at the drop of a hat. Getting the house set to sell and moving back to the farm is a start, before you start auditing my expenses.

this is kind of my point here. your unemployment benefits are allowing you the option of not doing anything. i'm not saying it doesn't suck, or that unemployment is some great amount of money, or that i don't feel for you. all i'm saying is that if your unemployment benefits ran out you might be forced to make the hard decisions and one of those might be moving and finding work wherever you can. my $.02.

Yes they are... but not to the degree that the rule does not stand. If you are willing to work right now you can find work.

For instance, we are trying to move right now and need to do some home repairs on both ends. We can't find contractors in either place. Construction guys are hurting in ATL and FL I know. I know someone who is... but he is unwilling to leave GA. That is his prerogative... but the rest of us should not be paying him for it.

God bless you, sir. I hope you find something very soon. You are not a bad person. Regardless of the opinions here, jobs are hard to come by in this economy. Too many people are very quick to call the unemployed lazy, unadaptable, unchangeable, etc. There are no simple answers in many cases such as a move or industry change. I really wonder how those that are condemning and so sure of what they would do (they KNOW they could find a job somewhere) if they lost their job. Remember folks before you spout off that you have all the answers, "but by the grace of God, there go I."

Once again JTrain, good luck and keep fighting. :salute:

I would say fortunate. Do you have no compassion/empathy? I know people scam the system. I'm not naive, but there is a bunch of hard-working decent people that are the victims of others' decisions.

Droski, I like you. I enjoy chatting with you. However, your lack of understanding and unwillingness to see things from any other perspective other than your own, is not your most redeeming qualities.
