Where do you think the traditions came from? Orange and white was selected by students. Smokey the mascot came about in the 50's. Vol Walk came in the 80's (borrowed from Auburn). Rocky Top started in the 70's (we students THEN hated it. It was for blue hair donors. I can't imagine not having it now). Checkerboard end zones were not always there, nor was the block T - thank Doug Dickey. The point is traditions happen and evolve over time. Every generation of students adds a layer.

Very true. They all have two colors in common, Orange and White. Not orange and gray or white, orange and gray. Just Orange and White. They all symbolize the core traditions based on those two colors.

We should only play John Phillips Sousa marches. It's college football - no bluegrass tunes. We should wear unadorned helmets as they did in the 30's and 40's - a stripe only if it is not gaudy. No costume mascots or animals - Volunteers are early 19th century frontier soldiers, not hound dogs. We should sit quietly and respectfully during games wearing suits and proper hats. We should only run a single wing offense just as the General did. ...

The team should wear blue font.
Or we could just go the Oregon route, forget our core, change our colors to suite the latest going fad or color of the week and cater to a bunch of adolescents that are drawn to shiny new things.

Amen. Dickey's name should ever be removed from Vol lore for putting those giant gaudy Ts on our helmets!

Yeah, those Orange "T's" even the thinner ones, were on a WHITE helmet. All of the additions that have become a part of our traditions center around Orange and White. Try again.

It certainly did not help them. They lost two NC games since letting Nike expanded their wardrobe.

No one is advocating abandoning the core, but it's those "adolescents you are watching on Saturdays. Tastes evolve and differ. I prefer 70's-80's Rock, nice suits, fitted hats and Sci-Fi. My teenage son likes rap, skater clothes, snap backs and horror movies. Recruiting has to address those generational differences and build on tradition.

I think he was being facetious and was saying he liked the Dickey power T. They actually have worn black and orange helmets too.

I'll be honest, I love the traditional uni's including orange at home and our storm troopers on the road. I did also like the Nike smokey gray's...

However, that being said, we can wear pink Saturday for all I care so long as we win.

Go Vols and beat Bama!

We can wear our home uniforms at Tuscaloosa without Alabama's permission. We must, however, be prepared to accept the consequences of being penalized 15 yards at the beginning of each half for doing so. Personally, I look forward to the day when Butch has built sufficient talent and depth that he is willing to honor that older, pre-television tradition of Tennessee and Alabama taking the field in orange and crimson jerseys, respectively. The requirement for the visiting team to wear white jerseys made perfect sense in the era of black and white television, but it is woefully antiquated now and should be repealed. Until such time as it is, it would be a huge vote of confidence for Butch to say to our team, "This is the great Southern Classic and, as such, Tennessee boys were meant to go into battle dressed in orange. We don't care about any 15-yard penalty."

I like the idea of building on our traditions, keep the storm troopers, gray once or twice a year, but only for away games, I think orange at home. We need to figure out an orange away jersey.

Except the tone of smokey gray is an official school color. When did it come about? I personally don't know the incorporation date of it but I venture to say it was long before Butch Jones arrived.

It is a color added recently. The daisy growing on the hill was not gray. It was not on the palette in 2009 when we had the debate over the black jerseys. I am pretty sure it came with Butch.

Why are so many people hell bent on destroying tradition? I don't don't get it.

Because you can't...if a tradition can be destroyed by wearing an alternate? It's a piss poor tradition! :aggressive:

It was nice to see the Smokey Greys again, but call me old fashion I really want to see our Orange & White on the road or inside Neyland. I loved it when they broke out the Orange pants with the white tops on the road. I would love to see the all Orange uniforms at home again.
