Looking at the uniforms from over the years, Im not sure what throwback they would be able to do without going with the black. Mashup 1903 and 1914 and you get something akin to the Michigan combo.
And if I can get into the weeds for a moment...
Smokey, our adored team mascot, is a bluetick coonhound. Not, as you could wrongly surmise, a black and tan coonhound. I bring that up because, in the early part of the 20th century, the team used black and tan uniforms. Every time I see that old picture of the uniforms through the years I think of that.
I'd think a grey uni with orange numbers would look nice.
Too bad it's not the players who foot the bill for buying abominations like that, or anything else related to the football program for that matter. If they did, then perhaps they would deserve more of a say with regards to gameday attire.
Regardless of how I feel about whatever alts could result, I tend to think the players have a whole hell of a lot of sweat equity built up in discussions about what they'll wear. Certainly more than I do as an alum that buys some junk at the bookstore or Pennys and donates my pittance for tickets.
They shouldn't be the final say, but I don't have a problem with special unis being a carrot on a stick for the players...
I'm not saying the average fan deserves much if any say. However, the big time boosters, as well as the AD who are essentially tasked with being the caretakers of the program should have the final say. To me, the players should just be happy that they have the privilege of putting on the same jerseys as the generations that came before them as opposed to trying to tear down decades worth of tradition by wearing these newfangled attention whoring uniforms. Just my opinion, I know a lot of people don't feel the same.
I feel the same, but I think an alternate is inevitable, and as long as it isn't as butt ugly as almost all of the stuff people post here, especially most of the UT mockups, I won't be too mad.

Subtle stylistic change has always been part of Tennessee tradition. The thing that boggles my orange-saturated mind is that we already have one of the most distinctive color schemes in all of college football, and it is entirely due to that uniquely brilliant shade of orange. If this craze for alternative uniforms is motivated by a desire to express individuality, it is difficult to set yourself apart from the proverbial crowd more than to wear Tennessee orange. Nevertheless, most fan-inspired alternative uniforms posted in the 11,500+ contributions to this thread and its predecessor seek to minimize the use of that color. These mockups certainly are not an improvement, stylistically, on what we are currently wearing. The one change I can categorically endorse as part of an alternative uniform or, for that matter, as part of our standard road uniform would be the use of orange helmets with a white power T and stripe. I have a feeling, however, that such a notion would not meet with the approval of strident advocates of alternative uniforms, any more than our use of orange road pants.
i just dont think its that big a deal. the game will still be played. it will still be 4 qtrs. we will win or lose. alternate uniforms are a sign of the times now. the kids that play love them. just enjoy Vols football and not worry about things that are out of our control.Subtle stylistic change has always been part of Tennessee tradition. Here are Nebraska's new 2013 Alternate Uni's....

I think they look pretty good
They're black. I don't understand how this is inspired or new or cutting edge, it's basically a black version of their regular uniform.
I get the alternate uniform talk, but for the life of me I can't understand why so many teams are getting a black jersey. How can it be cool or unique when about half the teams in FBS at least have done the same freakin' thing?
