Uniform/Helmet/Shoe design thread (merged)

Butch has stated, on more than one occasion, that you can walk in any high school in the country, clad in Tennessee orange, and they will know instantly who you represent. As much as he has emphasized Tennessee tradition, and as calculated as every move he has made thus far, my gut tells me he will not authorize a radical overhaul of our uniforms. Let us hope that reference to the term "script" was a poor word choice. If, as CagleMtnVol suggests, the finished product looks like what he has depicted in post no. 1474, that would be far more attractive than a cursive script which we see frequently on baseball uniforms but rarely on football jerseys.

ive always found it funny that the "traditionalists" that hate any and all black on the uniform want us to go back to black cleats. these additions are a subtle look that shouldn't make you get mad unless you're looking for something to get mad at. now lets all throw on our orange shades and enjoy the good times were having!:td:

The fact is butch strongly believes in tradition and was not very pro on the alternative jerseys even though he did it at Cincinnati... except for the minor changes announced yesterday but the played have urged him and he feels they will get great motivation out of it so you will see the alternatives for Oregon and georgia

Thought I would leave the here...

TRADITIONAL

Adjective

-Existing in or as part of a tradition; long-established.

I'm starting to think the people clamoring over tradition don't even know what Tennessee's tradition is.

We've been losing for close to a decade now... Howabout we fire Jones, rehire Dooley, and just call it a tradition!

After all, if we have been doing it for a while, it is a timeless tradition that we must protect with our lives.

7th place in the East! Let's go!

Stupid post. I guess you forget how our best years under Fulmer we had literally 2 uniforms; he even got rid of the orange pants for all but 3 games he coached.

+1. I said the other day that Jones hadn't set a foot wrong since arriving in Knoxville, and that streak lasted for about 4 more days. To me, the complete overhaul of the away uniforms plus alternates in TWO games is an embarrassment. At least we'll get to enjoy the traditional look for 6 of the 12 games. I'm afraid the is just the first in a series if steps that sees us toss our long time, easily identifiable aesthetic brand out the window for good.

You complain more than my 3 yr old. Good God, lets see the uniforms before you have a complete meltdown.

The state is going on the back collar above the players names, and I've said multiple times that I think that is a nice addition. What I'm against is filling up any unused real estate in the front of the jersey with a script "Tennessee". I just think its going to be too much and that script font is better served on baseball jerseys.

I don't think "script" means what you think it means.

I'm generally on your side on this, but I think you're really overreacting. Calling the the changes to the white jerseys a "complete overhaul" is really overkill. My guess is in action they'll look almost exactly like the old ones.

DP has already said the home orange alternate is pretty much the same as the regular home orange, and that the change will pretty much be undetectable by most fans.

The gray jerseys are definitely different, but at least they aren't just going to the black jersey well again. It might look nice. If it sucks and most of us hate it, then it will likely never be seen again.

My point exactly. The concept of tradition seems to elude you, and many others.

Kiffin won once with Black Jerseys, call it a "tradition" and wear them every game. After all, we won with them.

That is essentially what you are getting at.

Aside from the fact that they had success with those jerseys, what makes them different from the uniforms we had before Fulmer?

Seriously?!?!? It's really not that big of a change. And why not an alternate uni once or twice for the players. Its really not about you or any of us at all. One of the alternates is probable an all orange uni or something like that. It will be ok.

I don't think we're the ones who don't get what tradition is. Part of your definition was "long established", so after one game you can't call Kiffin's black jerseys "tradition".

The uniforms we had before Fulmer, for about 30-40 years, were essentially the same.

And the new ones will essentially be the same as well. There are minor changes to the uniforms often. I would consider what is described to be nothing more.

So we've got minor tweaks to the home uniform, a complete overhaul of the away uniform and alternates for TWO games? I've said a lot of negative stuff about Derek Dooley, but I'll give him credit in this regard; at least he was dedicated to upholding UT's unique brand, (at least from an aesthetic standpoint) something that Jones flat out doesn't appear interested in doing.

Dooley did more to damage the brand with the product on the field than Jones could do with a uniform if he made the players dress in floppy shoes and wear wigs like clowns.

This is probably true. However the one tiny shred of redeeming light during his tenure IMO was his commitment to upholding our longstanding look with regards to uniforms. Jones clearly doesn't share that same commitment, but as with most things, winning will make even the most abominable of uniforms more palatable.

I'm saying that UT has carved out its own unique look through the years, and at least Dooley was committed to continuing that look. Jones shows up and without having even won a single game takes it upon himself to completely blow up the away uniforms that aside from adding a black outline to the numbers, have been unchanged for 35-40 years. Can anybody find a reference of another team with script lettering on the front of their jerseys? I honestly can't even really visualize it because I literally can't think of another team that has script lettering.

The "Tennessee" on the chest is going to be very small, about the size of the team name word mark on many NFL jerseys, if not smaller. It will look fine.

The checkerboard pattern will be EXTREMELY subtle. You likely wouldn't know it was there if not for this thread.

is this speculation?
