Update on King

Memphis metro coaches will put the nail in Pastners coffin if CCM pulls a couple of kids out of Memphis. That would mean the levee is broken.

It almost sounds like a game, but this could be the year that UT breaks Memphis' recruiting fence. :p

The worst thing that could happen to Pastner is that King's Parents got a big dose of the Zo.

Possibly, but I doubt it......

People have to understand that the UT to Memphis pipeline has nothing to do with sports. Memphians have a negative perception of UT and its state influence, and everyone outside of Shelby County wishes Memphis was annexed to Miss or Arkansas. It's undeniable that Memphis will lose kids to other schools, and losing kids to schools like Duke and UNC is understandable but losing a kid to Knoxville is frowned upon and these kids receive no glory when they return home. Just like hatred is spewed about Memphis by other cities, it's also spewed about East Tennessee in order to deter recruits from attending UT.

From everything I have heard stokes has received no ill will in his returns to memphis, he's actually been very welcomed.

All it takes is a few to do it and others will follow suite, and the perception will change some. Stokes being here helps, add Nichols, Crawford and Jw3, and now all of a sudden there are 4 Memphis guys on a Tennessee roster. Having that many Memphis kids here will help change the perception. It won't ever be the cool thing to do(thatll always be stay home), but it can definitely become an accepted decision and one that is ok with the community.

CCM is trying to start at the bottom, the SHOT clinic in Memphis was a way to get in with coaches at a youth level, and all accounts so far was it went great. Coaches seem to really like him, and a lot of that could have to do with his background. Pearl wasn't exactly thought greatly of in memphis, he had that car salesman, sun tan Bruce, perception. CCM really gives off a different vibes and connects with these coaches, players and parents on an entirely different level than most coaches are capable of.

It won't be easy to get a consistent root in Memphis, but stokes helped, and pulling 2 or 3 Memphis kids in this class will only help even more.

It also really helps that Stokes is a total class act. His returns home have been doing things like visiting with Trey Erwin in the hospital. Do I think he and Zo did that to improve UT's community standing? No, I think they did it to brighten a lifelong UT fan's day. Do things like that help change a community perception? Absolutely.

I think Stokes is not only going to be a first round draft pick one day, but I think he will be an ambassador for the university that we can all be proud of.

Austin Price(VQ)

Just got off the phone with the talented Memphis forward. He had a good time on his visit this weekend and will return this fall for an official. He will make his decision sometime in early November. More to come in story form later.

I've suspected this for a while. I think this favors Memphis; doesn't leave UT a lot of time to make up ground.

My guess is he's waiting to see if Pastner lays another turd early in the season. I like Memphis and have cheered for them my entire life because I grew up there. I like Pastner, and want him to succeed but have seen very little to make me think he is a good coach. It's actually very similar to the Dooley situation here. Paz (or Dooley) finally has a talented veteran team after Cal (or Fulmer/Kiffin) left the cupboard bare. His success this year will be a fair indication of where that team is headed under him. If he doesn't do well with this team, I'd expect recruits to start leaving the city in record number.

I know personally several folks who are ultra successful living in Memphis that played at UT and are from Memphis...returning after their playing days....I have lived in Memphis 40 years plus and this attitude comes (trust me on this) from an incredibly small group...There is a HUGE following of UT Vols in Memphis...Yes,,,HUGE....I mean UT has a HUGE campus here for goodness sakes....so while some propagate this sentiment the reality of it...its not prevasive AT ALL....funny actually...If they hated it so bad why do so many spend so much time and money to escape Memphis for a few treasured days in East Tennessee???

How is he going to do that if he signs in November?

Memphis football recruits can leave for UT and they're not even thought of. But if a basketball recruit chooses UT over Memphis, he is considered a traitor. Some Memphians hold the belief that all basketball products from inside the 240 loop have a moral obligation to attend the University of Memphis. Like a poster above said, it's a relatively small group. But that group is very vocal.

Jarnell leaving probably opened it up a bit for UT.

And just my 2 cents but I believe King will be a Tiger.

The small group is led by African American basketball coaches in HS and AAU, some of whom would rather see someone never make it out of Memphis, rather than succeed on the Hill and be successful outside of the area.
For years, many of the coaches have held back young men that could be more than just a washed up HS star back in the neighborhood when college is over.

I started my short coaching career there at 25 in 1995. Nothing has changed. I can't even list the things I heard from coaches, families and players. Really amazing. I couldn't believe the things being said to these kids, and about had to fight my ass off when I'd tell a kid something different than he had been told by the supposed people that supported him.

I wish it would change, but it won't. That said, having a strong, well spoken, good ball coach that happens to be African American was never going to hurt our chances in Memphis, and I stated when CCM was hired that Memphis recruiting would finally get going. It's a shame that it's still like that in certain places, but it is what it is.

I've heard that for a long time.

The good news is that there is a lot of talent in Memphis and Memphis St can't take them all.

That's because you want it to favor the Mtown. It actually favors the Vols being that they came down on a one day unofficial visit with his family to have lunch with the head coach. Followed by the statement that he would come down for an official visit during the season. Take those glasses off dude.

Has King made any visits to Vandy or Texas the other two in his final 4?

Thats a very good point.

I'm pretty sure he hasn't visited whether. Vanderbilt is about 4 hours away from him, and on his way back from Knoxville. Yet he hasnt taken an unofficial there.

Texas is about 10 hours from menphis, but considering his family just drove 8 hours each way in one day, you'd think they'd be willin to go to Texas if nick wanted to.

Like I've been saying, if we were right down the road ok, but I strongly believe that this visit is evidence that King is seriously interested in UT. IMO UT is second right now, obviously to Memphis.

Maybe it's just me and I'm looking into it too much, but going from not being in his top 6 to being in his top 4 says a whole lot. Then making an a trip that to the best of my knowledge no one knew about is even bigger. Then to top it up he plans on going back for an official, which means he really liked his first trip and is seriously considering us. I have a feeling CCM knows a lot more than we do. I still see him at Memphis but have a really weird feeling CCM is going to get him. JMO so don't hate too much MC.

Any recruit would be stupid not to take an official visit during a big time college football game (whether it is in Gainesville, Tuscaloosa, Baton Rouge, Ann Arbor, Austin, etc.).

I think there's no question CCM has made up a lot of ground, and has us in as good of position as you could probably ask for with king. Still a lot of ground to make up at this point, but if there's one thing I've learned about CCM it's don't count him out.
