(Updated 8/2/23) 2023 MLB Draft and Roster Management Discussion Thread

it’s my guess that Galanie and Dickey were told by orgs to turn down money today in order to get more Tomorrow

I’m betting both get taken in the 11-12th rounds tomorrow and if those teams have $ to spend they will get it but it will take weeks to know
I think you’re right on Dickey. I don’t think he’s back. Less sure on Galanie. Ultimately could happen to him too

The early rounds (11-13) will be interesting indeed.

…funny money rounds…

I think what Galanie does in the cape the rest of July is huge. For the Vols sake I say bring him to campus and get to class and not play

Fringe draft picks aren’t getting anywhere near 150k in NIL, and the first 150k doesn’t count. Teams can still spend over that from their capital pool.

With the shrinking of minor league clubs and the living conditions, I would think staying in school with a training table, nice living quarters and no 8 hour bus rides would make it a tough out versus playing Rookie League and Short A ball. Gotta go to class of course.

I never really liked him but he and Kirby along with Skenes and Crews became friends at Hoover so I disliked him less. He actually told Kirby he made a great play in Omaha when they got Tre out at first. Makes me like him a little more.

Two guys who I cheered against as opponents, but really admired their games and appreciated as a baseball fan were Morgan and Enrique Bradfield. Especially the latter. I love watching a pure outfielder. EB isn’t just fast, he has great instincts and fundamentals. He makes everything look so easy.

Minor leagues got a pay raise in ‘23

Complex league: from $4,800 per year up to $19,800

Low-A: $11,000 to $26,200

High-A: $11,000 to $27,300

AA: $13,800 to $30,250

AAA: $17,500 to $35,800

Furnished Condos/Apartments with utilities are paid for by the team. However, 2-4 to an apt/condo and sharing a room with another is a reality. Player has to provide own food but teams (home & away) provide game meals. Some food provided at practices.

Conferences are so regionalized that 8 hour bus rides are a rarity IMO.

Both Ben McKee and Mike Wilson have tweeted the following about Dickey:

Based on their tweets, it seems likely that he's already struck a deal with a team. I've seen the Padres being floated around as the team. I guess we'll find out soon.

Sounds like the writers are surprised Dickey is still there, which is kind of a big “DUH”! Before the draft, he was going sooner than the 11th round, it was a given he was leaving, now it’s not. He’s gonna get drafted, it’s about the money.

That does make it a lot more palatable. I know guys 5-10 years ago that didn't make it to their 2nd summer after being drafted primarily because of the living conditions.
