Ok, I'm not being a smart ass, but why did you link a USA today piece and not the wall street journal piece? I may have just missed it in the piece you did link. I still say that he is in the top 3 coaches in the SEC and deserves to be paid accordingly.
I agree that this is a good day, but I must disagree with you when you compare it to Fulmer being canned. I was personally sad on that day. I am happy about this news. Please don't slander me and call me a Foolmer and Fulmerite and all of that stuff.
I think that there can be an argument made that would place Pearl below the top 3 coaches in the league, though. I am no expert in the true value of coaches, so I won't make the argument. But, others here might. I can say that Pearl doesn't strike me as a top 15 coach, though. I would think that in the SEC, Kennedy would give him a run for his money.
That may be the case, but the fact remains that he simply didn't deserve another raise.
I agree with the others that he was compensated for the current market value. I think the raise was more about what he has done here over the last 4 years not this year in particular, and imo, it would be completely ridiculous to allow Pearl to slip to 5th in the league in pay when he was won more SEC games than anyone over his tenure.
I understand that "the results that we just watched" were not really up to par, but the raise was the method to retain Pearl. I have to believe that the three out of four great seasons were the norm and the one bad season (keeping in mind that it wasn't terrible) out of four was the outlier. The raise was to ensure that we get the opportunity to reap the benefits of three out of four more seasons.
