UT Football. Is it plausible to believe we can win it all?

I said that you could argue that Florida is more worthy of the SEC game. I don't really care about that though. That's was an afterthought. For the 10,000th time the issue I have is with your idea that only conference champions deserve a shot at the title. In 2001, Florida deserved a shot more than LSU.
why argue when you have a scoreboard....especially when that scoreboard doesn't even have FL's name on it.

yeah, you could argue, but it still doesn't change the fact that FL finished 2nd in it's own division. it wasn't good enough to win the Eastern division of the SEC, but it's good enough to win the National Title?

Because I don't want to devalue the regular season, like you said earlier.
elaborate on this one please..........

Grasp this concept: NOBODY has EVER been invited to play in the National Championship Game with 8 Losses. Your scenario is pointless because it's totally delusional. Given this scenario the winner of another conference would play for the National Title. Get a clue!

In the scenario that jakez4ut is proposing a team with 8 wins might get invited to play for it all. Learn to read before you call me delusional.

If you want to determine who is better between LSU and UF in 2001, it isn't hard. One team had more wins and won the head-to-head matchup.
and one finished 2nd in it's divison, the other won the whole conf.

...and one team won the Conference Championship. Which one was worthy of playing in the National Championship Game? Neither. Which of them was worthy of playing in a BCS Bowl Game? Both of them.

see, that's where i get lost.

are we going to redefine wins now?

good win, bad win, fluke win?

then do math, and see who is better?

whatever happened to "you play to win the game"

this is the same mentality that has given us the scoreless, winless little league game. No one wants to lose, so the rule is, no losses, we simply wont' keep score.
This is why college basketball is a much better sport. There ain't no debate about the champs when it's over. Nobody debates HS state champs because there's a playoff. Ditto the NFL. Ditto baseball. Ditto everything else, because there's a playoff. You don't make the playoff - too bad, but at large selections allow room for a, albeit small, "beauty contest"

You play to win the TITLE and the one in CFB is lame at best.

1. it wasn't good enough to win the Eastern division of the SEC, but it's good enough to win the National Title?

2. elaborate on this one please..........

1. Florida wasn't good enough to beat Auburn this past year. How did that work out for them?

2. Texas had a better regular season than Pittsburgh. If you give Pitt a shot at the NC, what does that say about their respective seasons?

There is NO SCENARIO under which a team with 8 wins would play for the National Title.

And that's what happened. It worked out OK in my book.

i never mentioned a record. just a qualifier.

the reality is if TN or FL or whatever teams you want to use as examples were that good, then they should have won the games they were supposed to. If they don't, sorry. you had your chance. does it suck that had there been no SEC title game, TN would have played for a NT in 01? yeah, it does. but it still doesn't remove the fact that they, as well as FL, controlled their own destiny, and both of them screwed it up.

The regular season is a body of work, just because you have some big wins during the season, if you can't pull it all together to win your conference, then no way in hades should you get a shot at the NC. Yes LSU lost to FL but they went on to win thier conference championship and at that point they became more "deserving".

I'm glad you understand my point. I respectfully disagree with you, but you made your case well.

we don't want to devalue the games, yet we make all of those following a loss to the best division foe absolutely meaningless (in most years when they aren't going to lose 2 in conference)

I feel that LSU had control of their destiny, as well. They screwed it up against UT, UF, and Ole Miss.

thanks for answering my question. and FL won the conf. last year, despite losing to Auburn....what's your point???

and as for two? Pitt had a worse reg season because they won their conf?

c'mon, you can say it...you think TX should be in there because they are TX. Pitt is in the Big East. YOur opinion of TX is higher than all of the teams in the big east put together, the big east champ would do good to finish 3rd in the big 12...right?

I'm through arguing with you. You draw too many insane conclusions. It's like arguing with a drunk.

I've stated my case. Everyone here is free to agree or disagree.

There are worthy contenders other than conference champions.

I may have missed this point , but who in this example won their conference? Pitt only or both?...if both then you have a perfect situation for the playoff system. If Pitt only then sorry Texas , better luck next yr ...win your conference.:salute:

:banghead2: :banghead2: :banghead2: :banghead2: i hope we screw up our destiny enough to win the SEC this year.

I can see it now, if we win th eSEC this year, every fan base in the SEC should expect an apology from kptvol........"we're sorry, i know we didn't deserve to win, we weren't the best team"

TX lost out to OU, Pitt won the big east.
