Bruin, UTM hired Ray Mears as their AD so there is a precedence for something like that. However, I'm not sure they would pay enough money to get Rod there nor do I think his act would play very well in rural West Tennessee.
Oh, and just so you know, Martin has a super Wal Mart, too!
Several names to look for here include:
--Brian Hetland, long time APSU asst and current coach at Clarksville High
--George Sykes, former player and current coach at Southwest CC in Memphis
--Robert White, Dyersburg State CC head coach.
Rod Delmonico would be an interesting choice but I don't see that happening. UTM needs to find a young, energetic asst coach from a successful program and let him build up the program and use this as a stepping stone. However, the timing of this makes that an unlikely scenario.
Bruin, apparently you and I (and PrattVol) are the only ones who care about this particular subject. But, here is some info I have found:
--Chancellor Rakes is the one who fired Cates.
--AD in a press release said, "some people win games and some people are winners, and Bubba Cates is a winner." Went on to say how Cates deserved more chances than others for being such a good guy. This gives a lot of credence to what Preds was saying earlier in the thread.
--Interestingly enough, the AD is a native of Martin and played baseball at Tenn Tech. I guess his judgement was clouded by his friendship with Cates.
--Cates is a good guy and well liked by everyone. I guess Leo Durocher was right.
Bruin, the search committee should be finalized this week. Even with this late start, they still hope to have a new coach in place by the end of the month. The job will pay around $70K annually. They have received a lot of interest from coaches, former coaches, scouts, etc.
Another candidate to watch for is Preston Ozment. He is a former player at UTM, former coach at Dyer County and is currently a scout with the Rockies and the coach for the Tennessee team in the Sunbelt Tournament each summer. I did hear a couple of other names to go along with the prior ones mentioned but they really don't have any connection or credentials to be considered top candidates. Some are saying there is a big name candidate but I have not been able to confirm this to the point where I would throw that name out.
A point to consider for Cates' defense. I heard UTM only had 7 or 8 scholarships to offer . Also, UTM apparently does not waive out of state tuition for athletes from surrounding states as several other OVC schools do (including Murray State). Some of this will have to be changed for UTM to be able to compete on equal footing with their conference rivals.
They do waive out of state tuition for athletes who achieve a 25 or more on their ACT. Also I don't believe they only have 7-8 scholarships because their softball program has the full amount. Title IX would not allow that discrepancy. Do they limit out of state tuition money available? Maybe. But there's where you have to be smart in recruiting. The other sports seem to manage so baseball could too.Bruin, the search committee should be finalized this week. I certainly hope the current UTM baseball players get a good coach for that program. Hanging around after everything that's happened the past couple years has been tough and there are some good kids on that squad that deserve better.
