UT Martin Baseball ?

Bruin, UTM hired Ray Mears as their AD so there is a precedence for something like that. However, I'm not sure they would pay enough money to get Rod there nor do I think his act would play very well in rural West Tennessee.

Oh, and just so you know, Martin has a super Wal Mart, too!

Several names to look for here include:
--Brian Hetland, long time APSU asst and current coach at Clarksville High
--George Sykes, former player and current coach at Southwest CC in Memphis
--Robert White, Dyersburg State CC head coach.

Rod Delmonico would be an interesting choice but I don't see that happening. UTM needs to find a young, energetic asst coach from a successful program and let him build up the program and use this as a stepping stone. However, the timing of this makes that an unlikely scenario.

Interested to hear more names. Keep us updated

Bruin, apparently you and I (and PrattVol) are the only ones who care about this particular subject. But, here is some info I have found:

--Chancellor Rakes is the one who fired Cates.
--AD in a press release said, "some people win games and some people are winners, and Bubba Cates is a winner." Went on to say how Cates deserved more chances than others for being such a good guy. This gives a lot of credence to what Preds was saying earlier in the thread.
--Interestingly enough, the AD is a native of Martin and played baseball at Tenn Tech. I guess his judgement was clouded by his friendship with Cates.
--Cates is a good guy and well liked by everyone. I guess Leo Durocher was right.

Interesting.

Keep the info coming. I am interested and certainly have no idea where to get any updates except from you!

Apparently, UTM did not have a plan. They are accepting any and all applicants. They hope to have a coach in place by the end of August.

Smh. That's what happens when presidents get involved where they shouldn't. ADs are paid to do a job and should get to do so

Bruin, the search committee should be finalized this week. Even with this late start, they still hope to have a new coach in place by the end of the month. The job will pay around $70K annually. They have received a lot of interest from coaches, former coaches, scouts, etc.

Another candidate to watch for is Preston Ozment. He is a former player at UTM, former coach at Dyer County and is currently a scout with the Rockies and the coach for the Tennessee team in the Sunbelt Tournament each summer. I did hear a couple of other names to go along with the prior ones mentioned but they really don't have any connection or credentials to be considered top candidates. Some are saying there is a big name candidate but I have not been able to confirm this to the point where I would throw that name out.

A point to consider for Cates' defense. I heard UTM only had 7 or 8 scholarships to offer . Also, UTM apparently does not waive out of state tuition for athletes from surrounding states as several other OVC schools do (including Murray State). Some of this will have to be changed for UTM to be able to compete on equal footing with their conference rivals.

Great stuff thanks.

The scholarship underfunding was my point early in this thread.

Another candidate to be considered is Joe Lincoln. He played in the Dodger organization and is currently on the staff at SIU. Spent a few years on the staff at Austin Peay. A little young and no HC experience but, you never know.

I posted this as soon as the news hit but I heard today that rod D is really interested. I assumed he would be due to his interest in all jobs. Backwards K do you think that would be a good hire?

Bruin, I have heard the same thing but I haven't been able to confirm that. What do you think about Rod at UT-Martin?

They do waive out of state tuition for athletes who achieve a 25 or more on their ACT. Also I don't believe they only have 7-8 scholarships because their softball program has the full amount. Title IX would not allow that discrepancy. Do they limit out of state tuition money available? Maybe. But there's where you have to be smart in recruiting. The other sports seem to manage so baseball could too.

I certainly hope the current UTM baseball players get a good coach for that program. Hanging around after everything that's happened the past couple years has been tough and there are some good kids on that squad that deserve better.

Preds, thanks for mentioning the ACT score waiver. The # of scholarships is what I heard but you may be right. Not sure of the Title IX reference since the women's sports are playing catch up on the # of scholarships that go to football.

I have heard that there is some talent in the program with more on the way in this signing class. The right coach could recruit to Martin and make the program competitive quickly.

You clearly don't understand how title ix works. Title XI would be the exact reason for the scholarships to be limited in baseball and fully funded in softball. Title XI says equal dollars must be spent on both men's and women's scholarships. With football being a sport at Utm then nearly every other sport will show a higher scholarship total in women's than men's sports.

The ncaa allows Women's hoops more than men's at all schools for this reason.

I could be wrong, but am 90% sure that title XI does not care about each individual sport. Rather just that the total amount of scholarships between men and women are equal which puts men's sports at a disadvantage because of the number football takes up.

Of course this is about UTM but the OVC in baseball is a competitive league. Especially Austin Peay the last few years. They have been the NCAA Regional three years in a row. Last two years they have made it to the final game of the regional before losing. Tech and Belmont have competitive teams as well. Dont discredit some OVC baseball, those boys can play.

Bruin, I heard that an asst coach from a JUCO in Missouri has also applied for the job. Apparently, this guy is a one time asst at UTM.

The job was posted on August 5th. It is my understanding that the job has to be posted for two weeks before you can close it down and make a decision. They still hope to have the position filled by the end of the month. Not sure if that means they already knew who they wanted or not?
