UT Martin Baseball ?

NHC, several folks in West Tennessee like Ozment. With him being an alum of the UTM baseball program, I would think he would get consideration. He has been very successful at Dyer Co and in coaching the Tennessee Sunbelt team, he should have plenty of contacts with HS coaches throughout the state.

The open forum with the candidates does not seem like a good idea. If there is a committee, they should do their homework and make a decision.

I hope this is not the only candidate they bring in. Honestly this seems very similar to the history Cates had. Successful JC coach with no D1 experience. D1 experience does not appear to be a requirement at all though.

No idea on the interest from these two guys- but they seem to me like they would be a good fit.

Mike Federico- Univ. of Southern Miss pitching coach. Played at USM. Coached at Meridian CC and Univ of Memphis prior to USM. Very successful track record.

Marc MacMillan- Univ of Ark Pine Bluff pitching coach and recruiting co-ordinator. Played at Ole Miss. Coached HS, NAIA and D2 before UAPB. Also was Head Coach for TBCA Team Tennessee for 2 years.

Both of these guys have D1 recruiting experience as well as HC and Pitching coach credentials and are very familiar with baseball in the region.

I am sure there were no shortage of applicants- this is the last D1 HC job open.....

My guess is that they had 30-40 applicants for the job. Lots of turnover this year in D1 and JC coaches will almost always apply for jobs in their region. This job looks to have also attracted a lot of HS coaching candidates. Maybe someone will ask in the forum?

If UTM is only considering folks who "applied" for the job, then they should just drop baseball. Hopefully, they acted like a real D1 school and identified good candidates and then reached out to them.

Applications are normally submitted by folks who are not happy where they are, not wanted where they are, etc.

Hopefully, they go after a good coach and try to build a program.

I did hear a little more about the search. I heard Delmonico was scheduled for an interview and then backed out. Also heard that another interview was offered and the candidate declined.

Appears to be that Corn is the only candidate that has actually interviewed for the job..........a little disappointing. Looks like Corn will be the HC. Heard he is a good guy and a hard worker for sure- but will definitely have to prove himself as a recruiter very quickly or this will just be more of the same for UTM baseball. He will have good pipelines into JC's which should help him out.

I'm left with the impression that they really aren't looking to make the investment in baseball to drive a winning program. If Corn works out, great- they got a good one. If he doesn't, not a big deal- they haven't had a winning record since 1992. Basically just change for the sake of change.

People have previously stated that UTM wants to focus on Tenn players. With 10 D1 teams in state and the SEC raiding top talent- do you think this a good plan?

Ready for footbal now!!

I heard a guy named Shrout was the other candidate with an offer to interview for the job. He was at Lipscomb and is apparently working with the program at Samford now. The same person that told me this also said, Shrout declined the offer.

I also heard UTM is going to increase the number of baseball scholarships to the maximum number of 11.7. Apparently, UTM has some good pitching talent in the program and there is a chance for immediate success (of course winning 15 games would be a big improvement for this program).

In asking folks who would know, you will get a mixed bag on Corn. He is apparently a good baseball man but is a little off the wall with some of his actions. Some really like him, some not so much. I would be interesting to hear what some of you have heard about him.

All of y'all that talked bad about UTM and Martin can kiss my @ss. Martin's a nice place to live and UTM is a great place to go to school. Town is loaded with Vol fans as well. Some of you poking fun probably haven't even been there. In anticipation of a "he mad" gif or pic, you're d@mn right I am. Born and raised and a proud alum.

Just heard that Delmonico is interviewing for the job tomorrow. I haven't been able to confirm this but the source has been accurate in other info.

Would be a good hire IMO. I don't know how it will work out in terms of W/L record, but coming from a major SEC program he will expect certain things from the administration that have not been by others and create a culture change that will be helpful for future coaches

Would definitely bring name recognition which would boost recruiting and fund raising. Also, he would be able to demand more from the Administration for the baseball program which would be a plus.

Still not sure how his personality would play in Martin, tho.

Agreed, that is why I am not sure if he himself will succeed. But I am confident that he would create changes that would help future coaches succeed

Third candidate is from Samford but is not Shrout. Tony David is a long time asst at Samford and also worked at South Alabama. Committee was high on him but he originally declined. However, now he has apparently agreed to interview.

One additional thought on Delmonico. For him to agree to interview for this job, I wonder what kind of promises had to be made for him to interview for this job?

Bruin, you are exactly right. What kind of coaching search would open the candidates up to the open public? I wonder if they are going to have a vote of the general public to see who should get the job?

Unbelievable.

Ha...I was simply wanting to convey that it happens much more than I ever thought. Probably for smaller, community focused institutions. I thought it was off the wall at first too...

Yea I have seen it done with a few smaller schools but never heard of it with a D1 school. It certainly would make a few candidates skeptical to apply since the entire process is public.

Coach Corn has my vote,He is a great HC for UTM he is hungry. I do not think Coach Delmonico will be a good fit for UTM ,I have spoke to many Ex baseball players from UT and they all in agreement that he will not be a good coach for a small D1 program he has a huge ego and money drives him. He will not work with the present players he will get new players and will start bringing Juco players next year guarantee you.
