UT vs. KU

I've enjoyed your comments on your team. It appears as though most of our fan bases don't quite know what to expect. I guess having no experience with each other, that is understandable.

I had a few random thoughts. I, too, don't think you will be intimidated at Allen Field house. Your program has enough experience to use the noise to their advantage, assuming the crowd is what we expect for students out of classes. If you struggle it will probably be less the noise (which many announcers chalk it up to) and probably more to the defense. Since Self has been in Lawrence his defense has rattled teams and it surprizes me how much is attributed to the atmosphere. Now, that is IF OUR YOUNG PLAYERS PERFORM! It is hard to predict so we may miss assignments all over the place.

I didn't mention the Morris twins in my previous post. Both are way less aggressive than KU fans want. They just recently started dunking rather than laying up shots even though they are 6'8" and 6'9" respectively. During this Christmas break they may be showing signs of faster progress. They have some real skills but we see that proverbial high school to college lag and they are just realizing how much more effort they have to put in to be good. Both twins were proned to fouls early on but that has improved lately. Markieff likely will start along with Morningstar, Taylor, Aldrich and Collins. We have far more bench guards we can depend on (even though they aren't all elite/experienced) than we do front court help. I sure hope the refs don't ugly up the game by calling every foul known to man!

We sometimes have trouble getting the ball to Aldrich but when we do, we are very successful. Our best three point shooters are Tyrell Reed (36%) Sherron Collins (37%) and Brady Morningstar (46%). Brady and Sherron have pretty decent defensive skills. Cole is a prolific blocker.

Last note: Did you know that our 2010 recruit Royce Woolrigde is Renaoldo's brother?

It looks like we are in for a roller coaster ride of a game. Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

justlikebball pretty much hits on most points concerning KU.

In a previous post someone said something tot he point that if you don't hit your 3's it will be a long day. The most frustrating thing for me this year has been our inability to consistently block out and get defensive boards. We are giving up WAY too many offensive rebounds which lead to 2nd chance points. That is what did us in at Arizona.

The other negative has been the killer instinct or lack of. Against Syracuse we were up 13 points with 10 minutes in the game and basically went on cruise control as we did at Arizona when we controlled the game for the first 22 minutes leading by 9 and then getting outscored in the 2nd half like 47 to 26 or something like that.

These teams have a lot of similarities - athleticism being one of them. Our bench is OK, not great. It;s taking our freshman a little longer to get things going (twins and Relaford).

The weakest spot on our team is the #3 spot that Rush controlled the last 3 years. We had a Juco All American set to take that spot but he has been injured all year. There is thoughts he may actually play tomorrow. Not sure though - His name is Mario Little.

I'll be at the game and am looking forward to it. If we can hit 3's ( Brady, Tyrel and Sherron) and if we can do a better job blocking out I like our chances. We don't do that I don't like our chances.

Good Luck

Thanks, Ramblin.' Looks like Aldrich comes down with his share of rebounds each game. We have 3 that are pretty good at crashing the boards in Smith, Chism and Williams. If your outside game is on we may find ourselves in trouble early. Our perimeter D has been sorely lacking this year. Our outside shooting has been streaky, at best.

As for finding a better forum, you probably won't get many takers. This one is excellent. As a forum admin myself, I know message boards and haven't found a better one than this, including my own (which is a pretty good one). :)

For forums I was just suggesting the good KU board if anyone wanted to go over there and chat.

Morningstar and Reed have been shooting real well as of late (Especially at home). Aldrich is a beast but didn't fare too well when there was a dominant big man in the middle (See Arizona and Hill). He just can't get into early foul trouble which plagues him. He always picks up a couple of cheapies (wedges..).

I'm really looking forward to being in Allen Fieldhouse. This is the biggest non con game I've seen there since Michigan State came in ranked in the top 10 a couple years ago.

I'll take Kansas because they're at home, but really, they have defeated no one of significance. Their highest win I think was against Temple.

All true, unfortunately. KU is very young, inconsistent, inexperienced, and rebounds poorly on the offensive glass. This is not a recipe for success against a ranked team like the Vols.

Collins and Aldrich are capable of carrying this team to a win all by itself.

What it boils down to is people stepping up. Can the Morris twins, Taylor, and Morningstar give good minutes. If so, then you win, if not, Tennessee may pull off the victory. I watched the game against Arizona and you guys definitely have some growing pains, but there's no doubt that Self will have these guys playing as a team no one wants to play by the time the tournament gets here.

I think this game can very easily go either way. I guess thats the case for a lot of games. Just depends on what Kansas team and what Tennessee team shows up. Hopefully both teams will bring their A games and put on a show for the fans.

I did notice that Chism, Smith, Tabb and Maze are all Juniors. You can't beat experience so that has me worried some. Our really only experienced player is Sherron (jr) and the only one who has played any significant minutes before. Cole's game has changed now that he doesn't have Jackson and Arthur to play with. I guess that is true of any team that lost as much as we did. We just don't have much experience closing out the game. Overall, I still enjoy our young team and try to concentrate on watching them grow rather than aiming for the final four.

OK. Self likes the talent on this team. He likes it a lot. But they're just so far away from performing at a a high level on a consistent basis that I think the Vols should be a 5 pt favorite.

But Vegas says Kansas should win by 2-3 points. I say BS.

Tennessee has went on to neutral sites for wins against Georgetown and Marquette. Our other road games featured a close win against MTSU and a blowout loss to Temple. Our defense and shot selection needs to improve. I'll take you guys in a tight, tight game.

Do you know how nice it would be for Tennessee to already have a final four under our belt and aim for it again? It's like walking on the moon for us. We haven't been past the sweet 16 yet but have gotten there the last two years. I think we may actually see a final 4 in Bruce's tenure, but for now, we are still being fitted for our space suits. :birgits_giggle:

I just saw where you guys are something like 204-17 in the last 15 years in AFH. I can see where they might add points there... wow.

You certainly put that in to perspective! KU fans are so myopic that we don't look around us often. When we do, it is to spar with the likes of UNC, UCLA and Memphis...............speakiing of which, my interactions with Vol fans and Memphis fans are dramatically different. At least we can have a conversation with you guys rather than a p*ssing contest. It always pays off to have respect and civility toward your opponent. This is good for the college game- only brag with restraint.

Here's to a good game!

I think this falls under the category of judging all by the actions of a few . See the ku racist thread. Which by the way was one guy judging all of you by something he didn't have a clue about . Thanks for your opinion.

Well, to be honest, it was not ONE fan. It was MANY fans on both boards and it was over the course of the last year. I am not saying there are NO civil Memphis fans but most continue to insist in an aggressive manner they really outplayed us and should have won. Most wanted to continue that argument when I would have expected a "good game. You won fair and square" comment. We have a few good Memphis posters. What can I say? Rivalries are a b*tch and sometimes go over board.... and that is my opinion.

He's right - most... well a large portion of Memphis fans are morons looking to start crap because they feel under appreciated - atleast when the subject of the Vols comes up.

And Tennesseefan - you're giving Kansas too much credit. Collins and Aldrich cannot win this game on their own. Maybe if Tennessee plays their worst game of the year (other than Temple). Of course Morningstar and the twins will have to give them good minutes - they're big parts of the team... just like Hopson/Tatum/Williams/Tabb/etc are big parts of our team... and Tyler Smith leads the way like Collins does for the Jayhawks.

We will have a big size advantage and this is our game to lose - specifically at the guard and forward spots. Our guys go 6'3, 6'4, 6'6, 6'7... while all their are from 5'11-6'3. They have talent - but it's a way different type of team. As long as we shoot over 40% from the field (30%+ from 3) we win this game unless they go on a tear and shoot in the high 50%s.

I never have said anywhere that we should have won , just the opposite . We lost because we couldn't hit free throws and we choked . As far as the opinion , everyone has one .

And Kansas outplayed us at the end of the game.
